Posted this in the Afcon thread, think he could do a job for us this season:

He did have a role helping to close out games in the previous season, and did it well in the main. Given our issues this season, he might still have an important contribution to play and be better suited to that role than Soumare.

Will never get a chance under Rodgers. Brendon is a stubborn arrogant individual that will never go back on a decision even if he knows he was wrong. Which is one of the reasons I want him out!

Mendy is another example of Rodgers stubbornness and extreme egotistical ways. It's another example of his vilification of squad players who do a tidy job, like praet, and him. I feel even worse for mendy because he was very very solid. Deserved a spot in the squad. Hell id keep him around, but Rodgers doesn't like to admit he's wrong. Same thing with kelechi, he doesn't play our top player because of who knows what. Because he's an arrogant little man. He'd be a miles better manager if he weren't. Shame for us. Mendy us a solid backup and deserves time. Better as a cdm than hamza

I’ve said a few times, miles better than he gets credit for. Was really good at the start of last season, particularly against City. I’ve never understood why he’s not involved

He did a great job when we were struggling, seemed to be very tidy. But…. Can anyone ever remember a game where he’s had a massive impact? He’s never scored for us, assists haven’t really been there. He’s always seemed to me that he’s nearly always available to take the ball and make a simple pass but that’s about it.

If Soumare cost us £30 mil. Mendy should have worth fortune then.

We are half way through the football season and still trying to figure out why we have spent awful lot of money for the players like Soumare, Lookman and Vestergard when we already have better players in our roster.

Papy has suffered in the PL because of his stature - teams realised that they can press him physically when he’s isolated as our CDM and we’re playing out from the back . From recollection, he has been less exposed in this regard with a back three than a two.

as others have said he’s great at being available and recycling in addition to breaking play up.

having him the PL squad together with wes’ return will also help Bouba settle.

His whole game is get the ball and give it to someone else. Was brought in as the Kante replacement but then missed most of his first season through injury before eventually N’Didi came in. Obviously not as bombastic as him or N’Golo but has still done a job on previous occasions.

What the bloody hell are you talking about? How is Mendy not making the squad an example of Rodgers egotistical ways?

It was a choice between Mendy and Hamza for the last spot and Mendy was half way out the door and Hamza fits the criteria for a home grown player in Europe - it’s not rocket science.

Preat was a different story, he didn’t want to be a bench player and fair play to him - but when every is fit, he’s not in our best 11.

Also Iheanacho is not our top man, he is a decent player but anyway you look at it, our third choice striker.

Looks like he's lost weight.

With wilf and hamza able to fill in at centre half he's a solid option in the midfield. He's the best holding midfielder we've got apart from wilf.

Thought he was really poor second half of last season, especially as a lone DM playing 4 at the back with some absolute shockers against Everton, Leeds and Spurs at home.  Not good enough.

Not an assist but he made a great turn against man city to set up a goal, think it was a pre pre assist (if that's a thing). He's never going to set the world alight but he's steady.

He was not alone there though was he? He was excellent at the start of the season, see Man City and Arsenal away for reference.

Lookman is on loan and has done quite well so far when you compare to the dross we signed before on the right like Under & Ghezzal.

For the Prem squad it was actually between Mendy and Benkovic for the last place in the squad

At the time it made sense to include Benkovic over him due to our issues with centre backs at the times and he had been playing during pre-season - what happened after that with Benkovic we aren’t privy to - and Mendy was at that point behind Ndidi, Soumare, Hamza, and had been looking at moves away - it made sense not to include Mendy in the squad

If don't sign a player of A list age today, will Mendy replace Benkovic in the squad?

Yeah I expect Mendy will be included in the Prem squad after today unless we sign a player who was born before 2000
