Teams don't remove vital players from key games on the off chance they might move in a few weeks' time. If a deal had been agreed to sell Maddison, we'd already know about it. The reason we haven't heard about it is because there's no way the club is going to sell Maddison in the middle of a relegation battle. It's simply not going to happen. They're actually trying to persuade him to sign a new contract, although that seems a bit of a long shot at the moment. Maddison may well end up leaving in the summer, which will create a massive hole for us to fill. But not until then.

FoxesWalk Posted 6 January 2023 Posted 6 January 2023 We shouldn’t risk a single player who we will want to rely on in the league, imo. Not worth the injury risk, let them rest. 3

davieG Posted 6 January 2023 Posted 6 January 2023 https://www.leicestermercury.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/seven-leicester-city-youngsters-gillingham-8002596 Seven Leicester City youngsters in Gillingham contention with Newcastle on Brendan Rodgers' mind Brendan Rodgers does not want to put senior players at risk of injury this weekend with a Carabao Cup quarter-final against Newcastle taking place four days later ByJordan Blackwell 14:41, 6 JAN 2023UPDATED14:52, 6 JAN 2023 Brendan Rodgers could turn to a cohort of talents from Leicester City’s development squad this weekend to avoid putting senior players at risk of injury. The City boss has had seven young players in training this week and they may get their chance to feature at Gillingham in the FA Cup third round on Saturday. City may have as many as nine players out with injury, and with a Carabao Cup quarter-final at Newcastle following four days later, Rodgers does not want to lose any more. This time last year, City were forced to call up young players for their tie at home to Watford, with 17 players ruled out through injury, illness, or Africa Cup of Nations commitments. In a 4-1 win, Lewis Brunt, Kasey McAteer, Wanya Marcal-Madivadua, and Will Alves all featured. Brunt and McAteer are most likely to feature at Gillingham, having been around Rodgers’ squad over the past few weeks, both taking a spot on the bench against Fulham. Sammy Braybrooke, who made his senior debut in November, is back in training after a minor knock and is in contention to feature. Right-back Joe Wormleighton, recently signed left-back Deniche Hill, midfielder Brandon Cover, and forward Tawanda Maswanhise have also been training with the senior squad. “We’ll pick a team we believe can win the game,” Rodgers said. “We have to bear in mind that we have a game on Tuesday night as well, and then a game on Saturday (against Nottingham Forest). “We’ll always put out a team that is there to win the game. We’ll assess the guys, so that we’re not risking them to get any more injuries. The team we put out will be strong. “I don’t think so much about the age of players. I tend to think more if they have the mentality to cope and the ability to play in the game. I’ve shown throughout my career that age is irrelevant. “If I’ve felt the player is at the desired level and he can cope, then I would put them in. That’s even if they’re not finished articles, which a lot of them won’t be when they’re young. I would have no problem. “You can’t always play them when we’re 3-0 up at home and everyone’s with them. You need to find out if the players have the mentality to cope because ultimately that’s what you're looking for. You’d like to think you could play some of the young players who have been in and around us and that they can go and perform.” City’s lack of available full-backs makes McAteer in particular an option. The 21-year-old came through the ranks as a winger or attacking midfielder, but has been playing more regularly as a wing-back for City’s development squad over the past year. In a behind-closed-doors friendly against Troyes, he impressed at right-back, and that earned him a run-out at left-back off the bench at MK Dons. That’s now considered his best position, and so he may replace Timothy Castagne or Luke Thomas at Priestfield. “I think he feels that’s his best position,” Rodgers said. "When I came in here, I saw him play as a number eight in midfield, I was impressed with him. He was a young player who was out for a long time injured when he was about 17, but I liked his game and he’s grown in stature. “I’d have liked him to have had a loan period. He went out and didn’t play so much at Forest Green. But that experience would have helped him. “He’s got tools. He’s not super young. He is 21, not 17, which I would consider young. But sometimes players need an opportunity. I’ve liked him in training. “Lewis Brunt as well, he’s one who is a talent. They’ve just got to turn it into a working talent. If I feel that they can cope and we can put them in, it will be a great opportunity for them. “In terms of position, either side, he (McAteer) has played as a wing-back, he’s played as a full-back. He feels very comfortable in both of those positions, as opposed to being a midfield player now.” 1

David Hankey Posted 6 January 2023 Posted 6 January 2023 This will be the chance for some of our youngsters to step up and let us see what they are made of. If we're predicting, I'll go for 0-3.

Sunbury Fox Posted 6 January 2023 Posted 6 January 2023 (edited) They might be bottom of the league but this will be much harder than the MK game, I think. MK was basically a home game, given the number of tickets they gave us, plus MK stadium is basically a PL stadium and their fans are pretty passive. By contrast, Gillingham is a classic lower league stadium and their fans will be raucous - they're basically Millwall-lite. This is also their big game so their fans and players will be well up for it live on the BBC. Plus they are managed by a long ball merchant and their team will no doubt be full of huge, physical players. My view is that if we go into a game like this with a bunch of kids we will lose.
