Villa (Away) - Pre Match Thread

Love the way people are moaning about Spurs being overconfident before the game last night, then in here there's predictions of big wins for us and talk of scoring for fun to boost our goal difference  lol

Of course it's okay to be confident ahead of playing a team bottom of the league but don't set yourself up for a big fall ffs.

There's a slight difference though. We're above Spurs in the table. Villa are on 11 points. They're absolute cannon fodder. If we were on 11 points I would have no qualms with fans of a team in joint top to think they would win comfortably.

Few mates of mine have said they looked a different side against Palace and for once showed some character and a want to win. Despite that, they can't score goals and we should have enough to beat them.

0-2

Riyad & Okazaki.

Albrighton has 6 assist this season, not too bad for a man on the wrong side and foot.

True, but just lately he's been well off the pace.. Along with Vardy and Mahrez!

If you can't be confident against the bottom team whilst you are joint top then when can you be?

And its not like Villa are like us last season where they will give you a game, yet keep getting undone by deflected goals or dodgy refs. They are actually shite and have players whose heart isn't in it.

With Traore out we have no worries. Just need to limit Veretout and Sinclair's influence and we shall be sorted.

Only underperformance from ourselves will mean we don't win this. And competition for places is so fierce I can't see any complacency creeping in.

In my opinion Villa are worse now than at the start of the year. They should have stuck with Sherwood, having said that I think it'll be tighter than people think

It's a business trip; I hope that the players treat it like such.

We're allowed to be confident, but we should also respect the fact that this season has clearly shown that no one is safe from an upset.

I'd start Gray instead of Albrighton.  thought he looked a bit frustrated last night.

Maybe bring him on for last 30 mins

I think Vardy will score twice in this game

I'm going for 1-2

KASPER

SIMPSON  MORGAN  HUTH  FUCHS

MAHREZ  DRINKY KANTE GRAY

OKAZAKI VARDY

Would like to see Gray get a start here but I have a feeling Ranieri wants to break him into premier league football gently seeing as he brought Dyer on instead of him towards the end of the game.

He might want to break him in slowly anyway, but the sub was in the 90th minute so wouldn't read too much into it. I imagine Dyer has a clearer understanding of what CR wants from him defensively at that stage.

Yeah that could be it to be fair, if I was Gray I wouldn't have fancied that pressure in my first league appearance haha.

Same team, take it to them and blow them away and a strategic booking for Vardy to be suspended for the cup.

Job done.

Is that correct? Would it not be the next league game? If you're right then Vardy would be daft not to get booked at Villa

Over confidence is a curse. There are NO easy games in the PL.

Whose to say Villa aren't about to do what we did last season? It's unlikely but possible.

We should beat these comfortably but only if we turn up and play our game. VARDY and Mahrez are overdue a good performance.

People seemed to think Bournmouth was going to be a straightforward 3 pts, it wasn't.

I think we will win but I doubt we'll thrash them.

Can't see Villa scoring against us but they are maybe due some luck so we should be careful.

I think we will just be too strong for them and will win a comfortable 2-0.

Hoping we play some more attacking stuff and hope to see more of Vardy and Mahrez.

They have to win their games so that should play into our hands with them pushing for goals and we can hit them on the counter

These are the games we should win if we want a shot at the top 4

Despite their win Villa are absolutely ****ing shit. Our tails will be up and we'll comfortably beat these. I think it'll be a scenario like Newcastle away where we just turn up and blow them out the water.

That's not being cocky, that's just what I think the outcome will be. They're that bad.

If Garde sticks to his guns, Villa can beat Leicester

Keeping the side mostly unchanged from the Crystal Palace win would be wise.

Fresh off of their first win in what seems like forever -- in reality, it was 157 days -- Aston Villa will try to make it two within a week Saturday when they host Leicester City. Still at the basement of the league, Villa trail their East Midlands enemies by a staggering 32 points.

Credit Claudio Ranieri and the Foxes for keeping the momentum they found in the second half of last season going for the duration of 2015. They'll be looking to carry it into the New Year as well -- and recover from a slight bump in the road -- having slipped from the top of the table to second (on goal differential) since Christmas.

Jamie Vardy returned to the Leicester lineup, playing 71 scoreless minutes on Wednesday against Tottenham Hotspur. The Foxes eked out a victory courtesy of a late Robert Huth header. Holding a dangerous Spurs team scoreless is impressive, and the Leicester midfield and defence deserve the plaudits they received.

On the Holtecast we joked that Rémi Garde should wear his same clothes without washing them on matchday out of superstition. Even if he changes his outfit, he shouldn't change his team. The players genuinely looked like winners against Crystal Palace on Tuesday, absolutely bossing the match at times. If I was Garde, I'd use this line that I always pick in Football Manager:

Villa were still lacking threats in the final third of the pitch, and it showed on the scoresheet. With a bit more end product, it could easily have been a three-goal victory. Jordan Ayew probably only did one thing wrong against Palace, and it was missing the target completely with a shot late on. He's the best player Villa have, and another match with Libor Kozák surely should result in the pair having more chemistry.

The midfield, while a little bit light on legs and reinforcements, was also excellent. Ashley Westwood, while mostly anonymous deeper on the pitch, helped dictate play. Villa played out from the back much more than we're used to seeing. Idrissa Gana and Jordan Veretout are becoming very reliable, and Carles Gil completed a tidy 94 percent of his passes.

Even though it may have been a fluky goal that secured the result, Villa deserved the points earned off the forehead of Joleon Lescott and the slick gloves of Wayne Henessey. Lescott was solid in defence also, and his partnership with fellow central defender Jores Okore is surely the best that Garde has available to him. Micah Richards offers an interesting dilemma. He may be captain of the club, but Leandro Bacuna put in a great performance against the Eagles. Aly Cissokho is definitely better than Kieran Richardson.

Mark Bunn will have a tougher task ahead of him with the always-potent Leicester attack that features Vardy, Riyad Mahrez, Marc Albrighton and Shinji Okazaki. His distribution was better than Brad Guzan's, and outside of a near-disaster in the opening minute of the match, he organised the backline quite well. Hopefully the clean sheet gives him a confidence boost.

Possible lineups:

Aston Villa (4<4>2):

Mark Bunn; Leandro Bacuna, Jores Okore, Joleon Lescott, Aly Cissokho; Ashley Westwood, Idrissa Gana Gueye, Jordan Veretout, Carles Gil; Jordan Ayew, Libor Kozák.

Leicester City (4-4-2):

Kasper Schmeichel; Danny Simpson, Wes Morgan, Robert Huth, Christian Fuchs; Riyad Mahrez, N'Golo Kanté, Danny Drinkwater, Marc Albrighton; Shinji Okazaki, Jamie Vardy.

Would you stick with this team if you were Rémi Garde? Let us know in the comments!

I think the Premier League is competitive enough that any team can beat any other team by playing hard & maybe a couple of lucky bounces. To even think that beating Villa is a a walk in the park is disastrous. We need to take this game very seriously as these points make the difference at the end of the year
