Anyone have any idea who our captain and vice captain are this year?

I would have thought Ricardo but he is often injured. Would have thought Wilf but he is on the way out. Not sure who after that.

Boss to consult on captain

Manager Marti Cifuentes and his City squad will jointly decide the club’s new captain this week as they name a successor to Jamie Vardy.

City need a new skipper after the club icon’s summer departure, and Cifuentes said he will consult the squad to ensure the right man gets the armband.

Conor Coady had been captain in pre-season before his switch to Wrexham, while Ricardo Pereira and Hamza Choudhury have also started summer friendlies as skipper, the latter doing so for the win over Fiorentina at the weekend.

Ricardo and Choudhury appear to be the standout contenders. They both wore the armband during promotion two seasons ago, while they are two of the three longest-serving City players, with only linked-away Wilfred Ndidi in the first team for a longer period of time.

Harry Winks and Ben Nelson have also worn the armband in pre-season and so may be in the running.

Asked if he’d decided on City’s captain, Cifuentes said on Sunday: “Not yet. Today was more based on that he (Choudhury) has been here for a long time. He’s one of the important players in the changing room.

“I’m going to take a decision together with the players during the week and then you’ll get news about that. I’m happy wherever we will be. I’m sure we’re going to have fantastic profiles in the team.”

Quite a tricky one with this squad. Most of the more experienced members wouldn’t get into our best 11 for me and Ricky’s never fit. Just hope it doesn’t end up being Vestergaard as that’s gonna limit the minutes Nelson or Okoli get

If Mads stays, it could be him… if not, there is no clear option. I often consider captains should play regularly and be a standout performer. I do however have a sneaky feeling it might be Ayew.. take all the setpeices and will probably play regularly. Seasoned pro. One thing we don’t get to see as fans is inside the dressing room, so it’s hard for us to say who commands the respect..

candidates:

Nelson - if Cif backs him as a starter with Okoli

Winks - if he commits to the club

Brownhill - if he signs

Ricardo - if he can be relied on fitness wise

Stolarzcyk - youth team graduate who will be first choice post Hermansen exit.

Interesting that Nelson has worn the armbands during training. Quite an indication of trust from the manager. Presumably he wore it when the team was quite inexperienced but still good to know that his name is in the hat. Could be quite the honour if he gets it due to substitutions at some point during the season.

Ricardo is definitely the obvious choice. I can see Ayew wearing it at times even though he's not the most popular member of the squad among the fanbase.

Have to agree that Choudhury would be a bad choice. If he ends up as official vice-captain or something, I'd hope it would be accompanied by a statement of contrition or some sort of indication that he's matured and wishes to make amends for his poor behaviour in the past.

Hamza should be absolutely nowhere near it.

Given the lack of other obvious candidates, the fact that he was given it on Sunday and Cifuentes’ comments about him after the game, I am expecting it to be Hamza.

Honestly, if he comes in just give it to Brownhill. This squad is such a disjointed mess that I don't think anybody bar Ricky P deserves it, or could say with a straight face that they have any authority to speak for the wider group.

My only concern with doing that would be that the last time it happened was a certain Mr. Matt Mills, and that was a disaster - but that was someone walking into a squad full of characters who had standards thanks to Pearson's first stint, who saw through his BS (as did Pearson on his return). This lot lack the marbles, or the track record to back up their words, and I don't think it particularly matters on this occasion if someone comes in from outside to lead by example.

Nelson, should be a mainstay over the next few years whether we’re up or not. Ricardo can’t stay fit long enough,  he’s nearly 32 and his deal is up next year. Choudhury was done for drunk driving his car on the wrong side of the road.

Also signals Nelson is valued and one of the shit old guard aren’t inexplicably rewarded for our inability to sell them.

I think it’s pretty unanimous it’ll be Ricardo.

Hamza will likely be vice captain, whether people like it or not.

Would imagine a leadership group would be:

Ricardo, Hamza, Nelson, Begovic & Winks.
