Who else was told to run off an ACL last season? Was it JJ?

JJ was Achilles last season wasn't he?

I think it was actually Ricardo that was told to run it off?

The players have an element of responsibility though surely.

Hardly like we can do a scan mid game, so go by a lot of what the player says/does.

Look at Barnes at the weekend, he pulled up and straight away knew he couldn’t continue, looks like he’s out for months with a foot injury.

I’d love to see Nelson but gonna throw out an alternative in Hamza!

He is quicker than JJ and thought had a good game against Norwich.

I’d like to see Hamza play there, probably on the right though and swap Faes over to the left. Then Ricardo plays his inverted role from the left

So unfortunate for Doyle.

Ricardo, Justin and Hamza should be good enough but obvious injury history worries on the first two.

Could Albrighton fill in as 4th choice?

Bertrand has no club. Just saying. If Enzo can rebuild Vesty, could he rebuild Bertrand into Carlos Alberto?

He's 19. It's unlikely he was going to have a rich history of injuries.

He’d have played 5-6 seasons or what have you including at academy level, possibly more.

Ben Nelson is right footed as well I think? Otherwise he could have been a capable deputy

Every club will pick up injuries. In theory we should be the best placed to adapt. There won't be a perfect replacement as Doyle is first choice, but it's a problem we should be able to solve.

We have a huge potential issue at full back / inverted full back though. The two obvious candidates (Justin and Ricardo) have both had at least 1 serious injury each in the last 3 seasons (4 for Ricardo).

It would be of no surprise if they succumb again this year, even one of them doing so is a nightmare for us. Fingers crossed they don't, but both have to be managed extremely carefully and I'd be using Hamza, Albrighton, Coady and Nelson in varying roles against lesser opposition in the league to ease the burden.

Didn’t VK come out & say the reason he left is because he didn’t want to play in the 3, or wasn’t suited? Might be wrong on this one.

Either way, I think Doyle will be a huge miss because of the natural left foot, but we have more than enough fire power around the squad to cope.

Injuries like this seem to be happening more frequently in the game, maybe due to the fast pace & high intensity, but more than confident it won’t affect our current form!

Pep at Man City often had to make do and mend - playing midfielders at LB etc, so we will see if Enzo does similar. I can see him having Hamza as that player in this system.

hamza who played inverted RB at norwic( last week ?

Fatawu 👀?

Not disciplined enough.  Our left back effectively becomes the right side of a three - that’s not fatawu!

Four ways Leicester City can solve Enzo Maresca's newest problem including wildcard option
Callum Doyle is set to be missing for a little while with a knee injury and with the January transfer window still three months away, Maresca has to look inside the club for a solution

As Enzo Maresca points out, “it’s so long” until the January transfer window opens, and so Leicester City cannot think about solving Callum Doyle’s absence with a new arrival.

Although the exact issue is still to be determined, the Manchester City loanee is set to be on the sidelines for a little while with his knee injury, and so Maresca has to look internally for solutions. It’s not a simple job, with no other left-footed defenders available in the senior squad.

Maresca had identified Victor Kristiansen as a potential deputy to Doyle, but the young Dane did not want to stick around and learn to be a makeshift centre-back. He is currently enjoying himself as a more traditional left-back on loan at Bologna.

So City need to find a different solution to replace the man who was giving them solutions. Asked if Doyle’s injury could keep him out long enough for a January transfer to be targeted, Maresca said: “Oh, it’s so long (away). The only thing I can say is that it’s a big shame. With Callum there, we had some more solutions that now we don’t have.

“It’s the simple things. With his left foot, he can find solutions inside, solutions on the opposite side, solutions in behind. Now, with a right footer, we change a little bit. At the moment, the transfer window is closed, so we can’t do anything. We just need to find a solution with the players we already have here.”

So, here are four players City could turn to. Three are already in the first team, with one coming through the ranks.

James Justin

He is the obvious option as current first-choice back-up on the other side, and as a player who believes he is at his best on the left. But Maresca did not sound totally convinced Justin was the man for him, describing his performance in Doyle’s role against Bristol City as “quite good”, which is less enthusiastic than he has been about his showings on the other side.

What Justin would bring is athleticism and a greater attacking instinct, the England international keen to carry the ball into forward areas. But in terms of passing, he won’t be able to provide what Doyle does.

Wout Faes

Another option would be to switch Faes from the right to the left. Last season, he usually played on the left side of the two City centre-backs, and so it’s not a position in which he lacks experience.

Maresca clearly likes the Belgian enough for him to have been a regular in his side so far, and while his passing range isn’t as good as Doyle’s, it’s not too bad. That would then allow Justin to play on the right, which is where Maresca feels he is more comfortable.

Jannik Vestergaard

With Conor Coady now back, Vestergaard may not be able to hold onto his spot at the centre of the defence. However, he could be an option on the left.

He is probably the best choice in terms of replicating Doyle’s passing range, but there would be concerns over his mobility. When in the middle, he is protected on both sides, but on the left, he would be more exposed, and would have to do more chasing back.

Tom Wilson-Brown

So how about a wildcard? Eighteen-year-old Wilson-Brown has been training with City’s first team under Maresca and has been a regular for their Under-21s. Importantly, he is left-footed.

He’s got height, so physicality shouldn’t be a problem, and in previous friendlies alongside the first team, he’s not looked out of place. Plus, this season has shown that lads from the academy with little experience can look at home in Maresca’s set-up, as Kasey McAteer has done.

It would be a risk, but potentially one that pays off if Wilson-Brown’s left-footedness allows him to play the passes Doyle can, and that others in the first team can’t.
