Christmas Dinner - Scheduled for the 25th December

Recommended Posts

Okay, it’s our turn to cook this year.

12 of us in total of various ages.

What is everyone having on their Christmas dinner menu? I need some inspiration.

I’m thinking:

Soup or Prawn Cocktail starter.

Turkey

Roast Potatoes

Stuffing - Sage / Onion and Sausage

Roast Parsnips

Pigs in blankets

Turkey Gravey

Cranberry Sauce

Carrots
Brussel sprouts

Peas

Christmas Pudding

Trifle

Ice Cream

Meringue

Cheese Board

Various wines!

I’m undecided on Yorkshire Puddings

Never,Never be undecided on Yorkies..they are Pillows for the Turkey & Run Off Wells for the Gravy....Not forgetting Baskets for the veggy-bouquettes,

and the Sponges to Wipe around the Plate at the end.

If any left over...nice with treacle the next day..

Why dient you know...!!  The yorkie represents Santas-sleigh that carries all treasures, and Dogs in blankets are Really Rudolph & friends...

Very similar to you, but without any peas and definitely with yorkshire puddings! We also have cauliflower cheese.

I also do a gammon joint, soaked overnight in cider, then covered in cloves and baked in the oven.

I make my stuffing using a shop bought packet of chestnut and cranberry stuffing mix, and mix it with a packet of sausage meat, a packet of streaky bacon chopped up, and a chopped onion. In fact I make two, and we have the second one on boxing day with the left over turkey and gammon in bake at home bread rolls or baguettes with loads of cranberry sauce.

First of all good luck and hope it all goes well.

Personally I would stick to something really simple and easy as a starter that can be prepared in advance. People don't need a huge starter as they're going to get loads for the main course. I've done blinis with smoked salmon and a small amount of cream cheese in the past.

For the mains I wouldn't serve Yorkshires with turkey. There's more than enough "heavy" veg to accompany your turkey.

I'd definitely add a bread sauce to your list which can be largely prepared in advance.

Carrots can be a bit boring so as your roasting stuff anyway I'd roast them with butter and toasted cumin seeds.

The sprouts I'd cook with pancetta and chestnuts, all good xmassy things!

pigs in blankets are always popular but for a twist on this I'd recommend date, goat's cheese and bacon devils with rosemary sticks.

For something a bit out there braised red  cabbage with sweet blackberries is a great combination of flavours.

You've covered all the main bases with your deserts though if you're making Christmas pudding it should have been made by now.

For alternatives you could try

mincemeat frangipane tart

or for something a bit fresher to the pallette

poached pears with bitter chocolate moose. Tastes great and looks impressive too!

Don't live in a mansion!

But we've recently had a new kitchen and I was insistent on having two dishwashers!!  :yahoo:

Pretty much the whole shebang. Bar peas 🤨 and never a starter! How do people manage that?! Yorkies and cauli cheese essential. I have THE best CC recipie ever. I'll try and dig it out. Also do stuffing baubles which are a nice touch.

I'm all ears for a top tier turkey recipie though! It's always a bit average for me.

If you start with the concept that turkey is completely tasteless, you’ll be fine.

Bacon, stuffing, add-ons, gravy, etc will all help make it a more interesting experience!

I'm a big Yorkshire pud fan but not with Xmas dinner.

By the time you've put all the turkey, spuds, veg, trimmings etc. on the plate, I find there's just no room left for Yorkies.

Could buy bigger plates I guess....

I was thinking the same!  No way I am comprising my Christmas dinner (and evening buffet) for a starter- far better to start it on an empty stomach.

Slap Chinese five spices on the turkey- gives it a bit of a kick!

Swan!? Wtf man! :nono:

Also is not having yorkies ever an option?

Can't believe you and others took this seriously.

Also, yorkies depends on their quality. Large, crispy, lightly browned and just the right amount of softness underneath. Not easy to achieve. Well made batter and a really hot oven, I believe is the key.
