Spurs, Man City, Leeds, Man U, Arsenal, Wolves and then us is their next 7...that’s pretty bloody tough!

Love that. Bye bye hammers

An interesting concept, and not a bad set of metrics for where everybody is placed.  I can’t read the Athletic article that shows its workings, but I’d be thrilled to understand how they measured player quality, which puts Spurs above Man City and Liverpool, and Villa above us...

Also crowds that has us below Birmingham, wolves and charlton

The crowd measure is a bit questionable because it's clearly affected by how big are the capacity of the club's stadiums.

Its not helped by them adding weighting in for record attendances. Charlton crash the top 20 based on a record attendance from 80+ years that is 4 x what their maximum capacity has been for 50+ years. Might be wrong but I'm not sure if they've even completely sold out their ends when they've made Wembley playoffs... Whatever happened to @Lamby anyway?

Serious question, does anyone actually WANT to be considered part of the big six?

It doesn't really mean anything, does it? Its a tag attached to you by the media that awards you more coverage but that brings with it more scrutiny, criticism and pressure to the team. Not to mention plastic fans from places like Africa that add nothing to our club but a skewed and warped appearance to who we actually are.

I'll take finishing top 6 year in, year out without their mainstream acceptance quite gladly.

True but then Tottenham are extremely, extremely borderline and barely squeeze in to make it a "six." It's insecurity in the knowledge they don't really belong at the top table either that has them lashing out and the nearest thing approaching, which is us.

Big 6 is primarily based on numbers of gloryhunting fans which therefore amounts to more viewers. Spurs are only in there because a run of top 4 finishes made them impossible to ignore. They are miles behind the other 5 in terms of gloryhunting fanbase and will be dropped by sky in the next couple of seasons if they carry on the way they are. Itl become the big 5.

The 'Big 6' is just a term for the six clubs that have markedly higher revenue compared to the rest of the league (link). It isn't a purely footballing term (i.e. league finishes), nor is it a term for media attention, fan-base etc., but I understand that it's easy to equate them.

We will likely not be part of the Big 6 for a few more years - if ever. Interestingly though, the gap between Man Utd and Arsenal is bigger than between us and Arsenal, so maybe it will be a 'big 5' simply because Arsenal will be closer to the 'rest'.

the sad thing about that 'big club list' is that it seems to haver been done under 'the athletic' umbrella.

i thought they were a serious group of journos - turns out they are just another HITC !

tbh, i don't care if were first or fifty first - the only list that counts is the one where we are currently third.

the standard of journalism is sometimes so poor ……  if a job is too big to take on then don't bother doing it !!

You're preaching to the choir. I fully agree with you.

But I also fully stand by what I said about Tottenham.

Tottenham are not an international power house, they're no more a massive name around the globe than Everton, Villa or any other "traditional" Premier League club, they just had a moment in the sun because they were qualifying regularly for the Champions League.

They're definitely boosted by being in the capital, that'll help them fill in their stadium with football tourists to give the perception of having a massive fan base once they realise 60'000 hardcore Spurs fans don't actually exist once they drop back to mid table.

They're just the Premier League's Wolfsburg, Leverkusen, Betis or Villareal. Clubs we think of as "big" when they qualify for Europe but quickly forget about when they're not.

They have a massive head start on the rest outside the Big 6. It's also quite telling that they surpassed Chelsea and Arsenal despite only recently getting some success. I wouldn't be so sure about them falling away into relative obscurity.

Clearly a Spurs fan if he thinks Spurs have the strongest squad in the league. I mean, really? That's delusions of grandeur. In his opinion we have the 12th strongest squad 😂 I refuse to take anything like this seriously when Spurs are ranked above us.

Based only on internationals.  An ordinal ranking giving equal weight to England internationals (all-time) and players sent to the 2018 World Cup.

Very debatable method IMO ... gives too much weight to the distant past, and only considers one tournament for the recent past and present.  Factoring in something like transfermarkt total squad value would have balanced it better.

These are the type of tables Spurs fans take as gospel; clearly Tottenham deserve a trophy for such a remarkable showing

Trophies in the last 20 years part is very flawed, teams like Everton who have been too good to go down but not good enough to win a major trophy get maximum points where as teams like Wolves who haven’t won a major trophy get less points for winning league 1 and the championship. Otherwise a decent effort.

Few more trophies as well, nice to think it’s actually possible over the next few years.

100% this. These lot are no giants, they're a traditional mid table club that have been doing really well (by their standards) for a few years, just like Newcastle when they had Sir Bobby. They have no right calling themselves a big six club when they have nothing to show for it, at least the other clubs in there actually win trophies and earn their place. Even Arsenal have a recent FA Cup, Spurs have won f#ck all.

I think they're already in the process of returning to normal and consistent mid table finishes. Kane will leave this summer if he's got any sense, and I rate their chances of getting Rodgers as zero after they sack Mourinho.

I can't see them filling their stadium if they're consistently mid table either, the size of their fan base won't be too different to the size of ours following the league win, which propelled the club and made LCFC a household name.
