Very worrying for the future economy. You can extend this to all retail, museums, theatres people working at sporting venues, anyone involved with airlines, and travel, even people running their own B&Bs etc etc.

Don't think the government has a plan to really deal with this side of things.

Government should just pay everyone's wages for a year. There's what about 30million in full time work? Roughly average 30k a year.

Trillion quid should cover it.

I've got a mild flu like illness I've had for a few days now but have no idea if this is that or some other bug, pretty much no sneezing with coughing but I had to go bed yesterday evening early because I was that wiped, feel wiped even now, like some kind of fugue state but need to get some milk and stuff.

Have no idea if this is it but was down the match Monday evening, hope it isn't it otherwise others there will have it too I guess.

I'd imagine it'll be a nationwide decision Deb tbh.

I bet the FA took the decision on the back of postponing the PL/EFL games to cascade it down to grass roots football too.

Fvck knows what I'll do with my weekend now!

The FA has said grass roots football can continue for now, at least that's the statement on the website.

Yes. My wife works in this and there is no coherent plan from the government on this. Frankly a disgrace. Those who need care at home will end up in hospital if they can't get it.

The UK government are clearly gambling that infection by this virus confers immunity. I really hope that they have firm evidence to this effect.

I’m also a bit concerned about this idea of people who suspect that they have the virus just self isolating, and not being tested unless symptoms become severe (that’s what I understand the policy to be). Are these people added to stats of confirmed or suspected? If not the stats are quite useless.

More importantly, many people who have a minor sore throat or cough will be tempted to ignore advice and carry on as usual until symptoms develop further. If tests were freely available as per Korea, these people could confirm their status easily and most I’m sure would then self isolate.

The more I think about the UK government’s response, the less convinced I am that they are acting in the best interests of the populace.

I don't know exactly how the testing works in SK but they're really does need to be a better, quicker test that can be done as close to the community as possible. Our government must just feel that it won't have the capability or capacity to test everyone and so has given up.

But you'd think for the immunity gamble to work you'd need a good grasp on the amount of your populace that has immunity. I know part of the rationale at least is that normal respiratory infections are on the slide at this time of year so anybody with symptoms can be assumed clinically to have Covid19 (flu largely diagnosed clinically rather than tested) but again they won't have the numbers on this if people just isolate.

I presume they're confident they can model this out based on confirmed cases in hospitals and whatever other variables they use but it is unconvincing for sure.

Whilst it might be unconvincing I wouldn't go as far as to say they're not acting in people's best interests. We don't know what people's best interests are ofc but I don't believe they're not trying to. Most of what they're doing is too 'clever' (I use that word crudely) to be Boris, Dom and a group of spotty SpAds. The UK has struck gold in the sense that the current CMO happens to be an expert in infectious disease and epidemics whilst the CSO also has a medical background and was head of R&D at GSK. They're also advised by a team of academics from various universities but it is still encouraging to see the backgrounds of those two post holders as they could easily have had other specialisms at this time.

Finally, I'm not really sure that the UK's strategy is as big a departure from many others as some people make out. The government has been quite clear measures are coming further down the line so the major difference is timing)(that's still a significant difference but its not quite the same as the UK being out on a limb on its own). For example, Merkel's speech the other day suggested the German view wasn't all that far from the UK's

That's not a bad idea actually, very quickly the whole system will be screwed if people have no money. It's like there a no preparations put in place if the country grinds to a halt and it's a bit too carry on as normal and we'll cross those bridges when we come to it for me. One thing's for certain, there's going to be a lot of staffless Mcdonalds when all these students bugger off to Kent.

Interesting, thanks Deb.

Looks like the FA have left it up to each region/district/league to make the call and for whatever reason ours have decided to postpone.

Are your games still going ahead up there?

they could make it a permanent thing and then everyone could go out and help their local community, arts or sports association.

Yes my daughter plays tomorrow away to Market Harborough, and that's still going ahead. I only checked the website because I expected the group chat to be full of talk about all games being cancelled so I was surprised to find it full of chat about what kind of boots they're allowed to wear instead!

I'm glad your daughter can still play tomorrow - that's good news. I'm a bit pissed of that all our games are postponed down here and it just feels all a bit inconsistent.

Oh well, hope she wins!

I’ve just seen a post on Facebook saying help support your local retailer the big boys can look after themselves. That might be true of the supermarkets who’s cash flow has been boosted by everyone buying everything but for a lot of retailers and those they employ it’s worrying.

The first quarter of the year is generally the slowest time in terms of sales. Retail wasn’t in the best of shape anyway. Now people aren’t going out there for the fear of catching this and those not fortunate enough to be able to work from home looking down the barrel of either not working or £95 a week sick pay.

Rent quarter at the end of this month. How long do you think retailers employing thousands are going to be able to foot the wage bill with vastly reduced sales?

.......2nd full day of self isolation for me , not sure I could take more than 7 days of this so maybe the govt  are correct in delaying more drastic edicts.

Have a fever, general malaise, a few aches and itches, light headaches but nothing wrong with breathing so wondering if I picked up a bug at the match on Monday night.  Whatever it is hopefully will not develop into something worse.

That is coronavirus what you are describing. You should be self isolating either way.

1000's of people in this country have it and in most cases mildly, however most cases will not self isolate, they will be at work, down the pub, in the shops......spreading it around like butter on hot toast.

Few weeks time it will be absolute carnage in this country.

This is a bit the point, isn’t it? Vulnerable people rely on other people. Other people, especially helpful ones, are very very likely to be exposed. In a very few days, there will be no one in medicine unexposed to a case of the virus. They can’t all self-isolate, or if they do everybody vulnerable will die.

It might sound callous, but we’re all getting it anyway, so let everyone get on with their lives and the vulnerable people stay isolated as far as they can. If the ‘healthy’ population all get it soon, then we also get it over with, and can get on with caring for people, buying, selling, preparing food, fixing water pipes etc.
