Didn’t we beat Germany as well?

Yes and you have to win that to get a quarter and semi so it's important but in comparison to the table of achievements I'm saying other managers didn't get such a soft opponent at that later stage. I was impressed that we beat Germany, they've had a hoodoo over us but they're not a classic Germany side.

Gutted but proud of them. Looking forward to the world Cup and hopefully they can use this massive disappointment as a learning experience and battle on. Well done England!

Making my night shift go a bit quicker too! 😊

BTW France lost at home to Portugal in Euro 2016. Two years later they won the World Cup.

Hopefully we will see even more good English players develop by then.

Still smashed Portugal, Spain failed to top their group and Netherlands were beaten. The draw wasn’t soft, it is just the others weren’t good enough

It is a very young England team, with some quality players… probably the best in terms of depth we have had in years

My 12 year old lad said to me, “why can’t we take penalties”

What I felt like saying was “**** off you little shit, where were you in 1990 v Germany, 1996 against the ****ing Germans again and 2000 whenever it was when the ****ing Portuguese done us. All you’ve ever known is Leicester winning stuff and England getting to semis and finals, clean your teeth and get to ****ing bed”. lol

What I actually said was, “pressure and expectation weighs heavy. Some deal with it better than others. Preparation is always key, but never a guarantee”. lol

Lost on penalties now in 90,96,98,2004,2006,2012 and 2021

portugal twice, Germany twice, argentina and Italy twice.

How does a nation go about producing quality managers? It's crazy that a small country like Netherlands have had better top level coaches than England.

Better education and more opportunities.

In 2017, Spain boasted a whopping 15,089 coaches who held either the Uefa Pro or Uefa A qualification, compared to the 1,796 qualified coaches in England.

4 English PL managers, Serie A 14 Italian Managers, La Liga 16 Spanish Managers, Bundesliga 9 German Managers , Ligue 1 14 French Managers

I feel like Bellingham with another season and a half under his belt going into next year is going to be a different animal and may mean for a more progressive midfield. Hope Saka doesn’t go within himself and we all get behind him. We could also see a Barnes or JJ at the World Cup. I fear Maddison wouldn’t add much even if he’s on form and at a ‘big 6’ club by then.

Anyway, Leicester lads are back in training tomorrow, we’re having a good window so far and squad is looking unscathed from the Euros. Big season for us !

If youre english and not heart broken, youre not a football fan.

I’m English but certainly not heart broken. I was in euro 96, and France 98, as on both occasions we lost in game where we were the better team. Euro 96 we should have won that competition, some would argue the same with Italia 90.

last night, we didn’t deserve to win hence why I don’t feel heartbroken.

Other than the first 30 minutes and parts of ET, we were dominated. it was only a matter of time until they scored, and they did. We were too Slow to change formation, almost like we were just trying to manage the game out. But their chance were becoming too clear cut as the game went on.

As others have said, asking players that have just gone on to take penalty kicks is mind boggling. Rashford looked 100% shit scared when he was bought on, knowing full well he’s be taking a penalty, so to Grealish (yes I’m aware he didn’t take).

There is no doubt Southgate is a top guy, and a brilliant man manager. There is no doubt tactically and defensively we are harder to break down, and we have matured in game management.

but…

On paper we had one of (if not) the best squad of players, playing at home, against an opponent that had  their best player injured.

There have been lots of moments where I’ve questioned Southgate decisions during this tournament, but we have managed to win. Things like sitting back and soaking up pressure, owing to only starting with 3 attacking players across the strikers and midfielders. I have questioned the timing of subs, seeing our players knackered with late subs, whereas other teams freshen up earlier. But it’s hard to argue if we win.

But last night I think it caught up with us, that it’s an opportunity that doesn’t come round too often, missed.

Come on, that was one of the weakest Germany teams in decades. Especially with a washed up manager on his way out.

Southgate shat the bed and thought he could hold on that 1 goal advantage for 85 minutes. Let's not even talk about the penalty takers. I've never seen a team getting such easy runs like the WC 2018 and this tournament which was basically played at home. England made it to the finals despite Southgate not because of him. He's a chancer, a negative manager and will squander one of the best generations England ever had.

Who cares whether we deserved to win? Do you not celebrate a Leicester win if we're not the better team?

These points some would say are debatable, but I have to agree.

winning tournaments are not easy, there are spells in games where your opponents play better, and to win a tournament takes some luck.

But teams that win it (with the odd exception) play the kind of free flowing football that Italy have played throughout, and for large parts last night. A bit like Liverpool last season and Man City this season. They own teams!

other than the game against Ukraine (who are not a top team), I haven’t seen that from England. Instead there is some very good game management, but against better opposition I thought we’d get caught out. Germany had some clear cut chances when we played them, that on another day they would have taken.

since before WC 2018, we have lost or drawn to most of the top European nations we have played and looked inferior, also we have looked toothless in attack in most of the games. The exception being Spain away first half nations league (though they bosses the second half)

southgate spoke about wanting to play “champagne football”, I don’t know why we don’t with the attacking players we have, and why sterling is the only fast attacker across the  striker and midfield department.

Of course…

id have celebrated last night had we won on penalties, but owned that we were not the better side.

not sure the point your making?

It's been great, exceeded my expectations, but comparisons with previous generations are unfair considering the changes in opposition too. Sides like Italy, France, Brazil were very strong when our "golden generation" were competing.

Sat here trying to do a 50 page document and all I can think about is Southgate being so negative.
