Premier League Thread 2019/20

Totally agree with what Pickford says. In general new England players have a honeymoon period of about a year where if they are being picked regularly for squads while not being the best player in the league, their heads will be called for. Maguire was a bit of a cult hero for England even as recently as last summer, then off he trots to Man Utd and suddenly he's not even League One standard. The same will happen to Maddison if and when he leaves to join a bigger side. Everyone wants him in the squad now but his popularity will soon go down.

Those calling for Henderson to be our #1 ahead of Pickford will soon blush when they realise he's on Man Utd's books.

I've not read what Pickford has said, but sounds to me like he's worried about his spot in the team. Good.

Pickford is too rash at times as a keeper and no way near the best shot stopper we have. He's good with his feet and his distribution is generally good.

It depends on what we want our keeper to be. If we want the best shot stopper then imo we go with Henderson but otherwise its Pickford for his all round play and distribution.

With the Premier League season edging towards Easter, top-flight players are starting to run the risk of being banned.

An accumulation of 10 yellow cards will result in that player having to complete a two-match suspension, a penalty that often causes major headaches for managers.

Several stars are nearing the suspension mark this term and could face a stint on the sidelines in the next few weeks.

Premier League yellow cards
Jorginho, Chelsea – 9

Jefferson Lerma, Bournemouth – 9

Luka Milivojevic, Crystal Palace – 9

Lewis Dunk, Brighton and Hove Albion – 8

Ashley Westwood Burnley – 8

Philip Billing, Bournemouth – 7

Issa Diop, West Ham – 7

Abdoulaye Doucoure, Watford – 7

John Fleck, Sheffield United – 7

Ilkay Gundogan, Manchester City – 7

Mateo Kovacic, Chelsea – 7

Romain Saiss, Wolverhampton Wanderers – 7

James Ward-Prowse, Southampton – 7

Callum Wilson, Bournemouth – 7

Stats correct as of February 9

A quick look at our disciplinary record shows we’re the most disciplined team in the league. 25YCs 0RCs, Evans and Soy both on 4 yellows as our highest recipients of cards. That’s pretty good going.

I'd start Pope over either of them.

I'd take Henderson, Pope and Ramsdale to the Euros. Pickford has better distribution than all three, and in a perfect world we could pick a keeper on one attribute like that, but it's not. We let teams get in on our goal quite a lot, and Pickford makes far too many mistakes to be trusted behind a rocky defence. First and foremost we need the best at keeping the ball out the net, keeping calm and commanding his area. Pickford is the weakest in all three departments.

So I'm right in saying they're both one yellow off? That's a little bit daunting. lol

Man City vs West Ham rearranged for 19th Feb, just few days before playing us.

That's potentially very good news for us. They play Real Madrid a week later so perhaps they'll use the West Ham game to get their main players match fit after 17 days without a game and then play a team against us with the much more important Real Madrid game in mind?

If they beat West Ham they'll be 15pts clear of 5th with 12 games to go so the league games should take less priority than the cup games for Man City.

they will not want to give us the chance of getting second ahead of them - ours is a game they will be putting it all into, irrespective of the madrid game. whilst they may be playing some of their 'lesser' players, it doesn't usually make any difference with them !

Couldn't they have just played it next weekend?

Doesn't really give the two teams their break though. They would have trained all last week in preparation and then had to train all this week too.
