It could be that Adidas wanted less gold to disassociate themselves with the recent Puma designs. Especially seeing as this seasons Puma kit had a gold stripe down the shoulders. Tbf we're a bit late to the Adidas/Nike party, a lot of people are leaving them for other manufactures, not the other way around. It is smart though, as much as a football shirt can be.
