I'd love to know why Mendy never got a fair shake of the stick. From the stands he always looked the business.

He’s 5 foot something and we were conceding lots of goals from corners (is my guess)

Will always respect Amartey, PL, FA & Community Shield winner, plus rattled the whole of Chelsea that time too.

Was never the same after his injury and played out of position in an awful defence.

Mendy showed some glimpse of excitement but after a long seven years at the club we just never seen him reach full potential. So many managers managed him yet no one could get the best from him.

The club speaks!!

The silence has been deafening.

Good riddance to them all bar Cags and Mendy.

Evans can join them too.

What has Evans done to get the vitriol?

If he is to stay, Evans has to be on a modest weekly wage with good bonuses for appearances - maybe set fees for reaching 20, 30 and 40 games (not that that is likely to happen whatsoever).

Offering Evans a new contract just shows these people haven't learned a damn thing. His career is done, he is forever injured and his interviews following relegation were an absolute disgrace, showed he doesn't give a damn about the club, he's got to be one of the worst captains we've ever had.

I think we did see the best of him and that was the problem.

A trier but came up short on quality.

We don't know what's happening on the manager front or with John Terry, but I can see a player/coach role as a good move for both Evans and the club.

Lets hope that's what this is.

Or maybe I'm just over-optimistic about the having competent decision makers at the club.

Yeah man, btw share with us your thoughts on "Big" Dan Amartey?

Offering a new contract for Evans is pointless.

Also, the club haven't even released a statement about players being retained in some seasons past, and definitely no spiel for those more deserving. Yet another silly little thing that is symbolic of our current state.

I’m just watching Sunderland till I die again and there seem to be SO many similarities:

- owners and fans who didn’t ever really think we’d get relegated

- so many poor players on massively inflated wages who needed to be shifted out ASAP.

- a financial spreadsheet that would make a nun swear.

- having to start pretty much from scratch in terms of building a squad.

However, there are some important differences:

- players we can likely sell on for big money

- owners who (for the moment) seem to want to continue bank-rolling the club.

- we’ve not yet appointed a new manager.

- Sunderland brought in a new Exec.. we haven’t yet.

The culling of the squad was likely and essential. If, as has been mooted, players like Amartey was on 60k per week, and Bertrand on 70k per week, Christ we’ve been overpaying for many of the players!

It’ll be interesting to see what’s what come the season opener.

my first instinct was get rid, but if he's happy to hang around on a small wage, possibly with a look towards us supporting him in a coaching role, his experience in the dressing room could be a benefit

Of all of them leaving, I'm most happy about Bertrand! Blatently had come here for a final pay day, did f all and got paid a lot of money. Just a joke really. No other job would you get paid so much for so long for literally doing nothing.

Mendy I do not blame as he's been treated like shite and to be honest would have been in my running for player of the season. Evans should also go as we need a new captain and if he stays on he'd also probably remain as captain.

I agree about Bertrand. But at the time he was seen as a replacement for Fuchs - ie one ageing left back for one not so old. As ever thought the warning signs came from friends of mine who support Saints who said he was well past it. Funny how supporters get things like this right a lot of time ahead of people who run football club recruitment.

The sad part in all this, I am not sad to see any leave, Youri and Cags should have been sold 2 years ago and I think we would have had circa £80m in the coffers. As for the others they have done nothing of any note and been handsomely rewarded for such.

Brighton have learned from our mistakes, buying low and selling high and coining it in on cucurella, trossard and it looks like Caicedo. We need to make sure we put the people and systems back in place to build back stronger.

Yeah I'll miss him being not discernably very good at anything, a crying shame

His support of his homophobe mate is absolutely unwavering, lad's very good at being a twat.

I've no cult like devotion to him. I just think he's been better a lot of the time than his competition and doesn't seem to have had a fair run of games. When he has played consistently I think he's done enough to stay in the team and he's been dropped.

Whatever, he's gone. Farewell sweet Prince.
