Vardy will be more effective against tougher opponents as opposed to group fodder.

Not sure we can call anyone who qualified 'fodder'.  Doubt we'll dominate the ball in any of our group games. Panama, maybe, maybe not.

Jamie Vardy has evolved into a complete centre-forward, says Danny Higginbotham

Jamie Vardy has evolved into a complete centre-forward at Leicester and could be a key figure for England at the World Cup, according to Danny Higginbotham.

Vardy has scored seven goals in his last nine appearances for Claude Puel's side and is expected to feature in England's upcoming friendlies against Netherlands and Portugal.

"He's a player who, in my opinion, keeps getting better and better," former defender Higginbotham told Sky Sports. "Claude Puel has just said that he is the complete centre-forward and I do tend to agree with that.

"They have a lot more possession under Puel than they did under previous managers and that's because other teams are showing them a lot more respect now.

"So what we're seeing now is a lot of teams sitting back and saying, 'We're not going to leave you any space in behind'.

"Where previously there was space in behind, there's nothing, so what's happening now is that Vardy is tending to drop deep.

Danny Higginbotham analyses Jamie Vardy's movement at Leicester

"What he does then is he asks questions of the centre-backs because, more often than not, one of the centre-backs is going to go with him."

By pulling a centre-back out of position, Higginbotham says, Vardy is able to create space for him and his team-mates to run into.

"Because one of the centre-backs is stepping up, it means the rest of the defence is going to step up as well.

"All of a sudden, the space that wasn't there before is becoming more apparent again. The space is there for Jamie Vardy to get into and he does that really well.

Jamie Vardy has been in fine form for Leicester recently

"What really stands out about him now is that he's so happy to drop deep, to get the ball and turn and play it wide to either [Demarai] Gray or [Riyad] Mahrez, and his next movement will be to get into that space which has been vacated by the centre-back.

"It's full credit to Jamie Vardy and to Claude Puel, who has noticed that he's not just a player who can run in behind, he's also an intelligent centre-forward.

"It's something that could be very interesting and very important in the World Cup, especially when England play Tunisia and Panama. I imagine those two nations will sit deep, but the movement of Jamie Vardy will cause them problems."

That’s a great article and it’s true. I certainly think that Mahrez has hugely benefited from the way Vardy plays now as he creates space for the other forward players. JV never gets credit for his footballing intelligence; on the pitch he makes great runs and often goes wide to stretch play and play in his teammates.

Worst England XI in my lifetime and I’m old enough to remember Carlton Palmer and Andy Sinton.

Friendly or not we’re 3 months away from a World Cup. Wasted opportunity to try out some viable partnerships rather than pissing about with Walker at centre back.

I've just said the same. Granted, you're older than me but in the space of 10-12 years we've gone from the likes of Owen, Beckham, Gerrard, Campbell, Cole etc who were all good players to this.

Horrific line up. I guess he wants to give as many people as possible a start over the 2 games, but we're building up to a world cup and 3 (4 if you count Gomez) full backs, Henderson and Lingard is absolute AIDS.

Pretty woeful team that is. Not a big fan of lingard at all. I get friendlies are for experimenting and if that's the case play the players like Mawson and the Burnley lad instead of that shit. It will be the usual lot that will go to the World Cup if only half fit so may as well try the new guys in these games

Love it how they are tryin to paint it to be something it's not, "plenty for England to be happy about" really, what who's happy about the most boring half of football seen this season, and old huddle has to be the most biast t##t on TV

What a surprise, a starting line up packed with shite players who are picked because they play for top 6 clubs. From what I can see, Pickford was the only starter who doesn't play for a club in the top 6.

Southgate is a joke, falling into the same old trap that every England manager falls into. Get ready to crash out in the groups at the World Cup.

So boring. No real chances. Clive Tyldesley must have been smoking the local stuff going on about how great we were. Shite.

Jordan Henderson is woeful too. The fact he's playing is glaring evidence that England's midfield options are worse than they've ever been. The man has the arm band too. My god we're doomed.
