Mendy

How can we reasonably judge Mendy when he has not had a run of games to show what he is capable of or how he will fit with the way we play ?

Do we "get rid" because he is perceived to be a"sick note"?

Fuchs always looked solid and the comparisons to Vardy are stupid... he came from non League, he didn't have CL experience like Musa who we paid nearly £20mill for. Musa' first touch is appauling.

I'm talking about last season, all of those players looked rubbish. The team looked rubbish from day one, it's quite feasible the other players were dragged down in performance due to the issues we had at the club.

His first touch is nothing of the sort, yes sometimes it can be truly terrible there is no hiding from that. But people just totally ignore everything that went before it, where his touch was just fine for long spells and focus on the one terrible thing. It's exactly the same as the Mendy / Millwall example.

"He kept giving it away" was repeated to death, when he just didn't. It was two terrible passes and the rest was absolutely fine. In fact he had the second best pass success rate on the whole pitch and the second most tackles made in our team. Yet he got absolutely slated, he wasn't brilliant, nobody was. But he didn't deserve the singling out that he got.

Scapegoating at its finest. When the shit hits the fan somebody always gets singled out. Happens all the time.

No point in selling, won't get much for him right now. Would be best to wait and see how he'd do in a fully fit season. Plus if DD leaves, we will need all the bodies in the midfield we can get

Last season. Kasper was our most consistent player. Drinkwater looked good up untill approx November time. Other than that, I agree they were all poor.

Musa's touch is poor though, I don't know how you can defend it. He can control it further than he can kick it.

Mendy probably did have the second best success rate. I expect a holding midfielder to do that. All they do/supposed to do is win the ball back and give it to a more creative player, who, will have a worse pass success rate because with creativity comes losing the ball a lot.

I've seen him control it just fine more times than I have seen him take a poor touch. He's never going to be Mahrez, the point is the issues are vastly exaggerated, we're all guilty of it now and again. But I just think it's unfair when certain players get ripped to shreds.

I'm aware that there are caveats to the stats. But when people are saying he couldn't pass the ball and kept giving it away, it frankly just wasn't true. It just highlights my point of people exaggerating.

Everyone's right in saying there's so little to judge Mendy on but a) There's no signs of him being fully fit by the sound of our press conferences b) no signs that his heart is in remaining here and c) no evidence that he'll be a marked success as the jobsworth midfielder he's appeared to be so far.

My criticism is not of a man who can't pass the ball or work diligently enough. He can and does. I just haven't seen the slightest indication that he's anything special or has anything likely to improve our continuing problem of creating chances and even scoring a few from central midfield.

There must be hundreds of players who can do what he does - competing honestly enough and moving the ball and the responsibility onto the next man. I honestly wouldn't have preferred him to the hod carrier who ran my non-league midfield back in the 70s...a bloke who tackled with the metaphorical force of a tank and could whack a pass 40 yards in any direction if he had to and with no apparent fear of ever getting injured.

We're supposedly aiming for Europe which means we need a bit extra for our outlay in every position - and a softened up, still vulnerable Mr Predictable is not the answer when we've already got a fit and experienced clone in Andy King, waiting full time on the bench for such occasions as he's needed to sew a game up or plug a temporary leak.

What we need is someone with the energy, skills and inventiveness to mix the cocktails of an exciting new adventure - someone to lift and renew the spirits of everyone involved at the club, someone who'll have a worthwhile pop at goal and mix a little magic with his free-kicks. .

Lawrence appeared to have some of that special sparkle but if you and others think he's not good enough - and I'll concede the point to those who've seen more of the lad - I don't know what the hell anyone's doing talking about medic-room Mendy.

I was brought up on the likes of Davie Gibson, Graham Cross and Frank McLintock. The last two had slide tackles that lasted longer than Mendy's time on the pitch and in musical terms Mendy was like a tin-whistle to a grand piano compared to Gibbo conducting the orchestra of our attack.

That standard was set over 50 years ago and I'm still waiting for an improvement not a succession of pale, injury-plagued pretenders.

In those days we didn't look much further than Scotland for our signings but now we search most every corner of the world yet still don't seem to know what we're looking for half the time.

The  players who steered us to the Premiership title deserve better than to be going into the new season with three important first teamers missing and a few others not wanting to be here in any case.

Where's the incentive in that when there should be at least two first rate players eager to seize the sleeves of every shirt?

The season's already started but we still seem to be on holiday in Hong Kong when it comes to the team strengthening we all know to be needed.

It's not an exaggeration to say Musa looks like he's never seen a football before most times he plays, that's just how it looks.

He's a truly shocking footballer.

Mendy's future here is linked to drinkys

i find it interesting that all talk of papy leaving has disappeared whilst the  drinky rumours have got going

It's one of the reasons I'd sell Drinky at the prices mentioned.

£30m-£40m in the bank and a chance for James, Mendy or Iborra to fill his shoes. We should be able to fill his position in house.

Some comments about Drinkwater lately have been laughable.

Imagine thinking Mendy can fill his shoes lol

Honestly, get in the real world.

I rate Drinkwater but if I was to build a case against him I'd say he's only ever performed to a really high standard when partnered with Kante and for a few months after it. He has been very ordinary since the last nine months. Before that James kept him out of the team and he played well at Championship level.

I'm happy to gamble that we may have seen the best of DD especially when the deal or no deal price is around £35m. There isn't a great deal of downside to selling him at that price.

James, Mendy and Iborra were all brought in as probable first team players. I'm more than happy to cash in and allow one of those three the chance to grab their opportunity.

Drinkwater isn't a crucial player for us, he's one of our better ones assuming he finds top form but we could easily do without him.

And stick the sale proceeds in the Alliance & Leicester or buy OHL a lawn mower.

Any half decent replacement for DD with less ability would cost £40m+ in the current market. Selling DD is madness. The same cannot be said of mendy.

One thing I'd say with the Mendy passing is that the stats won't show the quality of those passes. The amount of times they were chipped up to people when all it needed was a firm pass along the floor, is my biggest gripe with him. It was causing other players to lose the ball or put the team under pressure. Very guilty of slowing play down too. But you made the point earlier; he's a screen in a 3. Not necessarily a bad player but I think he's a poor signing and would have been regardless of the injury.

With you on Musa though. Clearly a confidence thing.

"Drinkwater isn't a crucial player..."

Have you been watching us for the last 5 years?

I normally enjoy your posts, but you've got me with this one!

Drinky, Vardy & Kasper are our most important players - they set the tone, the pace & shape our identity (a much overused word, sorry).

As I have said in another thread Drinkwater has had two good seasons in 5 so not really crucial . . Yes he was good  in our promotion from the championship and awesome In  our premier title year but he has been bang average in the other years  .
