All true but why play in a quarter full stadium in front of 5000 fans when you can be booed by 32000 at the KP every week?

We spent way more than that on fringe players. I'd not rule it out, especially on an exceptional player.

We spent it boosting the squad in

multiple areas. £40m on a single player constitutes a huge investment and a huge risk for a club of our size. Our last accounts give a good indication of where we are finance wise.

We were talking about bringing in the LB at Celtic to replace Chilwell when he goes, seems like this would take care of things in a fairly straightforward fashion. Or someone like Mendy has real value at this point, prob could get a quick 20 mill if a Prem team needs a destroyer. If we got a hot bid for Maguire, great, we have a number of young CBS waiting in the wings.

Besides, while Tiel has been strong for us, surely we can track down another player or two with his skill set? We should be looking for young understudies for him even if we sign him, he isn't a long-term solution. BR knows what he needs, we have significant assets even if we lack significant cash (which seems incredibly unlikely in any event), we have more than enough to improve the squad significantly by moving Maguire, Chilwell, and Mendy, with Chilwell being the only player of those 3 we'd need to replace from outside the club.

We haven't sold anyone yet. If we sell two players for £100m+, then it changes things. But we haven't so I'll talk about the here and now.

Why couldn’t we buy a 40m player? We spent 23m on Soyuncu and 12m for Danny Ward and both combined have less than 10 appearances for the club. Benkovic cost 12m (I think?) and was loaned to Celtic after one appearance. That’s nearly 50m spent “frivolously” right there. Silva’s fee would constitute 15-20m of the price and don’t forget we also made a 40m bid for Gylfi Sigurdsson two seasons ago too. Yes last season we were boosted by the Mahrez money but we are hardly up against it thanks to our brilliant owners.

We could definitely afford him, though perhaps it would mean he’s our only marquee signing and we’d have to skrimp and save elsewhere. But our squad is in good shape at the moment plus I bet we could easily loan a good player from a European competing team after the success of Tielemans.

Did you look at our last accounts? Unless we sell players for huge money we no way will have cash for a £40m cm as well as the sort of striker we will also need.

Our last accounts are dated from some time ago (May 31st 2017) and don't include the Mahrez or Iborra sales. Also don't forget about prize money from our end of season finishing place. (Above is last year's prize money).

Maybe as of today we don't have the money in our accounts, but at the end of the season we probably will. There is a reason why teams like West Ham and Everton have been able to spend big on players like Richarlison and Felipe Anderson as neither of those made big money sales and also have to comply with FFP.

what? no he wasn’t. we got him from chelsea reserves- never played a game for them. we were quoted a fee of £60,000 but wanted him on loan first, he played well and the fee rose to £600,000

If we hadn't have gone up he wouldn't have had any interest in coming to us.

But Soyuncu, Ward, Ghezzal and Benkovic could all flop and we lose 40m very quickly. I think they would pay it for an exceptional talent. They dont seem arsed about going up to £25m for players, plus I think we will sell Chilwell or Maguire for silly money so we will make an attempt to get him I'm sure.

Okay you've got me. There is no concrete quote from the player himself ruling out a move.

Feel better?

yes loads and loads.

Does that make YOU feel better to see me type that?

strange behavior, Foxile!

It's not, really.

At the time Muzzy was in the shop window. He was too good a player for the team he joined. When we went up we had improved enough stock.

A parallel to Tielemans. He is probably a shade too good for us.

that might all be somewhat true and logical to you, but it remains your opinion. If he truly was too good a player, why was he playing in chelsea’s reserves and in the last year of his contract?  it’s not like he had a host of clubs wanting to sign him when we did? he was later told of interest from Fulham but they never came in with an offer.

you’re underestimating how much he truly blossomed with the first team football we gave him. We helped to make him the player he became. He was technically gifted , we could see that but so is ghezzal apparently - take more than technical skills to make a player and we got that out of him.

Haven’t we already signed away the Mahrez fee and next season’s prize money to that Australian bank?

I don't understand why everyone is arguing about the clubs finances. We don't know what the club is capable of or willing to spend, as with most clubs unless you're run by the porn brothers posting everything on Twitter.

I love watching Youri play and will hopefully get to watch him play for us more next season as well, but if it doesn't happen for whatever reason then good luck to him, he's got a damn bright future and I'm proud that our club could have even a small part of that.

There is a big difference between spending 40/50 m on a 22 year old and 30m on a 28 year old ........

tielemans is always going to be worth at least what we paid for him when we sell him on ......... so it’s more like comparing an interest only product in a slowly rising market  than a normal type mortgage in a falling market .......(eg Youri/slim)

They also don't include over £100m worth of purchases. We took a loan out secured against the Mahrez money to pay for infrastructure projects, we've taken another loan out secured against the prize money for the next three years. The prize money basically pays the wages (£119m last accounts). We still owe a crazy amount on past transfers as well.

The second point makes no sense, they spent big because they didn't sell anyone? They spent big because West Hams gate receipts are double ours, commercial revenue 1/3 more. They basically make about £30m more a season.
