Got out muscled by Giroud for the winner but overall had a good game. He's big and strong and can play. It'd be nice to sign another CB  next to him.

The tweet below is probably the most apt description of Maguire.

As usual some are going over the top about a noticeable and clearly committed player who is by no means flawless. It reflects the hope of having a new signing rather than any constructive analysis. We'rec conceding too many goals and it'seems not all down to the old hands.

I was impressed too but Hull had the worst goals against last season which he was part of (along with their keeper we also signed) and we've started off with that defensive performance..

It's the typical FT way to say that a certain player 'looked brilliant' after one game.

I like Maguire. I like his strength and his attitude.

But last night, our defending (WITH Maguire at CB) was miles off 'brilliant'. We conceded 4. Ramsey's goal was ridiculous..he was left on his own, and the winner saw Giroud out muscling Harry.

This isn't 'brilliant'. Brilliant is keeping a clean sheet and putting in a defensive display that is controlled, composed and safe.

I suspect very strongly that Maguire, if asked, would disagree entirely with all the nonsense on here. He would know he made errors last night and that our defence needs a big shake up

Agree with this but with the caveat that it could well have been more without him. Lost count of the amount of last ditch blocks he made. We were better for having him on the pitch which is a scary thought given that we conceded 4.

You can't expect him to come in and command the back line in his first competitive game for us, especially away at an at times rampant Arsenal front line.

The signs are there that he will be a big player for us, even moreso when he's got Huth alongside him.

He did look good last night for the most part. Kasper was also very good I thought.

Strange comments to make about a CB and Keeper when we conceded 4 goals

It was Morgan and our team defensive approach that were the issues. Like you say as individuals Kasper and Maguire impressed.

He's already demonstrated his effectiveness in the opposition box too - he's like Colossus from X-men.170px-AstonColossus.png

I was wondering where Fuchs was, at the time, since he wasn't at the back post? (Like he should have been!)  Having two Arsenal players undefended at the back post is asking for trouble...  But as I said (just now) in the post-match thread - our defence seemed to fall asleep at the ends of each half...  Still lack of mental fitness/sharpness?

I really like the look of him and thought he looked pretty good last night. Still he was at fault for their winning goal and could maybe also have done better with their 2nd.

Really excited and impressed by him.

I'm still worried and think our defence is suspect though, we need a new CB pronto to replace Wes, a RB to challenge/support Simpson, we're alright for LB because Chilwell is waiting in the wings.

Maguire is a huge improvement and upgrade on our defence but business is far from complete in that area.

I love Wes but as far as I can tell doesn't lead and organise enough, and I think that it was we miss without Huth.

Maguire looks like he's going to be a very good signing at far better value than Keane or Gibson, but I think as a unit we were poor and there clearly wasn't enough communication between everyone yesterday.

Getting over excited Hull went down for a reason and we dropped 4 last night-but Wes and Huth cant go on forever.Few months ago we were all pretty happy with Ben.

Give it six games hes easy on the eye but its results!

Love him already.

So dominant in the air and really good technically.

Only thing I worry about is his pace.

What pace?

Maguire has deceptive pace!

He's actually slower than he looks...
