Set pieces

Ndidi’s return will help too.

..was strange to listen to Rodgers in his post match interview!!!

He believes when the defenders come back it will resolve itself.  When describing the goal we conceded he was explaining why they scored as Mcburnie was matched up with Tielemans....he just did not pick up the futility of Zonal Marking, it was embarrassing to listen to.

If you are Mcburnie you go to where the smallest defender is and then you have the key to the door....!!!

I am in no doubt that most of the problem lies with Kasper, he just does not come out to catch the ball & command his penalty area. Bear in mind that he can use his hands which gives him a massive advantage over even the tallest of players. This problem has been ongoing for years & I think it spreads uncertainty & confusion when we are defending.

As for when we get an offensive set piece the only suggestion I can offer is to sign James Ward-Prowse!

Kasper’s biggest weakness, no question. And that includes his erratic distribution.

Corners defensively are set up wrong. Rodgers has the big men zonal and smaller players man marking. That should be the other way around surely?

I know commentary said Youri didn't even bother jumping but what's the point when he's up against McBurnie ffs.

Have no idea how we have become so bad at set pieces at both ends of the pitch. We were never really a threat but we still got the odd goal, but when our crosses either drift all the way or barely beat the first man (cough, Maddison). And more worryingly, we are breached more often than ever defensively from corners.

The stats do not like. We absolutely stink to high heaven with set pieces, and the sooner we get some defensive cover back with Ndidi, Soyuncu and Castagne, the better.

Zonal makes sense when you’re a relatively short team like us, man to man creates more pronounced mismatches but it should have been changed after the first few set pieces.

If went totally man to man it’d probably have been worse because Berge, McBurnie and their three CBs are taller than our three CBs and other outfielders.

Employing a specialist or devoting much more time to training set pieces could add more goals to our game than probably any one individual signing so it makes sense to sharpen up on them. We most likely won’t though

My guess is it's because the job of the man markers is basically to impede the runners and act as blockers to stop them getting a clean run at the ball, whereas it's the job of the players in the zones to attack the ball when it comes into a dangerous area

Best set piece in about 6 games was from Fuchs. Whipped with pace into the right area. Their keeper did what he had to and went for it, which he then dropped and we nearly scored.

We get one from a little closer on the right and Madison floats it in the air, nowhere near anyone but the keeper. Huge difference in quality. Why doesn’t albrighton take set pieces when he’s on?!

im fine with Madison going for goal from them but his crossing is so bad.

He clipped in his first corner of the day and I couldn’t believe how bad it was. Even the best header of the ball would have struggled to do anything with that.

I think he’s rattled himself. It’s not quality, I just think he’s setting up knowing how many he’s messed up and he can’t clear his head now.

I think we had issues with set pieces during the first few weeks of the title winning campaign. But Ranieri and the coaching staff solved it. Some of it comes from leadership on the pitch and strong comms to organise - when you listen to Simpson as a pundit, what comes through was how the back four constantly communicated with each other and Morgan had such a key role.

I get why Rodgers is citing the injury challenges but he's changed the formation to suit the players available, so surely he should be as adaptable on set pieces rather than sticking to the same system that means we're vulnerable currently?

I wonder if the reason we are so bad at them defensively is because we are so bad at them offensively?! IE in training we can’t practice defending them properly because Maddison never clears the first man in training ! lol

It’s honestly becoming a joke now at both ends.

You know it's bad when @StriderHiryu is on the hyperbole train.

I wonder whether we would be a better team with Nick Pope in goal. I like Kasper but I feel like his kicking and command of the penalty box is causing us more problems than ever

We are quite literally the worst team in the league at defending set pieces and the joint worst at scoring them, IE haven't scored any. Brighton and Fulham haven't played in Europe either, we could easily add another 5 games to that attacking statistic!

Well, just think how good it'll be when it gets sorted and all our players are fit :)

Put mcburnie off/prevent him from getting a clean header?

Pretty basic stuff.

I hope so!

Believe it or not, we have already conceded the same amount of goals from set pieces this season as we did for the entirety of last season.

Given the decimation at the back, that can hardly be considered a surprise. And we STILL have 21 points and are still in Europe. So silver linings etc.

I agree, you literally never see him deliver a decent corner.
