I sincerely hope this is only until January.  I also hope they are paying 100% of his wages plus a fee.

To spend 13M on a player and farm him immediately before he has had the chance to settle at LCFC, and this, to a standard of football that is inferior from whence he came (and the EFL Championship) is, quite baffling.  Developing a young player against SPL strikers is not ideal.    The Championship surely would have been a much better option.

Seems to have worked out OK with Van Dijk.

Loan Wes to them instead or better still sell Wes to them.

I don’t think wes fits Brendan’s idea of a ball playing centre back. quite happy with this development. Better than playing U23 football down here and also better than the championship for his development (where he may end up in/out of a side and under more pressure)

he will also have European football

Liverpool bought him from Southampton not Celtic.    So are you saying his development was 100% attributable to playing in the SPL and not the EPL? Interesting.

Dont think there was any mention of it being "100% attributable to playing in the spl", but clearly youre choosing to entirely ignore the fact that van dijk spent time developing in the spl before Southampton brought him to the premier league. For the record i agree that it would be more beneficial to loan to a championship club but we dont know what interest was out there, so lets not make out like this is some sort of disaster and theres absolutely no benefit to be had from it

Hope you are correct.  Good response BTW!

Wonder if he knew he would loaned out. If not then he clearly has not looked good enough in the under 23 games. 13m wasted?

If he wasn't good enough Celtic wouldn't want him.

He’ll be a much better player for it long term (which is what he’s here for) than if he spends the season here playing U23s and the odd cup game. Struggling to see the downside of it.

No problem with this.

He's been playing first team football for a top team in front of passionate fans in country which produced one of the World Cup Finalists,

I think a season here playing for our U23's in front of a couple of hundred every week would crush his spirit.

This.  Whilst the SPL is gash, the environment is that of a big club so will help him massively when he comes back.

If he loan him off Celtic, he might aswell been loaned back Zagreb. Stronger league and a good chance of Champions League football

Zagreb have been knocked out already.

I'm perfectly happy with this, the game time he would get here would be minimal as he's possibly the 5th choice CB.

Morgan will be leaving next summer and Maguire could be off as well so a year at Celtic and then come back here when we might only have Evans and Soyuncu is absolutely fine. Benkovic is one of highest rated young CB's in Europe so some good forward planning by the club as he was cover in case Maguire went. Much better to have him at Celtic rather than him coasting through development squad games.

This. On paper it seems excellent forward thinking from the club.

Also can't believe some are suggesting that SPL football isn't an appropriate move for a 21year old who has never played outside the Croatian division. A decent standard of physical British football and more european experience with the Europa League. Good for his development and we can likely bring in a decent loan fee too.

We can afford to let him go since we have six possible centre halves but I would have liked to see him play. I guess I'll just tune into Celtics matches then.

Playing for a manager who uses ball playing defenders and passing out from the back similar to how Puel does, in a team that will be going for the treble again. He'll play in front of a decent crowd at Celtic Park and potentially an old firm derby, the experiences the guy can only develop from.

Precisely, can massively see the attraction too as Celtic are a very reputable club around Europe due to their following and historical successes. They've developed some very good players too in the past like Van Dijk, Forster, Wanyama and Tierney as well as those that have had very respectable careers in the English game like Kayal, Ledley, Boruc and Stefan Johansen at Fulham

Edit: also a fellow countryman in Jozo Simunovic up there to help Benkovic settle in.

Will also help in settle into the professional life style of the UK which may differ slightly from Croatia.

Rodgers, for all his faults, is also a class coach and any time with him should benefit Benkovic.

At the time of posting, Zagreb were still in the competition.

Folk talk of the old firm games. This bloke has played in Zagreb v Split games. The fixtures and league are very comparable. Rijeka are your Aberdeen. A couple of other teams are your Hearts and Hibs.

I’m sure he will learn a lot playing Hamilton, Patrick Thistle and Livingston.

They might have been still in the Champions League then, but they're not now. He'll probably learn a lot more playing against Hamilton and Partick than against teams that he's already played against in Croatia. He'll also play in front of 50,000 plus crowds which would better prepare him for the KP than playing in front of Zagreb's average home crowd of 4000.
