Dunk not even the best Brighton CB, Tarkowski and Ake good options imo Problem is these stats are not always a good indicator. Burnley's style of play means Tark & Mee are going to rack up block after block.

Didn’t know that to be fair, massive factor. I’ve seen a lot of comments from (seemingly) reasonable Bournemouth fans saying Fraser would go for 25-30 and Ake would cost 50-60. Crazy.

Centre backs 6 feet or under: Sergio Ramos, Thiago Silva, Marquinhos, Umtiti, Azpilicueta (played there under Conte in the back 3 and was arguably the best cb in the league that year), Puyol, Cannavaro, Bobby Moore, Daley Blind, Otamendi, Djené (5'9 and in the Spanish league team of the season). All minus a couple are considered world class. Height is useful but isn't the only important factor for a centre back. Height is good for heading but also makes turning and accelerating much more difficult. Although I think Maguire is overall a better player than Ake, I think Ake might suit us better. We are now pressing high up the pitch and having our defensive line up on the half way line. The pace, recovery speed and distance covered by a smaller player will be very useful to us when teams start to panic and lump long balls in behind.

If they're still interested in Gray, then we could possibly get Ake and Fraser for around £50m and Gray, then? I'd be all over that.

rachhere Posted 4 August 2019 Posted 4 August 2019 2 minutes ago, SheppyFox said: Honestly can’t remember who but I read someone reliable on here say they were expecting 3 at the back ? I think that was talking about Dunk and the fact that Brighton have bought an extra defender because they are going 3 at the back, and not because they are preparing to sell him.

Probably the same reasons prop forwards are - centre-halves are big, so a coach looks for a big player to be one. Self-fulfilling prophecy.

Are you sure they were talking about us? I think you might have read @The Bear talking about Wolves. I've not heard or read anything about us playing 3 at the back, and we would have prepared for 3 at the back if that was the plan, surely. Probably would have played some of the friendlies with 3 at the back if that was the case. We're talking about whether we have enough CBs for 2 at the back, nevermind 3!

Literally no chance we're playing all pre-season with a back four and then suddenly switching to 3 at the back once the season starts...
Wizerud Posted 4 August 2019 Posted 4 August 2019 Ake, Tarkowski and Dunk in that order. Honestly I like all three but the thought that we'd have to pay more for any of them than we spent on Tielemans is mind-boggling. I'd be surprised if Bournemouth would be interested in selling both Fraser and Ake to the same team in the same window. What message would that send to their fans? They're probably thinking that with a good season they could be close to us in the table.
