Adult version of a recorder, the bane of every parent’s life back when.

“Listen to me play this, Daddy”

“Hang on a minute, I’m just going to ram a pair of knitting needles into my ears first”

yep there's only so many times you can listen to Three Blind Mice or Frere Jacques

...and that number of times is less than one

I've not worn a poppy for a couple of years now to be honest. The whole way things have gone with the poppy have driven me away. The frenzied expectation that anyone on TV must wear one, poppies on nearly every lamp post. Companies emblazoning the poppy on their brand (through cynical means or fear of being called out I don't know.)

I see recently the British Legion were being cancelled by right-wing social media a few days ago for advertising for an Equalities and Diversity Manager on £55,000 a year salary.

This did it for me a couple of years back. Ridiculous.image.thumb.jpg.009bb459648e567a063735a7eda1df2a.jpg

I think someone in another thread called it Merry Griefmas and it sums it up perfectly. This time of year used to be about sombre reflection and thanks to those who made sacrifices in war, now its about who can have the biggest poppy, who got the most garish remembrance hoodie, or their car painted with soldier silhouettes. People putting Christmas like displays outside their houses. It's madness and it's not needed imo. If people were actually using it to make money for vets charities, fair enough, but they aren't they are just competing for who can show the most grief in the most tacky way.

just my personal opinion but a crappy plastic poppy cable tied to every lampost in the town centre just looks a bit shit anyway

And you're right, I think the media crazed expectation that everyone should wear one at all times for two weeks before makes me more reluctant to pin one to my jacket

I don't know what has happened with these. I feel like it's the football shirt phenomenon (and by the way, how big are the poppies on football shirts now!?) One Parish Council seems to have started the trend, and then every other needs to get in on it to be "seen" to do it, followed closely by people outraged that their Parish Council hasn't done anything.

They do look naff and they are probably a bloody nightmare for the poor Parish maintenance man to put up and take down.

Going to the cinema is a dreadful experience. Call me crazy, but I really don't fancy sitting in the dark with a bunch of strangers for three hours that are sat there rustling packets, slurping drinks, talking all the way through the film and having to pay a tenner or something for it. I would much rather watch at home.

Last time I went to the cinema there were only 2 people in the screen with me (earlyish Saturday morning). Was brilliant.

Can definitely see the point about busy showings, though.

Don’t vote, they are all playing us.

The Boris bus, expenses scandal, Hancock, paid for holidays and flat decoration.

There is a new one every week, it’s wholly corrupt.

And you know what, we tootle along to a booth and put an X in a box and actually give one side our blessing.

We actually argue one side against the other, it’s like backing one school bully against the other.

We are stupid to vote, we go along with this crap and get treated poorly.

Don’t vote and they will finally realise we need change, or draw a cock and balls on the voting paper.

That is my unpopular opinion - boom

Perhaps you'd like to enlighten us as to the better system of government you'd put in place instead then?

Cycling on a path alongside a canal should be banned unless there is a designated cycle lane. If it's illegal to cycle on a pavement then it should also be illegal to cycle alongside a canal.

Sad that its come to that. Some movies are just not the same unless viewed in a theatre. Sadly here in my town theatres are being demolished at an alarming rate. Covid putting the finishing touches on what was a declining industry to begin with.

I enjoy going to the cinema, but I don't enjoy pricks who can't go 2 hours without stuffing their faces with noisy snacks. It's almost through the entire film too. How can you eat constantly for that long?!!

Even worse, Odeon that I go to allow you to bring in your own food. Some people have brought McDonald's in before, constantly crumpling packaging the whole time.

It annoys the hell out of me having to keep dodging bikes when I'm walking along the side of a canal or having to stop because a cyclist wants to come past, especially when they ring their bell. It's also not safe having cyclists and pedestrians sharing the same space, hence why they are not allowed on the pavement when you are next to the road, it being next to water also isn't exactly safe.

Eh? Surely it's annoying when a cyclist doesn't ring a bell?.....ringing a bell is a sign of courtesy

Certainly more polite than shouting "out of the way, dickhead!"

Anyone who isn’t a horse on a towpath doesn’t get to whiney about anything else they encounter on a towpath - unless they are towing something.

You wouldn’t believe the crap I had to put up with when I took my motorbike and motorbike trailer down there for a speed trial. Some people just love a moan I guess.

As always in response to this kind of thing - a non-vote is just a vote for the Tories. The worse the turnout, the more the Tories win by.

And this kind of stuff is often said by closet Tories who pretend they aren't Tories.

They won't realise we need to change at all. A typical tactic of the Tories is to deliberately try to lower the voting turnout and to muddy the waters by saying their is no one to vote for so stay at home. A dream scenario for them would be a 30% turnout, because they know that those turning out are going to disproportionally be older people.
