I'll still say it to whoever listens. If he hadn't got injured against Southampton he'd have been the one who went the route Drinkwater did (England, big transfer etc) and might not have cocked it up in the way he has since.

I agree

Thank you Matty, remember the injury in 14/15 and being really gutted. You didnt look out of place next to Esteban. We know what you're capable of.

(these 3 bits of news have knocked the stuffing out of me even though it was obvious, makes last weekend even more special) - what a way to go out.

I did like him when he first joined, good footballer, but sadly injuries got the better of him.

Hopefully he moves on to play regular. I'm sure Cov will want him to stay.

A career wrecked by injuries, however when he was on song and un-injured, played a pivotal role in getting us back to the Premier League.

All the best for the future.

Fully agree.
I feel some fans don’t actually appreciate how good he was and could have been if it wasn’t for injuries.

Glad he’s had a full season under him and wish him all the best!

I go out for ten minutes. Come back and half the club have retired! Jeez! So sorry Matty’s injuries ruined his latter years with us, but we can never forget the role he played in getting us back into the top flight. Will always wish him well for that alone. Seems like a top guy and hope he has some years still ahead of him on the pitch.

Was such a good player for us and would have gone on to win England caps had he not been ravaged by injury. Hope he gets another 5/6 years playing injury free and hope to see him staring for someone in the premier league one day.

Very talented, very underrated, always preferred him over Drinkwater.

Shame injuries wrecked his career with us.

Barnsley and Coventry fans love him though, so it has shown he’s still got the class to play in the Championship.

I’d also like to add how proud I am of the club for standing by him during the most difficult times, to have abandoned him would have been heartless and could have been catastrophic for the lad, and goes to show the heart and soul we have.

I echo this sentiments. Read all too well about the mental health struggles that players experience having been discarded onto the scrap heap.

So glad our club saw better to look after the lad.

Hope he has a good career. A pivotal part of the Championship title season and so unfortunate to be injured severely before the title winning campaign.

Just glad he's playing football at a decent level and getting positive reviews. Wish him a great future.

Many on here were highly critical of the club for giving him a new 4 year contract in 2017, instead of just releasing him. I was one of those critics. But it looking back, I feel sorry for him and I hope he's financially stable now. Maybe a 2 year contract would been sufficient but nonetheless, good luck to him.
