Mendy

Mendy.....been on a losing ticket in the 'fans' lottery' since he came here!

Brought in to fill the little magic boots of Kante and has disappointed most by not being able to do so! Yes, the injury royally f**ked his season, but forget that. He could have played his heart out for 30 odd games, he'd still be stigmatized in comparisons with the little wizard from Caen!

Only a quick De Lorean  time travel trip could have upgraded our midfield last season....Back to the late 90s and a return trip with Makelele in the boot!  Honestly he, Beckenbauer and possibly Viera, are the only MF I can remember who had the all encompassing talent to completely dominate the centre of the pitch, the way Kante did for us!

Poor old Nampalys was on a hiding to nothing from day one.

I could quote the dreaded 'statistics' from 2013-14 and 2014-15 to compare N'Golo and 'Papy', but it's pointless as Nice and Caen play totally dissimilar systems in a League that's totally unlike the 'Prem'! ....Mendy shades the comparison though !

He deserves a second chance to impress here and, after all, he is virtually another 'new' signing. That said, much like Riyad, his agent hasn't made particularly well thought out comments and I understand:

A): The players obvious frustration at not being able to gain a first team spot, and,

B): The fans' disappointment in what little they've seen of him.

Much like Amartey, I do think there's a player in there, we just don't seem to have fully unwrapped the parcel yet !

Good post and sums up perfectly some of our fans.

Mendy is realistically 5th choice at the moment.  He needs game time post his injury (as does James).  Is he a good player?  In flashes he looked okay but I've no real idea.

King seems seems to have the perfect mentality to be a 4th or 5th choice midfielder.  That shouldn't be underestimated.

I cant believe how many people have commented negatively on Mendy. Suggests serious mental issues, delusion being one of them, to criticise a player who has not been playing. Weirdos

Agreed. Once he is fully fit I believe he will be a good player.

"Drinkwater isn't a crucial player..."

Have you been watching us for the last 5 years?

I normally enjoy your posts, but you've got me with this one!

Drinky, Vardy & Kasper are our most important players - they set the tone, the pace & shape our identity (a much overused word, sorry).

I also said in my post that I did rate Drinkwater and he was one of our better players.

I just think over the last nine months he has to be downgraded from "crucial" for us to in that 4th-7th best player band. You could argue that Ndidi has now overtaken Drinkwater as our No1 CM.

At a £35m offer I'd happily sell Drinkwater and spark some competition to the likes of Mendy, James and Iborra to fill his boots. I don't think that weakens as much at all and gives us a chance to assess the other midfield options. No one really knows how good James (since injury), Mendy and Iborra are. It also give us £35m to keep our tinder dry in January if need be.

Back to Mendy he must be close to full fitness if he's attracting interest.

Does anyone have up to date info?

He was in some of the team training photos yesterday so he must be there or thereabouts.

Close to joining Atalanta on loan

Decent opportunity for him but they have just re signed De Roon.

Will be following them closely this season and hoping to get back to watch a live game so would be decent to have a link.

Some comments about Drinkwater lately have been laughable.

Imagine thinking Mendy can fill his shoes lol

Honestly, get in the real world.

We can't know what Mendy can or can't do until he's healthy and we see him play. We'll have the data points soon enough now that he's healthy.

Hard to argue with this. By definition, Drinky cannot be crucial when he has been replaced so capably by James. And there is no way Ndidi is sitting, so it is Drinky vs. James for the second DM slot.

Considering he's been out injured for a whole season he don't half take some stick on here

I refer back to James, out for over a season and nobody was shouting to get rid

Infact in a cameo appearance he got a massive welcome back

Give the guy a chance, he maybe something special, you don't captain ( I think he was ) if you're crap

Like I've said before Slim, Musa and Mendy must have something let them show us what it is.

Kramaric never really got a chance and look what he achieved when we shipped him out

If Matty James can come back don't see why Papy can't, either.

Too right but was he good enough in the first place?

Yes, against lower opposition but he was very much composed and in control.

It should do his confidence the world of good really, considering the bad luck he has had.

I've  been one of his fiercest critics. But I'm  sure he'll be pleased to know that after that brief show tonight I'm  prepared to give him a second chance.

How can anyone be a fierce critic of Mendy without seeing him play :dunno:
