Well Barnes is potentially not going to be fit ..... he was on the fringes of the debate when he was so it’s no surprise to see him discounted now. Probably too late now but should've been tried in a friendly some time. He has also pulled out the squad a few times and I don't think Southgate likes that. I've thought about this a bit but really we want Chelsea in there with us, for purely selfish reasons. We swim in the same pond as Everton and West Ham generally, we'll attract a similar level of player, we may have the same targets from time to time. Guys like Thauvin and Otavio are going to be looking at clubs about our size if they want to move to the Prem. Everton may have a bit more fame, West Ham might be in the capital, but if one of us has champions league football and the others don't it's a no brainer. I appreciate wanting other underdogs to upset the apple cart but self improvement is everything for us. The window of opportunity is sliding shut. After a few crap years, United are undeniably slowly righting the ship, Chelsea have spending power back and have gotten rid of Lampard, Man City proved their wobble was just a blip which bodes well for Liverpool who will be back with a bang next year. We need our best recruitment yet over the next six or so months if we want to be competing top four again next year. Personally think he should be in the squad, even if he isn't played every game. Depending on the opposition, he could be a great asset for when teams are sitting deeper and we need that delivery. Really interesting watch tbf. Yes but I cant help thinking this is the perennial Man Utd vs Liverpool rivalry point and Neville getting his dig in. Trent has not been at his high standards this year but he maybe coming into form in time. I certainly think he is worth a place in the squad. He's got a platform to try and win the FA Cup and get CL qualification and all the exposure and hype that comes with that. He'll possibly make the 1st cut of the squad when he names 30 players that will then get cut to 23 so he'll then need to take any chance he gets from the off. Beating West Ham would be a huge step in securing CL football.. Beating Southampton just means a meeting with Manchester City in the final.... His ability with the ball is unsurpassable by another player in his position. However because he’s not as good defensively as he is offensively by comparison (he’s still very good), the English mindset is ‘oh a right backs top attributes needs to be defending’. It’s important but it’s not the overriding factor. TAA is a game winner, he can produce a bit of magic which could change a game against the top terms. Can Reece James or Walker say the same? Roberto Carlos was world class full back not because of his defensive work but because he could by one piece of skill provide an assist or goal which others couldn’t.
