Was debating this the other day but I finally think we found q bigger football achievement that us winning the league in 2016. Leverkusen could go unbeaten, win the DFP Pokal and Europa League. That is definitely a better achievement. Bear in mind, Leverkusen had never won the German title in their history so they're not this huge club that got rejuvenated. It's insane for a club their size to go the league season unbeaten and win a treble.

Their achievement is great, no doubt about it.

Absolutely not. Leverkusen are an established Bundesliga side, they haven't been relegated in 40 years, and haven't finished lower than 6th since 2018. 

 

It would be like Spurs winning it, the butt of the joke for so long but they had the foundations all along.

Juggling all 3 and not being defeated all season would be an insane achievement to be fair. Next year is gonna suck for them as you can only go down from that point.

 

Good luck convincing 99% of people on a Leicester board that 15/16 wasn't the greatest achievement in the history of mankind though

 

They're both fantastic achievements but they're also different, trying to measure them is ultimately futile. They're both going to go down as legendary seasons in football.

Leverkusen spent more money on established Champions League player, Granit Xhaka, than we did on the whole 15/16 squad. 

 

That's without looking at the fact they have a squad full of German, Czech, Brazilian, Nigerian, Spanish, Dutch, Argentine and Croatian internationals.

The responses show the people get emotional over this  . They're both great achievements as you said, but to go unbeaten and win the treble is insane. This isn't Dortmund or Schalke or Hamburg or Monchengladbach, those are big clubs with history of winning domestically and in Europe. Leverkusen is a mid sized regional club.

You're incorrect I'm afraid.

 

They might never have won the title but they're not minnows, they have the 4th highest wage spend in Germany. In the last 15 seasons, they have failed to qualify for Europe once. It's a phenomenal achievement but it simply isn't comparable to what we did given both respective starting points and divisions.

I'm not emotional, it's just objectively wrong. 

 

Leverkusen aren't a "mid sized regional club", they've been a consistent top 6 force in the Bundesliga and a regular presence in European competition for a couple of decades. 

 

They've frequently had squads padded out with some exceptional international players, particularly German ones, and produce some fantastic local talent through their own ranks. 

 

They've been comparable to like, idk, Tottenham over the last decade in Germany. 

 

They're also playing in a league that has far, far less money in it overall and closing the gap from the bottom to the top is a lot more frequent, hence how clubs like Stuttgart can recover from recent yoyo club status to putting together an extremely solid squad to make a genuine attack on the top four this year. 

 

Stories like this are a lot more common in the Bundesliga. Everybody gets fixated on Bayern winning every year and doesn't really pay attention to what's happening in the rest of German football where finances and the status of clubs is in much, much bigger flux than in England. I mean you mention Schalke and Hamburg but neither are even in the top flight now and Schalke are closer to 3 Liga than they are the Bundesliga. Monchengladbach are 13th in the top flight. 

 

With the obvious exception of Dortmund, none of the clubs you just named have been as competitive in Germany as Leverkusen for a few years now. 

 

And none of this is to take away from what Xabi Alonso has done this year. It is still absolutely incredible, for context even Bayern have never had an unbeaten season. It will be a phenomenal achievement, especially if they win the Europa League too (the Pokal is a bit of a joke, they've only played one Bundesliga team in the whole run. Even the final is against a 2 Bundesliga side that are sitting 14th having won 10 league games all year.)

 

They've done it all whilst being great to watch, too. But still, suggesting it's a bigger achievement than our title win is just daft. It just isn't and the fact it isn't is further testament to how insane it is that we actually won the Premier League in our second season up with a squad that almost just got relegated and had their beloved manager forced out under controversial circumstances. 

 

Let's be honest, I don't even believe you believe it, I just suspect you're on the windup. I'd normally be ashamed to have bitten but I'm procrastinating hard right now and love a good chat about German football.

Courted by us all summer in 2015 only to reject us in favour of Leverkusen because he wanted to "fight for titles".

 

Not only do Leicester then go on to win the Premier League , writing quite literally the greatest sporting story ever told, he stays at Leverkusen for 8 years and the season AFTER he leaves them, they then go and win the Bundesliga for the first time in history and creating a similar, though extremely misguided debate about unprededented football acheivements.

 

He's the Chilean Harry Kane, bless him.

Had to go back and double check this as people seem to have read this as 

 

"Leverkusen winning the Bundesliga is better than Leicester winning the Premier League".

 

But no I was right, you did say that them going unbeaten all season whilst winning the German cup and the Europa league would arguably surpass our achievement.
