Sly Posted 28 February 2019 Posted 28 February 2019 I’ve been watching Mahrez at Manchester City, as I’m sure many have. I’ve been intrigued to see how he’ll adapt to playing with bigger players. Blue Moon ( Manchester City forum) have a players section, so they’ve got an entire thread for Mahez. To be honest it doesn’t read that differently to a Demari Grey discussion on here. Generally concenscous seems to be that he has the technically ability, however he sulks and isn’t on the same wavelength as the rest of the team. Many are calling for them to cash in! I’m surprised, however not surprised. Blue Moon - Mahrez

I reckon he just needs some time, just like Sane and a few others who Guardiola relies on heavily but was left out quite a bit initially. Guardiola said it himself. We all know Mahrez is a really talent, though he probably needs to adapt to the even faster pace that Man City plays at a bit more before he can become a regular at Man City.

The problem is that mahrez is inherently lazy. Technically the best player ever for us in my opinion, and could be one of the best in the world if only he pushed himself on to greatness. Here is the difference between the great players and the number makers. I will always love mahrez but putting things into perspective, he is nowhere near good enough to play for man city if he doesn't work at it.
foxfan92 Posted 28 February 2019 Posted 28 February 2019 He must be desperate for more game time. Get him back here, and that Kante fellow who must be sick and tired being played out of position for Chelsea.
Wolfox Posted 28 February 2019 Posted 28 February 2019 A huge shame to see that talent languishing on the bench…. He’s surely good enough to get in that team?

Not from what I saw. He might come good next season, but right now he can't pretend to a place in the starting XI. City are trailing in the title race and don't have the luxury of bedding him in any further. It's do or die for him.
lgfualol Posted 28 February 2019 Posted 28 February 2019 Pretty sure Bernardo Silva was similar last season. I think some players take a while to settle in Pep's sides. He does look a bit out of confidence though. Come home Riri.
Deeg67 Posted 28 February 2019 Posted 28 February 2019 Worth considering in the discussion of players taking time to adapt to Pep’s style is that Rodgers considers himself a Pep disciple...

Many really offensive comments on that blue moon thread, plenty just think he's not up to it. Wouldn't surprise me if he wants to move on, although he did leave to win more medals and he's doing that at Man City, but not, it seems, doing much more!

Stevosevic Posted 28 February 2019 Posted 28 February 2019 Most Man City fans are very unimpressed. But he signed a 5 year deal for 200k week - he won't be leaving any time soon
AlloverthefloorYesNdidi Posted 28 February 2019 Posted 28 February 2019 They're saying the same thing everyone on here said about him - inconsistent. And as many said he gets away with it here, to a degree, but at Man City it keeps him out of the team

I think Pep knows he can develop him but at the business end of the season they'll be playing more consistent players.

Benji Posted 28 February 2019 Posted 28 February 2019 I do feel for him (from a football perspective). He doesn't start many games and must feel a huge amount of pressure every time he comes on as a sub or in the cup to do something amazing. He sometimes seems in awe of the rest of the team and plays the short pass a lot more than he used to. Needs a decent run in the team and to be a bit greedier and I think he could have a great future there.
Dan Posted 28 February 2019 Posted 28 February 2019 I do agree with the Bernardo / Sane comparisons to an extent but the difference with those two is they were both younger and both came from foreign leagues. Mahrez has less excuse really although it may take until next year for him to properly click in their side.
kingfox Posted 28 February 2019 Posted 28 February 2019 His style of play is far too predictable nowadays, all he does is look to cut inside on his left foot, most left-backs in the league have figured him out. In the cup game against them, Fuchs had Mahrez in his pocket because he knew exactly what Riyad was going to do. Every player was amazing in our title winning season but what did Riyad really do after that? Spells of absolute brilliance and spells of being absolutely crap. Maybe he will come good there or maybe he isn't cut out to play for a top tier team.

He's not though, man city players are on it for 90 mins a game and that's what's expected, Mahrez's on it for 10 mins a game, 10 mins of brilliance maybe, but that's why he's on the bench. Everyone knew that before he went there because we saw it regularly and not just 10 mins on the tv that other fans see.

I just wanted to clarify that I’m a long term ST holder who saw both the good and bad! He has so much talent and ability to change a game…. Is it better than Sterling or Sane? Do the pros outweigh the cons? I’m not sure, but, Pep has made his mind up…

fuchsntf Posted 28 February 2019 Posted 28 February 2019 Mahrez is in his first season with 12+ World class players... He has no further business here,he is is now at another level, where he has to prove himself on a higher stage, with more Expectations on consistency...Man city was that new step up into a new school of learning.... Time will prove it be can cut it,on a longer period....I won't make any judgement, because. It's all mute...
Langston Posted 28 February 2019 Posted 28 February 2019 He's bloody excellent and if you don't think he's good enough for a top 4 side you need to give it a wobble, I think. Isn't quite clicking for him yet at Man City but any Leicester fan disputing his quality (or taking some kind of weird joy in the fact he hasn't quite set the world alight) has to be a really weird sort.
