he's priceless to us but he'd be valued at around 40 million (he's a young talented English defender) so his value is higher because he's English. Man City paid 47.5 million for John Stones

The Van Dijk fee isn't a reliable barometer of value. Liverpool were absolutely desperate for a centre half, they'd already been in trouble over a previous illegal approach, and they had the Coutinho money.

I think £50m would be a fair opening offer a club could make for Maguire.

Difficult to value accurately right now, but his value has shot up after arguably being the best CB for England so far in the WC. He was great last week and really stood out.

Still has to iron out some silly errors, but he looks fantastic when with the ball and moving forward.

Not that Leicester would consider selling him in this window, but I expect a realistic market value of him right now is close to the £50m mark others have mention. Having said that, due to Leicester not needing or wanting to sell, you could add another £20m to that if a Man City, Man U, Chelsea etc all came knocking!

£50m MV. £70m Would go for now. IMO.

No need to sell unless he puts in a request. Puel has said that Harry is a cornerstone of the build. Having said that we need to qualify for Europe & maybe win a cup to keep his interest.

We need Maguire a hell of a lot more than we need 50m regardless of what other teams view his worth as, which is irrelevant because he's not for sale.

So true

lets muddy the waters a bit and say a couple of CL teams approach his agent and offer him 150k/week

we are paying him 80k/week

is it fair for us to just carry on regardless and expect the player to continue as if nothing has happened ...........  shouldn’t we be facing up to the fact that we either pay our ‘superstars’ closer to their market rate or we have to let them go? (For a higher than market value price).  Or we get into the mix for champions league places ourselves.  (Easier said than done).

Whilst a player like Maguire may have been unsure about a move to a top six team for fear he may not play regularly, it’s likely different now after his England performances. of course he could have a mare today and no one will come knocking as a consequence!

There has to be middle ground though doesn't there?

The problem with these types of scenarios is that, if you, as a club, are found to be too easy to deal with, every players agent (and other clubs) start trying to take the piss. They'll have a couple of good games, agent starts a press rumour about a 'big club' then tries to hike up the players existing deal. Ronaldo practically does it every season (granted, that's Ronaldo, he keeps performing so keeps getting a wage rise).

The club have to have a pretty clear plan of how they want to deal with this type of thing without setting a dangerous precedent.

If we take Mahrez as an example, given what he has produced since the last Man City episode, there's an argument we should have just sold him at that point. I think the club were setting their stall out to show they aren't pushovers rather than just desperately keeping hold of the player.

Given their attitude to that offer, I can't see them letting Harry go, at any price really.

Take your point - the club should have enough contacts etc to know what’s real and what isn’t though. Maguire and his team should be told that he isnt for sale at any price and that the club will take account of his progress with an improvement on his existing terms available for signature by Xmas.

Agree 100%

Whilst it would be great to say to a player, 'you're under contract, that's the deal you signed', we all know that players can cause untold grief under those circumstances. A rational way to deal with it is exactly what you have mentioned in my book. Yes, his valuation has gone up (so far) during this World cup but that should require backing up by performances on the pitch for us before we jump in and add a whack to his salary. I think it's perfectly reasonable to say 'keep playing well and we'll have something on the table by Christmas'. Whether the player and agent accept that is the key though I suppose.
