Wes Morgan - Unsung Hero?

Recommended Posts

Hello all.

I don't often post on here so don't shoot me down (straight away anyway) and apologies if this has been posted elsewhere before. There's a good article on Sky Sports about the rise of Wes Morgan this season from a former team-mate at Forest that I thought might be of interest - http://www.skysports.com/football/news/30385/10107609/leicester-city-captain-wes-morgans-fairytale-rise

While the headlines have been about Mahrez, Vardy and Kante this season it's a nice angle and haven't seen many other media outlets pick up on it. After switching to 3-5-2 last season to accommodate him, he's been an absolute rock alongside Huth/Wasyl this season.

He's been fantastic this season. Absolute credit to him, in my eyes he looks like an accomplished Premier League defender. To be honest a season experience in the BPL has probably helped all our players to develop. So pleased for Wes on how well he is doing.

We don't keep alot of clean sheets but we still have a good defence that gets us results. I like to think that Vahdez are like bank robbers and Wes, Huth and Kasper are the get-away drivers who assure we go home with 3 points

I think because of us conceding quite often, especially earlier on, it was difficult for pundits to pick him out as one of our star performers, but he undoubtly has been and he is beginning to get the recognition now for it. He has been an absolute beast, dominant in the air but also quicker than many think, and he has always been great at blocking shots, throwing his body in the way. He is up there with the best CB's in the league at the moment, and if he was playing for a big 4 team, pundits would be swooning over him no doubt.

He has significantly improved this season. Looks faster, stronger and seems more comfortable with the ball at his feet.

He looks like a man who have defensive cover and isn't being asked to do everything on his own.

The fact he has Fuchs, Huth and Simpson next to him, instead of Konchesky/Schlupp, Moore and De Laet can't be underplayed.

According to the Mercury he's not been booked for 29 matches and has committed only 6 fouls all season.

Not fact checked that yet but if true that's mightily impressive, especially considering his iffy form for much of last season.

He is in his arse a lot less this season which means he must be reading the game better. I always felt he had a mistake a game in him that would lead to a goal but he has cut a lot of those out this season. Still think he's had a few moments though

Totally agree. I said in another thread a couple of weeks ago that having Huth (and all his experience) at the side of him has no doubt improved Morgan.

The best thing for us and Morgan, was him attending two major tournaments with Jamaica in the summer. It would of been his biggest international challenge as a player and i genuinely feel, it made him the player he is this season. Defending against some of the best players in the world at Copa America and conceding very few goals, is definitely saying something. He's been an absolute beast this season for us!

He seems to be a bright guy, and I think he's just learned from players with more experience than he has, like Huth, Cambiasso and - this season - Fuchs. I really admire what he has achieved, and he has been a massive presence for us all season. Top man.

He defends really intelligently now. Doesn't lunge in, stays close to the striker and physically gets to the ball first or shows him away from goal. Also defends in front of goal well, gets some potentially dangerous situations in the six yard area cleared away early.

He's loving it too. Looks well happy whenever he's being interviewed. Much like Drinkwater he's playing as well now as he was during the promotion season. Given the huge quality gulf between the two divisions that's mighty impressive.

I'm not sure I've ever seen such a vast improvement in a player over a 12 month period. I freely admit I slated Wes at the beginning of last season and didn't think he was up to the job. I'm so pleased he's proved me wrong and he's looking more and more acomplished every week. I'd love to know what's made the difference. He's like a completely different player now.

Wes has been the biggest transformation I've seen I think. In fact, It's really hard to find any weakness any where at the moment. If anybody had told me 6 months ago that Danny Simpson would be anywhere near the team I'd have laughed. He's now becoming cemented in the back 4.

Ranieri has worked wonders. When the press say "Ranieri has just carried on where Pearson left us" is almost becoming comical in the Leicester circle. We all just politely smile and think "It would take too long to re-educate you" but in no way dissing Pearson in the process.

I think a truly world class manager like Claudio can micro manage and give that bit extra that is beyond someone like Pearson (no disrespect) When Claudio first came in I felt, naturally,  he didn't know our group at all. I almost wished Nigel could have been kept on in a transitional advisory role (in a perfect world) Really we needed Claudio for an advisory role for Pearson! (again no disrespect to NP, I love him and he lay all of the foundations)

Less than 6 months on, LESS THAN 6 MONTHS ****ING ON I feel that Claudio has not only found out everything there is to know, but also re-educated all of us (the fans) and the entire club on who Leicester City truly are. Claudio's going to have a statue, mark my words.

Whats to be remembered, he had no real summer break, now going through this 1st half of the season,

producing I believe the best form of his career.

Febuary last season I was doubting him, and how long he would hold his place.By god I reckon

hes proved us all wrong, in one way or another.

We are giving away too many goals, in comparison to our top 6 opponents, but somehow, unlike

last season, we havent really given away silly goal.

Though our 2 CBs must take responsibilty on conceded set piece goals, but last few games we are

improving, proving the defence are slowly learning.Maybe its me but I would like both Wes and

Huth be more vocal and show more defensive leadership, it could be I dont see it because now,

I watch the games on TV.

Hes earnt this season and hes now proven to the doubters he is a top and steady PL player.

Claudio has defintely sorted out our defensive set up, and the individuals.
