When I was actively running (3/4 times a week), which was up until the middle of last year, I mainly ran 10K and above. 5K was never really a distance I ran. I now only run once or twice a week and have increased weight training.

The best time I did 5K in was for a work challenge and it was 22:58. However, I ran just over 5K yesterday (albeit after a heavy morning leg session at the gym) and clocked in at around 29 minutes!!!

My 10K PB was 44:57 (probably around my peak running fitness). So I could possibly push to crack the 22 minute mark if I pushed myself for it and trained but anything below is pretty far away from me.

Always wanted to do a ParkRun but never got round to it.

Started doing Parkrun in 2017 - improved my time every week for the first 7/8 weeks or so up to around 28 mins, then had loads of niggles and started to slip back. Did a 10k later that year (about 1.10 I think) then never ran since. Cycling to work is my preference now, much easier on my joints.

Just under 30 mins probably.

For most of my life I've been pretty fit and very slim until recently, but I've always absolutely fvcking HATED running. Ever since I can remember.

I find it mind-numbingly boring, and as someone who's 6'4+ I don't really run, I more lurch along. My knees and hips start hurting within minutes, so I've never really bothered. Even playing football I'd just stand at the back being tall.

HIIT is the king of exercise.

My PB is 16 minutes something.

That's some going is that :appl:

Just worked out that the Marathon world record holder averages about 14 minutes per 5km - over 42 kms

Can't get my head around that kinda speed

Incredible the sectional times them marathon lads do.  I remember running in a relay marathon alongside the main event many many years ago. I think there was 10 or 12 in the team and there were varying distance legs from like a mile an half up to 4mile. Anyway the men’s winner led us all the way and we didn’t see him and our team finished just behind the women’s winner, which considering we were all fit lads who played lots of sport was amazing. I’d assumed up and till then that marathon runners merely jogged lol

Now 😞???  I am going to get running again…. My head and body miss it a lot !  I had such a strong habit for 7 years…. It’s been around 5 months since my last plod…. I’m just worried about keeling over if I go out again soon!

26.53 according to Strava, though imagine it would have been quicker when I somehow managed a 47 min 10k nine years ago.

Trying to pace myself at the moment as I need to get/stay in shape for my wedding and don't want any more injuries setting me back, so usually do between 28 and 30.

Looks like this thread did the trick motivating me. I've just gone and posted 26.19.

This pretty much sums my opinion on running.

I detest it but I’m doing it to shed the pounds. I’m slowly building my time back up! My target is 25 minutes. My time has definitely got better since I’ve dropped from 18 stone in Jan to 15 stone now.

I started doing parkrun 10 years ago as a fairly overweight 40 something smoker.  I had a ciggie after the first two or three times I ran it lol  but I soon jacked the cigs in.

It was always a struggle to do sub 30 and if I pushed it, I would injure myself.

2018/19 I joined a gym and lost quite a bit of weight, did a half-marathon and managed a 26:05 parkrun pb on a flat course.

Then through lockdown I put a bit of weight back on as the gyms were shut and then I was uncomfortable with going back in straight after re-opening, so I've only just started going back to the gym.

Now in my early 50s, I went to parkrun last month for the first time since Covid.

36m  lol  (It IS really hilly  )

Maybe going to have do a bit more in the gym...

Obviously it depends on terrain and what you are training for. If the object is to go longer and train for a marathon or half, focus on the distance over speed.

27 minutes approximately on my last run.

I did a 5k a couple of months ago at a little over 25 minutes which wasn't too bad seeing as I'm 58 now. I must get back into it - use it or lose it.

My PB was 14 minutes 8 seconds which I did in Holland in 1990. I can't believe it's 32 years ago. Where did those years go?

I remember sitting-in for the first 10½ laps then hitting the front with two laps to go. Did 1:56 for the last 800m.

Anyway, enough of the old reminiscing :)

Holy Christ that's Quick! when you consider Mo Farah qualified for the world championships with a time of 14:00 minutes for the 5k!

Were you a pro-athlete?

I was as pro as you could be back then whilst doing a 40 hour a week job and training at least twice a day and running anything between 70 and 100 miles a week.

There was no money in it at that point. Occasionally I'd get my expenses covered if it was an invitational race but that was it.

The depth in that event in 1990 was so great that my PB might only just have scraped me into the top 100 in the UK that year.

Leicestershire had a couple of real quick guys around that period, Jack Buckner (13:10) and Craig Mochrie (13:26)

As for Mo Farah, he's practically jogging to do 14 minutes. When the top guys are 'on it', their speed and endurance is really unbelievable.

I thought this was another 80s away day thread

It has been a while but i ran several Km most weekdays for 8 months and it was so addictive. I felt great generally too. Sodding ice and snow ruined it all though

Always ran against the clock too, gave me purpose and never got bored focusing on the next marker.

Unfortuantly I swapped the sony walkman and Depeche Mode tape for a bin bag of Marijuanna, otherwise you could have had them.

A good audio running rhythm, focus on long strides and choose dog free routes and your time will reduce virtually every run.

Grasshopper also remembers the regular run to work and intercepting the same embarrassed girl in my undyless cotton joggers.......... but that bit is optional
