Alf Bentley Posted 21 May 2014 Posted 21 May 2014 A few stats on Albrighton from last season... Last season he got 4 assists in 9 starts and 10 sub appearances. That's the same as players like Adebayor, Barry, Wilshere, Milner, Routledge, Bony, Lennon, Negrado, Fernandinho, Lampard, Bolasie, Januzaj, Adam... and they all had vastly more game time than he did. He averages 1.8 key passes per game, which is only slightly less than Rooney, Navas, Lallana (1.9). The same as Henderson, johnson, Cabaye and more than Aguero, Sterling, Puncheon and most of the premier league as he was 18th in the Key passes list. His stats for accurate crosses were even better averaging 2.2 accurate crosses per game. Which is better than snodgrass, Nasri, Whittingham, Navas, Ozil, in fact almost more than everyone in the league as he was second in that list. Some good research there, Babylon. Haven't seen enough of him to form a personal judgments but like the sound of those stats. He's had a fair bit of time out over the last couple of years, hasn't he? Hopefully that's just one-off injuries or a Paul Lambert blind spot. One of his spells out was due to a throat operation, which doesn't sound like a recurring problem...
Daz93 Posted 21 May 2014 Posted 21 May 2014 Reminds me of a younger James Milner. Bags of energy, has a decent cross and on a free you can't really complain. Could do with a right footed winger, and since Lloyd is leaving, he's a great replacement. Get him in!
BrummieFOX Posted 21 May 2014 Posted 21 May 2014 Truth is we don't know whether he's a good signing or not until he's in our set up, around our team and has game time. So much can effect a players performance. It's only a few months ago since Villa's 2 head coaches were sacked for basically bullying players within the squad. This would have an awful impact on motivation and players form. He'll be coming into a squad full of confidence with a great management team. Our record in the transfer market since Nige came back has been very good so trust him.

Not being flippant but it makes you wonder. Unless I'm missing something? you would want to retain a player who the stats suggest is good stuff?

Unless I'm missing something? you would want to retain a player who the stats suggest is good stuff? Villa are a shambles. Lambert wants to bring back Bent and Hutton who he has frozen out for 18months. Madness
foxoffderby Posted 21 May 2014 Posted 21 May 2014 MA is a solid premiership player. As others have said he is like James Millner he played left right and centre midfield last season. He has had some injury problems in the past but hopefully he is over them now. The majority of Villa fans are sad to see him go a bit like the Dyer situation with us. When he first hit the scene he was touted as a future England player but injury put a stop to that. People who say he is average I don't think they've seen enough of him. The only thing average was the team he played for last season. The main reason I think Villa are losing him is that Learner is in the process of selling the club hence no new contracts were offered. I would be very happy if we signed him.
Guest Col city fan Posted 21 May 2014 Posted 21 May 2014 Villa are a shambles. Lambert wants to bring back Bent and Hutton who he has frozen out for 18months. Madness It definately suggests that. Ok, I guess we may well be profitting then from the mess they are in. That's football...
Babylon Posted 21 May 2014 Posted 21 May 2014 Then why on earth do they not want to keep hold of him. Not being flippant but it makes you wonder. Unless I'm missing something? you would want to retain a player who the stats suggest is good stuff? It sounded like they very much did going off the Sky article and comments. (http://www1.skysports.com/football/news/11095/9283639/aston-villa-boss-paul-lambert-confident-marc-albrighton-will-sign-new-deal) I think a big factor is Learner selling up leaving everything in Limbo, no wanting to commit those resources to someone who has had injuries and not had too many chances, despite showing promise. Long contracts for decent money don't sit when well trying to find a buyer.
Number 6 Posted 21 May 2014 Posted 21 May 2014 Managers and clubs do make some bad decisions. A release could even be just down to having better in that position which we may be short in. A player being released doesn't mean that he has no value to us.
LCCFox96 Posted 21 May 2014 Posted 21 May 2014 Truth is we don't know whether he's a good signing or not until he's in our set up, around our team and has game time. If there's one aspect of a transfer deal I would bet my life on NP getting right it would be this. No way he'd sign anyone that doesn't fit with the ethos of the squad. Even his worse dealings on the pitch like Futacs fit into the squad well and are popular among the players. I don't get all the negativity around this guy. He's a good, young, English player who has and could easily be again on the reader of the national team. He will also have a large sell on value having come through a good academy and due to being a real raw talent. The only drawback/potential worry is fitness and injuries but out physics do a good job with the current squad so it should be fine.

LanguedocFox Posted 21 May 2014 Posted 21 May 2014 Slightly off-subject, but in addition to Albrighton, Villa have announced that they are also releasing Nathan Delfouneso - another product of their youth set-up. I recall him being a loan player with City a couple of years ago, and wondered if he was any good?

hackneyfox Posted 21 May 2014 Posted 21 May 2014 He was on loan at co* last season, hardly set the third division alight.
CosbehFox Posted 21 May 2014 Posted 21 May 2014 Villa are a shambles. Lambert wants to bring back Bent and Hutton who he has frozen out for 18months. Madness Lambert has been forced there. Told by Lerner; play them as we are paying their wages and you are not getting a new striker this Summer (after shelling out on Kozak and Helenius last season).
crisp packet Posted 21 May 2014 Posted 21 May 2014 Then why on earth do they not want to keep hold of him. Not being flippant but it makes you wonder. Unless I'm missing something? you would want to retain a player who the stats suggest is good stuff? There chairman(Lerner) has pulled the plug on new contracts ? None been offered to anyone. Collymores tweet for me says it all .... Will prove to be a great signing ?
Finn Claw II Posted 21 May 2014 Posted 21 May 2014 Related to the wages point - we've read about the £30k cap but most bottom half of the premiership clubs spend at least £40m-£50m on player wages. While this will include all bonuses a rough split could be 10 players of £40k - £20m, 10 players of £20k - £10m 10 players on £10k - £5m, academy £1m-2m. This adds up to around £37m with the rest presumably survival bonuses etc. If I was Mark Albrighton and if I thought I was going to be one of the better players in the squad then I'd ask for £40k p/w.
Brainy Posted 21 May 2014 Posted 21 May 2014 Delfouneso has always been trash. How he so regularly got into the England u21 side I have no idea. Well I do, we had no other decent strikers
ROB-THE-BLUE Posted 21 May 2014 Posted 21 May 2014 Several Premier league teams interested according to sky sports... can see this one slipping away from us
ToeKneeHandCock Posted 21 May 2014 Posted 21 May 2014 Several Premier league teams interested according to sky sports... can see this one slipping away from us Maybe not. He may want to stay in the midlands plus we can probably offer him more game time than other clubs.
ROB-THE-BLUE Posted 21 May 2014 Posted 21 May 2014 Maybe not. He may want to stay in the midlands plus we can probably offer him more game time than other clubs. True but I can see Nige stepping away from a contract bidding war if it goes that way
Leicesterpool Posted 21 May 2014 Posted 21 May 2014 I thought they did, he just didn't want to stay at Villa. From what I've been told Albrighton wanted to up his wages and Villa refused so he decided to leave. Must be a tough decision for him a player leaving a club he supports but i can fully understand why he wanted out. I heard also West Brom were wanting him on loan back in January, but refused to join them. Also speaking of Albrighton there's a story going round involving Herd and Bent (not transfer related), anyone heard it?... story involving Bent going with Herd's girlfriend?
Fox Ulike Posted 21 May 2014 Posted 21 May 2014 A 24 year old proven Premiership player, ex England U21. For Free. No brainer. Get him in. "bang average Premiership players" is exactly what we need if we want a bang average mid-table finish next season.
