Fox85 Posted 8 March 2019 Posted 8 March 2019 Gonna be offered a new contract by sounds of things. Rodgers wants to keep him for another year
UniFox21 Posted 8 March 2019 Author Posted 8 March 2019 “I’ve spoken to the club and I would like him to get a year. As long as he can respect and understand where he is in the team and what the role is, I would love to have him here,” he said. Key extract here; this screams background role in the changing room rather than on the pitch.
lcfc sheff Posted 8 March 2019 Posted 8 March 2019 I still think he’s of premier league quality, but doesn’t suit the progression in terms of playing style of the club; as well as him being the past rather than the future. As Brendan has said in this article, if Morgan can accept a cover role aswell as being a leader in the background, then there’s no harm keeping him. theres a reason he gets backed by managers, and it’s not because the players have the manager by the throat!
TheUltimateWinner Posted 8 March 2019 Posted 8 March 2019 Morgan isn’t a starting player anymore, but in a period of transition a strong leader like him in the dressing room pays dividends. As Rodgers said, as long as he knows where his place is and he’s happy there isn’t a problem.

Sunbury Fox Posted 8 March 2019 Posted 8 March 2019 If Wes is happy to play a back up role like Was did in his time here, why wouldn't we give him another year? How many other teams outside the top 4 or 5, can say they have a former title winning captain as cover?
Sampson Posted 8 March 2019 Posted 8 March 2019 He's been much better than Maguire this season and our best defensive partnership this season by a long, long way was Evans and Morgan when Maguire was out injured and Morgan and Evans were both playing very well alongside each other. Alongside Maguire he hasn't played well but Maguire hasn't played well alongside either Evans or Morgan. People just pick up on Morgan's mistakes a lot more because they've already got tgis narrative in their head about him being past it and pin absolutely anything on him even when other players are far more culpable.
dylanlegend Posted 8 March 2019 Posted 8 March 2019 I suspect this is more for his off field influence rather than on field, for relatively low wages it’s a no brainer. Obviously a good influence
Ian Nacho Posted 8 March 2019 Posted 8 March 2019 I think people doubt how much of an impact he has behind the scenes. Almost like he is a coach.
lgfualol Posted 8 March 2019 Posted 8 March 2019 As long as he doesnt play much and takes a paycut this is fine.
kyleolly Posted 8 March 2019 Posted 8 March 2019 Can’t play him very often because he’s not got the legs to chase a striker but his level of commitment and desire to defend our goal is the best from any defender we have still!
UniFox21 Posted 8 March 2019 Author Posted 8 March 2019 Lot of people seem to be jumping at the thought of Wes being kept, assuming he'll be a pitch presence. But look how Rodgers managed Gerrard, an icon coming to his end. Just because he's being kept around, doesn't guarantee his presence in the starting 11 or even the bench. The role he can play in the background; on the training ground, the dressing room are massively understated. The guys hugely experienced, nothing on Gerrard in terms of playing career, but he's been around and at the top enough to be able to pass on words of advice to our vastly younger squad.
Clarkey123 Posted 8 March 2019 Posted 8 March 2019 I think the younger generation will benefit from Morgan sticking around and is a good figure in the dressing room. All round smart move Brendan
psychonaut Posted 8 March 2019 Posted 8 March 2019 Thread title is so disrespectful, if this thread is going to be pulled up when discussing his current situation at least change it to something a little more fitting for a title winning captain.
AjcW Posted 8 March 2019 Posted 8 March 2019 It must be strange for him coming to end of his career in an age where a defender is allowed to make mistakes as long as they can distribute from the back If an old fashioned defender was still all you needed to be he’d still be up there for sure, blocks, tackles... easy for him. Pace is clearly his main issue at the minute. He looked fine in the 3, but got no chance in a 2 anymore! Think its a completely fine decision, and despite not being quoted on there Brendan said he’d be kept round as long as he understood he wouldn’t be a first teamer
FLAN Posted 9 March 2019 Posted 9 March 2019 Ffs just get him gone. He’s embarrassingly out of his depth against any sort of quality now. Can’t believe Rodgers is suggesting this. Playing him was clearly a mistake last week and he now wants to keep him longer.

Offering him a contract sends a sign to the other veteran players who we will depend on - Vardy and Kasper (and to some extent Evans) in that older players are important and we will look after you. At the same time this clearly says to me that Morgan is a back-up player next season who might get games in the cup but is essentially there as a mentor figure to help develop the new breed of LCFC centre backs that we have, but whom can step in if needed. Perhaps he can also use the time to complete his coaching badges and become part of the coaching team, Kolo Toure style. I'm sure if Wes wants to embark on a coaching career at the club, that option is open to him. It also means if he wants to leave, no one can say the club left him in the lurch, and it's a personal decision to go, not the manager's. The type of club we are going to become seems to be one that is similar to Monaco, Dortmund or Ajax. These teams generally develop young players and give them a chance, with some of them going on to leave for crazy sums. But you can't just play kids, you need a strong base of veterans whom are loyal and set an example to the kids. Monaco in their best years had Subasic in goal, Glik at CB, Moutinho in midfield and Falcao up front to help players like Mbappe, Lemar, Bernardo, etc. Dortmund have Reus (29), Pisczeck (33) and Witsel (30) who are among their most consistent and important players. Ajax who dismantled Real Madrid so spectacularly have Tadic (30, Schone (32) and Blind (29) but also have thrilling youngsters such as Dolberg, Neres, de Light and de Jong. So we need to find a balance between keeping a few high quality veterans and investing in youth, and this sounds like a good way to start doing that. Wes has been our captain for many years and arguably is our greatest ever Captain. A year as a back-up is fitting for the man.
murphy Posted 9 March 2019 Posted 9 March 2019 Without Wes, we would go into next season with only 4 CBs, two of which are unproven in the prem (Benko and Calgar). We need a fifth. This is a good move for the club and a good deal for Wes.
Jimmy Posted 9 March 2019 Posted 9 March 2019 If we are going with a 4 he’s not needed and if we are going with a 3 then he’s not good enough on the ball to play the central role and not mobile enough to play either side

He’s had quite a decent season and it wouldn’t be a bad idea to keep him around for backup and cups.
