Appleton MotD Interview - staying a No 2

Recommended Posts

Did anyone else read into Appleton's Match of Day interview what I did ?  When asked about wanting the Manager's job permanently, he said, "I just want to stay a Number 2, that's what I was taken on to do 4 months ago and nothing's changed".  I read, 'the club have lined / are lining up a new Manager (probably from abroad) and they will want him to keep Appleton as First Team Coach'.  My thought, is that it will be Pellegrini (with Cousillas as his Assistant) - and Appleton will be used in 'the Brian Kidd role' which Pellegrini used at Man City ?

Appleton wants in

Michael Appleton has reiterated his desire to take the Leicester job following Saturday's 2-1 win over Swansea City.

Appleton was in caretaker command after Craig Shakespeare's midweek sacking, and Leicester fully merited the three points handed to them by Federico Fernandez's first-half own goal and Shinji Okazaki's fifth of the season just after the interval.

Speaking after the win which moved them out of the relegation zone, Appleton insisted the victory has not changed his mind on becoming a full-time candidate for the job.

"One game doesn't make you a Premier League manager and I'm very aware of that," Appleton said. "But I'm also aware that I'd like to think as an assistant I'm more than capable of doing that role.

"I've done it twice now - I had 15 months at West Brom and here at Leicester - and I'd love an opportunity to continue to do that. I signed a three-year deal in the summer to be the assistant manager.

"I walked away from an environment at Oxford in League One which was quite stable, and I thought I was doing the same thing at Leicester.

"Nothing's changed from my point of view, I would love to honour the contract I signed in the summer but those things are out of my control."

how does that reiterate his desire to take the job?

Literally every bit there in the quotes says he sees himself as an assistant and is capable of doing that role. Wants to continue to be an assistant and will honour the contract he's been given to do that role?

I heard Appleton's appointment was entirely a Rudkin decision, though Shakespeare concurred because he'd worked with him previously. IF Rudkin wields as much power as posters on here have reported, then it would be no surprise if Appleton stays under a new regime.

I don't get it.

The bloke is saying he likes being an assistant manager. Nothing more, nothing less.

It doesn't mean we've lined up anyone and it doesn't mean he wants to be a manager.

That could be interpreted as "doing that role" = PL manager

Read between the lines.

The only reason he said he signed to be a No2 was because he knows he has next to no chance of getting the job and if he made his intentions public of wanting the job then he's a threat to the new manager who will want him out on his arrival.

He'd obviously take the job in a heartbeat, if you notice he never says unequivocally he doesn't want the job.

I think we all know we have no-one 'lined up'. With the way the club is run it'd be a shock if we've even looked at the applications let alone started shortlisting.

I saw it like it this.

I signed a three year contract and I'd like the club to honour it, otherwise I will expect compensation if you sack me.

Which is exactly what I would do if I was him.......... Nobody wants to be out of work in football.

There's not that many jobs about.

sounds like he's more concerned about losing his no 2 job entirely if a new manager comes in wanting to bring his own assistants, so keeping any job at all is his priority at the moment. i'm sure he'd take no 1 if offered, though I'd be surprised if he gets it permanently.

I reckon however there's a decent chance we won't get an appointment sometime in the next 1.5 months. I've had a small bet on appleton to manage at least 9 more games as caretaker @ 25/1, by my calculations this takes us to around early-mid dec.

He lnows that if he stays or goes will be up to the next manager.

He is saying " i am honouring my contract" to make sure the thais have no escape from paying up his contract if the new guy doesnt want him.

That's sendible for him... and doesnt mean anything else.

You could argue that he would be more likely to say this if he thought it was obvious he was to be let go

The man wants to keep his job and left a decent job behind him to come here. It's sadly though going to be up to the incoming manager and what he wants.

Accept we were poor against Huddersfield and Bournemouth, and the club got slaughtered on here for two away points...yesterday's results for both those teams would suggest they were decent points gained, particularly from poor performances....not losing when not playing well.....there is no balance on here...we are either crap or brilliant....

He knows realistically that the club will never give him the managers job but he probably wants to stay here!, and work with the new manager to gain more experience of coaching a Premier League side!

Agree, he is content with the number 2 position at Leicester, but he isn't going to pretend he has no aspiration to manage in the Prem again. He does, and further, he believes he is capable of doing a bang-up job. But he signed on to be a number 2 here, and that is what he will be, unless someone decides otherwise.
