I think Claude Puel was not ready for Europa unless we qualified his way. If he actually said Burnley deserved 7th from “consistency” then he doesn’t know what he’s talking about. Burnley has a stretch winning only 6 points from 11 straight league games.

Do you honestly believe we are ready for Europe, I think we have dodged a bullet not finishing 7th. We would start what mid July with something like 9 1st teamers on WC duty no summer break to speak of & straight into a new season our squad isn't strong enough as proved the last few weeks when hit by injury & suspensions.

I don't think Burnley will be anywhere near as strong as they were this season like us they aren't big enough to cope just yet.

What Puel has done last few months is look at everyone in & around the first team, he knows whats required to take us forward & make us stronger, I actually think it was good management once 7th was gone to experiment after all finish 8th might as well finish 10th for the sake of 4m you've given everyone a go & those that haven't performed can't grumble when / if he shows them the door.

We’re all going to be forced into patience here, the guy’s clearly sticking around for a bit, but what makes so many people think the guy’s got everything figured out? People are going out on more limbs for this guy than they would for their own mothers.

I can’t speak for anyone else but for me I’m just sick of the merry go round & regurgitation of the same managers failing & walking from job to job. It’s time for stability just like we had with Pearson he got us so far maybe as far as he could but now it’s time to give the next management team a fair crack of the whip which 6mths isn’t.

I mostly agree with you and think we could get into a big mess spending a short offseason joining so many other clubs in a big manager chase. What I don’t understand is people insisting that Puel has got everything figured out. I  don’t question his transfer acumen but what has he really said or done to show he’s used his time here to figure out the best way forward from a tactical and management perspective?

Depends. If you look at the games in which we've played good football under Puel as a sign of potential then he's shown something positive

If you look at our bad run as the definition of Puel's time here then he hasnt shown anything

I'm erring on the positive because the good football has been attractive and looked a little bit new in style

The bad football has looked better than the bad football under Ranieri and Shakey

Also, Puel actually appears to have a good influence on signing new players so far

Unbelievable that he would come out with this crap about not being ready for Europe, especially as we played in the Champions League a couple of seasons ago, and reached the quarters.

We ended this season with a threadbare squad padded out with 20 year olds. Do you know how many games we'd have to play to reach the final of the EL from where we'd start from? It would decimate our squad.

I can get with that.

As much as I’m a skeptic, I’m not gonna act like the guy spit in my grandma’s face, like some folks. :P

“After the saving the club we tried to play for seventh place in the table, and with different problems we didn’t succeed. I have no regrets about this.

“Perhaps we weren’t ready for this.

“For the next season we have to strengthen the team and also in our character and desire. We must be consistent.”

I think that is quite a fair assessment, he did come in and bring us from bottom part of table to finish in the upper part. Maybe 9th wasn't as good as some of us wanted or expected it to be. But im pretty sure before he came in and we sat at 17th -14th with Shakey and Appleton we all would have gladly taken 9th.

I would have loved for us to have finished where Burnley did and kudos to them for getting it, but are they ready for Europe? Would be have been ready if we had achieved it? I dont know the answer. Perhaps not.

He is moving us in the right direction and as he has stated is trying to strengthen, he has made 2 signings, one cheapy unknown who seems to have great potential and as a newbie is fitting in great & another who is a top class player, playing in a position we have been crying out for several seasons.

Puel is destined for failure, the partisan crowd we have and his lack of open and honesty on his behalf.....a few poor performances next season he will be off.....what's the point of keeping him???

"saving the club" is a bit of a stretch, I know we were pretty awful under Shakey but we had quite a tough start. Think we'd have been fine.

Felt the same way about Claudio...but that’s how it goes.

. Where's the ambition?

Or he had the owners permission to totally investigate the squad. So in this window we don't waste time and money. He will now know who and what positions need to be sorted.

Then if done correctly we become far stronger and can cope with Europe. Or would you prefer we went for it and done a wet spam.

So the team and coaching staff just flunked both performances and results in the second half of the season to avoid European football because they’re all looking long term when it comes to failing to make simple passes on the pitch and making questionable team selections on the day? Just seems like an excuse to me from our fans to cover up for our turd performances

Perhaps we weren’t ready for this.

I personally think playing in the Europa League is seen as being undesirable nowadays and unlike the glamour of the equivalent UEFA Cup and Cup Winners' Cup European competitions years ago, the Europa League is now only seen as a worthwhile exercise if you get to the actual final. Arguably that is very much the same attitude shown towards the League Cup in this country in many regards. As we've also recently featured in the Champions League the season before last then it further erodes what little glamour there is to the Europa League as a competition now for the team. Had we not won the league (nor finished in the top four in 2016), then of course the situation for us would be an entirely different one of course.

As regards 'ambition' then by now having to play Europa League games on top of the league and domestic cup games next season then you can bet Burnley won't be faring as well next season in the league as they did this season just gone, especially with what is a lesser squad at their disposal than the teams who finished just behind them like ours and Everton's.
