For me this is the question.

I thought they were due back this coming Monday? Their fitness should be fine, they've been training with England, and they've had their 3 week break. So, it wouldn't be a case of them being burnt out if they play against Man U. We can't begrudge them a holiday, but if they are back in training, then they are available to play.

Maybe Puel wants more time with them regarding tactics etc. but that shouldn't prevent them from playing, especially if the other options are Benny and Slimani.

This.

They aren't new signings, they've played with most the team already over last season and before so if fit and refreshed, which they should be, I see no reason why either shouldn't be starting next week. I understand Puel will have been planning and working on things for this game, without them at his disposal, but they are so important to us and such a level up from players like Benny, you have to start them if back and fit.

I think it's all a bit shambolic how much a WC year affects national leagues.

Your club pays your wages, and if I'm honest, we NEED the best result possible against united, nobody wants to start the season with a drumming. I'd have wanted them back last week to be honest, fit and ready for MU.

I must admit I feel similar. I'm definitely a club before country supporter and as pleased as I was for England, they only got as far as they did by playing luck of the draw lower level teams losing against any half decent side. Our club pays huge amouts in these players wages and if they choose to use some of their holiday up playing for England  (or not, as in Vardy's case), and then players like Maguire having to have a shorter time on the piss in Ibiza, that's down to them. With a full strength side they may have snatched a valuable point against United, but with the sort of defence we'll have to put out we risk a drubbing which could have serious effects on early season confidence. Such a drubbing would also cause the usual overeaction on here with the 'Puel out I told you so' brigade in full vocal swing.

I think they will both be in the squad for Man Utd.

Mourinho has been saying that Melchester will be at a disadvantage with hardly any available players - Claude was just trying to balance it up.

I don't have any problem with them taking the mandated three-week holiday.

Equally, I'm sure both of them will want to play at Old Trafford.

There's no law that says they can't do both - and any decision not to play them is a matter for Puel, not them.

If he decides not to play them because they've 'only' had a week with the squad pre-season then that's his call - and he will have to take responsibility for whatever happens.

It is a short off season for Vardy and Maguire.

People are always complaining about burn out for players during a premier league season, hence the argument for a mid season break.

I would have thought that a period of rest would be an essential part of the pre season training/conditioning.

Also, I wouldn't want to be the one to tell Harry to get off his lazy backside and get back to work.

I would be amazed if either player

is in the squad. Their fitness and sharpness will take at least 2 weeks and they will not be risked for one game which could put them back for weeks.

Long season ahead and whilst we will clearly be weaker I am not convinced it will make massive difference with them being only 70% match fit should they be risked.

I'm a great believer in quality rest and a break for athletes. The body will break down at some point if it's constantly challenged.

A few weeks in the sun, good food and a few beers and nothing more strenuous than walking the dog or cycling and swimming with the kids. It's important physically as well as mentally to switch off and have a complete break. If I was a manager I'd be trying to give my important players a 7-10 holiday in January/February as well just so they switch off for a bit and recharge mentally and physically for the second half of the season.  Maybe send three players off at a time and run with what you have for certain games or 3rd round FA Cup matches if you draw a lower league side.

Which is exactly what they will have had - 3 weeks actually. So they should be nice and refreshed. They then start back in training this Monday. They shouldn't have lost too much fitness over three weeks, and they'd certainly still be better than Benny and Slim/Other option. I don't think anyone is saying they shouldn't have a holiday. I think we'd just like to see them back as soon as possible doing their job after they've enjoyed their holiday.

Well I think its a disgrace. I dare say these guys dream of playing top level football as kids. They probably get paid more in a week than most earn in 2 or more years and they can’t sacrifice a week or so off, to go and play for their club at the theatre of dreams. They should have reported back last week.

I agree 100%. If they cared for our club they'd be ready to play against Manure.

But they are not forced to take it.

He's not trolling, he's learning disabled.

This would be trolling if it wasn't true.

Think some are missing the point. I am not questioning entitlement, I am questioning a player preferring to be in Ibiza rather than play in the Premier League at the start of the season.

My lad loves football so much he would prefer to cut short his holiday if his team had a match on. So I just can’t understand a person picking Ibiza over Old Trafford.

When they retire, they won’t have the choice over the two, and I personally think they have made the wrong choice.

Nothing to do with money, nothing to do with fitness, purely about the decision to pick Ibiza over playing football in the best league in the world.

It is a very short career and why anyone would want to miss the opportunity is beyond me

I'd bet your lad can go out with his mates and play football for about six hours straight as well with no problems?

This is professional football with high intensity which is why they play a fine line between optimal fitness and injuries, it's worlds apart.

So we can expect everyone who does play to be "all guns blazing" because they have had the required preparation time.
