I dont get his Maddison logic if  Grealish is picked when partying but aside from that his man management is top drawer. His tactics arent at that level of course but their arent many at who would be willing to manage at international level who have both traits at the highest level.

Southgate is a good fit for England and he's achieved more than most. I think it's just his substitutions that cause immense frustration.

That is definitely an unpopular opinion, after leaving Maddison out of the squad.

Do expand on that- I would be interested to hear more.

Before this ridiculous takeover they were a well run club living comfortably. Fans who didn't believe they had a divine right to be in the league because of a couple of trophies long ago. Old style stadium in a league full of new, fairly dull grounds. Had a defined way of playing and didn't preach how to play the game.

I'm not their biggest admirer but I prefer a league with a variety of teams and clubs.

All brewers should be fined for putting lactose into their products. Or prison. Or the death penalty.

All of those options fail to match up to the pain and suffering their beer causes me.

How do they manage to put prison or the death penalty into their products?

Who knows why or how mad men do the things they do?

I find some ASMR incredibly relaxing, but people that enjoy food chewing are strange!

For the record, I would have picked Maddison. However, I find it truly bizarre the way Southgate is spoken about by a lot of people in this country. You would think that he has been a complete disaster of an England manager, but that is simply not true. People definitely take it for granted that he beats teams that on paper we should be beating. We all know that football, particularly international football, often doesn't work that way.

Like with every England manager he'll only be appreciated once he's gone

He has the most heavily scrutinised job in the country. I certainly wouldn't want it!

I think he’s a complete disaster.

International football isn’t entirely predictable, but we have been incredibly lucky with the draws in both his tournaments, and he’s contrived to lose to every team we are in the same league as. He Brendaned us against Italy, contriving to stop us attacking when dominating, then removing our every threat as soon as they were in the ascendancy. Barely used Grealish when absolutely flying, persisted with Kane  who was dogshit even by his own farcically low international standards. If we had had Vestergaard on the bench, Southgate would have put him on.

Niceish guy, bang average tactically and incompetent, inconsistent selector. Should have been sacked after World Cup.

England have beaten Croatia, Spain and Germany under Southgate.

Surely the main issue with that Gervais skit is that its so inherently...unfunny?

"Trans women have beards and cocks ahaha you just don't know which toilet they're gonna use do you !" is genuinely sub playground patter from the 90s for ****s sake.

Outdated old man tries to be funny and "edgy"... ends up just being a sad old man.

With so many target to attack...punching down is a sad indictment of a once brilliant comedian.

Absolutely. Anyone would think his predecessors won every tournament going and we were the world's best before he took over.

He's not been perfect, but for two major competitions in a row he has bought back the excitement and anticipation following England, as well as bringing the squad together. And he's done it his way.

The pathetic tribalism from some Leicester fans over Maddison as well it quite something, too. Put him in a Villa shirt and I doubt there'd be quite as much weird outrage. I get that people think he should be in, but he clearly doesn't think he fits his plans. To throw your dummy out and go "well I'm not watching anymore" just because JM plays for us is... Bizarre.

I'm just not sure who people want, and who people think would've done a better job in WC 18 and Euro 2020. As Horsey says, when he's gone and his successor doesn't do as well, we'll miss him.

Just feels fashionable to criticise and trash anything related to Southgate tbh.

Yeah, a semifinal and a final in the last two tournaments when measured against previous recent records should really speak for itself.

And the "easy draw" argument is fallacious too - I didn't see England beating Iceland in 2016 or dominating the group in 2010, for instance.

This is the right thread for this post. Watching England is so boring under Southgate, he is a terrible but lucky manager.

The easy draw comments are always silly I find as you could go through almost any teams route to a major seni final or final this century and argue there was an element of luck with the route.

At the Euros, you could argue Italy won a relatively easy group, needed extra time to beat Austria, beat a Belgium team who are famous for choking in crunch matches and needed penalties to beat Spain and England. No-one referred to Italy's route being easy which is fair as they full deserved to win the Euros of course.

On the England point, the golden generation was massively overrated.

Everyone looks back at the 2002-2006 teams and think they had a great first XI that should have won trophies. While they were very good players, it is conveniently forgotten that France, Italy, Brazil and others had much better teams. Also, outside of the first XI, the squad was a bit average anyway.

Of course we did well. But we did not get over the line and that is the small margins that count. England started well in the World Cup semi final and the Euro final but lost the momentum to win when it mattered. I am not anti Southgate and he deals with the media well. It will be more difficult in Qatar but let us get behind the team whoever is picked.
