Looking to adopt a German Shepherd over the next few weeks. Any advice any forum members have?

Need a lot of exercise and stimulation in my opinion. Long/decent walks in the morning and evening. Don't think I would recommend them to most people just because of how much exercise they need. Similar to a Husky although not quite as extreme. 40 minutes morning and 40 minutes evening at least I would imagine.

They are barkers and will bark often. A proper loud bark at the door etc.

Very trainable but you do need to train them and socialise them with dogs at an early age as they can be aggressive for other dogs. You do need to be quite a firm but fair owner.

Make sure its a good breeder as I think they sometimes get issues with their hips and back especially from poor breeding practices.

Personally I don't think they make good dogs for first time dog owners. Can be a handful and aren't the best at being left alone all day (if you work full time and no one is in for a lot of the day). But suppose it depends on your needs. Decent watch dogs etc  and they are incredibly loyal dogs but they will require training properly. If you do decide your heart is set on one I'd strongly recommend going to those puppy classes so it can socialise and also get a trainer or go to training classes so that you can get the basics down etc.  The vast majority of dogs can be trained to behave well although adopting dogs always have a chance of a complicated background which may come with baggage.

Personally If I was looking for a medium/large sized dog I would go for the easier breeds.

Pets 4 homes has quite a decent website on different dog breeds which can be helpful

Do you have young kids? Is the dog fully grown? Is this your first dog?? If yes to most of these maybe not the best ideal dog to go for,

My MIL has a German Shepherd and pretty much all of this is spot on.

Apart from the exercise bit, honestly the laziest dog I’ve ever seen - the only dog I’ve ever come across that hides when you tell her it’s walk time lol

Dreading any prospect of stopping dog walking, not too bad for people who have small lapdogs used to a lap of the block but absolutely  no good for anyone who has a hunting breed used to two four mile field walks a day plus HPR training.we literally have a ferrari with four legs.

Tell me about it.
I will still take mine over the fields, to hell with the consequences.

It’s rural where I live but I’m still only taking them out once a day and not taking the Micheal, there’s no way though I won’t be able to take them out, especially when it’s down to the actions of a selfish few that’ll bring this on.

Ditto, got 2 husky’s that really aren’t going to enjoy that.

Luckily I live about 10 metres from a field and will take them out in the dark if I need to. It’s a bit harsh on people that follow the rules to not allow that although I’m sure they will let people with dogs out once a day.

I literally live next door to fields where I very rarely see anything other than wildlife, people are driving to access the fields now with their dog's. Still easy to walk and keep 100 mtrs away from anyone so Social distancing not an issue.

Now the ridiculous thing is I walk my dog which may be stopped but I will still have to shop where people are still picking up items and putting them back on the shelves , and then try to keep 2mtrs away from anyone which really is fcuking impossible.

Supernarkets are the breeding ground for this virus now not field walking dogs.

My last four dogs were German Shepherds. I love them so much and they are gentle and loving. MUST have plenty of exercise, or they will get over boisterous.
