Anybody been to Varna?

Like the idea of Bulgaria, cheap beers (before the € completely obliterates it), sunshine and something different to a Mediterranean summer holiday.

Lots of good advice already here. I would offer that the Statue of Liberty experience has lessened over time, but Ellis Island and the Intrepid are both good. If you want to see a theater show, check out the TKTS booth in Times Square for discounted, day-of tickets. Definitely temper your expectations for mass transit...the Tube is head and shoulders above NYC mass transit.

Appreciate the advice! good to know.

Pretty meh city, neither amazing nor terrible. There are some nice parts of the coast nearby in Kaliakra, Balchik and Krapets. I don't really know that part well but people say some parts of the northern coast are great and still quite unspoilt. I know the south better especially Sinemorets which when I went still had some very beautiful and pretty empty beaches but it's probably been overdeveloped by now. Sozopol is a town with a very nice historic centre, a lively modern town and some good beaches nearby but it gets very busy.

Should have asked you directly, didn’t even cross my mind. I’ll look into Sozopol, thanks

Just got back from Italy and spent a night in Naples. Had heard very mixed review but i really liked it. The coastal setting is amazing with Mount Vesuvius in the background and there's some really nice architecture too. I've done a lot of Italian cities and it feels distinctly different from the rest. There's obviously some ropey areas but I didn't really see any of these. The best thing about it is that it feels like a chaotic Italian city where the centre is actually lived in, rather than a theme park for tourists.

I loved Naples, will definitely return.

It's unlike most Italian cities l suppose.

It is just mad, chaotic & slaps you around the face (in a nice way!)

It's just great to wonder about the narrow pathways, see the football memorabilia & take it all in.

Booked a flight into Tirana in June, and a flight out of corfu 10 days later. Not much planned in between yet but cannot wait.

Booked Seville for next week, any recommendations for food? Must see/do things?

I went back last year (only other time was for our QF with Sevila) and had a very different trip. Incredible City, now in my top 5. Absolutely beautiful, amazing architecture, full of history but rammed full of great bars and restaurants.

They are the main tourist attractions but definitely well worth seeing Plaza de Espana, the Alcazar and the catherdral. If I remember right we got joint tickets for the latter two.

Setas de Sevilla is the big wooden structure which you can go up and walk around. Personally I think it's quite a cool addition to the skyline but unless you're looking to fill your time, not really worth the money and time to go up. You can get better/similar views elsewhere. It's obviously popular for a reason though so have a look.

A bit basic, but we really enjoyed the walking tour we took on the first day. Got to learn a fair bit about the history of the place and also got the geography of it sorted pretty quickly and knew which areas we wanted to go back to. There's loads, just google them. If you didn't get to the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán Stadium when we were there, get there for a game if it lands well.

Right then, food and booze. These are pretty traditional spanish tapas bars; noisy, hot, absolutely packed at lunch and dinner, rude staff but absolutely superb tapas and dirt cheap beer and wine. I absolutely love them.

Bar Alfalfa - Particularly good tapas, find a tiny bit of space and start ordering.

Casa Morales - Our favourite bar, we went about 4 times. Lunchtime is best in the backroom, the menu is written on these huge wine barrels. Again just find some space and start ordering. If you're not fussy then just ask them to bring you some of what they reccomend. Everything we had was excellent. Also get yourself a Tinto de verano (like a red wine soda drink) and a few glasses of vermouth

Dos de Mayo - More of a pub sort of vibe.

Then if you want a bit more of an upmarket meal out, we enjoyed Petite Comite.

DM me if you want a list of about 20 bars haha, but I won't type them all out here.

Have a great time!

Decided to do a bit of a random trip in a couple of weeks. Flying to Paris and staying the night. Next day we get the train to Zurich for one night. Day after that we get the train to Lake Como for 3 nights then train to Verona for 2 nights.

Not too bothered about Paris even though I've never been but the wife wanted to go and realise its probably too short a trip to see much in Switzerland but it'll be an adventure!

What a journey this was. Paris was a bit chaotic as expected (not a huge fan)

The train from Paris to Zurich was great, most comfortable mode of transport I've been on.

Zurich surprised me, great little city with everything easy to reach albeit pricey.

The train from Zurich to Como wasnt as luxurious but the scenery was stunning! 3 hours flew by!

Lake como was lovely and relaxing after a hectic couple of days prior, went on a boat trip to Bellagio which was also lovely.

Then the train to Milan and then to Verona. Verona is a wonderful place, like a smaller and more accessible version of Rome. I can see why a few people on here have said how great it is. Brilliant bars here too.

I was expecting quite a few hiccups along the way regarding travel etc but it was seamless, so easy!

Thinking of getting a Monzo or Revolut card for mainly European travel spending.
I don't really want to pay a monthly fee & can't be bothered to transfer all my wages & bills to the account either.

Revolut looks the better of the two but any experiences people want to share on either card ?

Great feedback,  I'm looking at something similar in Sept but starting at Verona and ending up in Slovenia for the Scotland game.

We use Wise and always get good exchange rates, never had any problems with it and we've used it all over. They do charge a one off fee for the card, but if you use my referral link you'd get it free, if you decide to go with Wise https://wise.com/invite/dic/debral113

Can't help with Monzo or Revolut but I think they are more like a normal bank, whereas Wise is more for currency exchange and spending abroad

Revolut is the best only if you use my referral. I use barclaycard for all overseas spending, find it much better than the fintechs

I got a chase account for this, free overseas spending at whatever the Mastercard rate is. I just leave it empty and put my spending money in it when I travel.

I use currensea.

Takes money out of your linked  bank account and no fees.

Excellent

Excellent

I also came here to recommend Currensea, no loading, no choosing currency, decent rates.

I've had a Starling account for a while and it's pretty good imo, you can use that abroad no bother too.

I asked that question two weeks or so ago.   Have a look few pages back.   Ended up not going but got some good tips.
