Bobby Hundreds Posted 5 August 2019 Posted 5 August 2019 If Root gets hammered in this series surely we have big questions to ask about his tenure as captain?

Regardless of struggles in the field, this has been ****ing limp from England today with the bat. I was asking Matt and VB how much a difference it was for Roy to open in a test to an ODI and he's given a prime example of what they were talking about earlier. What's he tried to smash Lyon out of the ground for when he needs to be treating his wicket as sacred? I had said earlier myself how woeful the batting has been and it’s village cricket standard, the frightening thing is when the pressure is on this is not a one off. If I ,as an ex village cricketer can work how to play to circumstances. They should do. Regarding Anderson, when we were on top and the quality of Anderson with a swinging ball that result might have been different. We will never know.Probably harsh before because injuries can happen at anytime. Australia deserved that.but we have so much work to do in many departments.
PAULCFC Posted 5 August 2019 Posted 5 August 2019 Should never have let ourselves get in that possition. But well played to the Aussies.
AKCJ Posted 5 August 2019 Posted 5 August 2019 Squad for the second test then? Burns Sibley Root Roy Stokes Buttler (wk) S. Curran Woakes Leach Archer Broad Denley, Bairstow, Ali and Anderson out. Sibley, Curran, Leach and Archer in. Genuinely have no idea. We're so poor.
StanSP Posted 5 August 2019 Author Posted 5 August 2019 Australia still have Starc to come in as well . No doubt he'll love the Lord's pitch. He did during the World Cup...

fuchsntf Posted 5 August 2019 Posted 5 August 2019 We were poor after, Aussies 122-8... Aussies Smith,is a Top great, but we are Not Bowling 1 bowler, that says I will be the One to Bowl discipline on the off-stump....all day long!!! Moen failed Big time..!!...Lyon shown him up...his Test, career isnt over, but selectors should send him back to County cricket...for this series.!!!! We all have our ideas...so here goes..!! Roy......,..............Let him go through 3 Tests Burns Root Foakes Stokes Bairstow..Wkt............Let him have the Next Test Curran.....Now is his time!! Woakes Leach...put him up the order Archer/Stone....depends in Archers Real fitness...!! No gambling!! Broad......Walking wicket who might get 30-60 runs,or flunk!! Bit still a great WClass Great bowler.. Butler..Let him Think about his 5 day game....One could easily Think that Bairstow & Butler might be competing for that One batting place. Foakes could well nip in,und take the Gloves long time!!! Shame !! We are still discussing...opener(Roy) then Bairstow & Butler....the last 2 , we so hoped we would have 2 Automatic choices by now!!! 4 big positions, have failed on mental discipline... Bairstow,Butler,Moen....Then Roy,but he as only started in Red-ball cricket... Selectors IMO havent been poor, they are being sort of Let down by the inconsistencies.....Dont forget Root must also dip in with Big scores 80+ a few Ashes tests big hundreds....From the 1St 4 we Need 3 consistently getting big scores....Middle Order 2-4 of them 60+. Anderson...we must be prepared that we dont see him in These Ashes,or at best possible 4th test..
StanSP Posted 5 August 2019 Author Posted 5 August 2019 Away from Ashes a bit, Dale Steyn has retired from cricket. Injury affected him last few years but before that he was one of the best bowlers in the game. One of my favourites. Not unexpected to see him retire given his recent injuries but South Africa had one hell of a bowler on their hands when he played!
TheSomersetFox Posted 5 August 2019 Posted 5 August 2019 Archer and Leach in for Jimmy and Moeen. Pretty pathetic collapse but saw enough positives in that test to be encouraged. Playing the game with only 2 frontline seamers and a shite spinner cost us in the end. The gulf in class between Moeen and Lyon is like the gulf in class between me and Brett Lee.
Guest MattP Posted 5 August 2019 Posted 5 August 2019 No idea where we go from here. Ali is finished, Denly and Roy are nowhere near good enough to play test cricket and even our most "talented" bats like Bairstow and Buttler look dreadful. No Anderson is a disaster as well, will hit us even harder on flatter pitches.

I agree, but there's such a lack of alternatives. Realistcally I'd say Stokes is the only alternative candidate at present.

Do you think Bairstow and Buttler, and of course Roy, in particular boils down to the concertation on white ball cricket? I guess you could say it's worthwhile given the WC, but not at how much it seems to have set back the test side.

I think it does, players just have no idea how to bat for time anymore, all this bollocks about playing your natural game means nothing if you don't have the mental strength. Strange thing is its affected everyone, when we saved that test in Auckland Broad was something like 2 not out from 70 balls, it was brilliant batting but he couldn't do that now.

Look at the balls seen off by Cook, Bell and Broad then. None of this lot could do that now.
when_you're_smiling Posted 5 August 2019 Posted 5 August 2019 There’s a huge clamour for Ali out, but he’s the leading wicket taker in the past calendar year. Think he could still be in next Test as throwing Leach in would be a huge gamble especially with a debutant in Archer also surely in the team. I wonder if Azad was making his runs for most other counties, whether there would be a clamour for him to open and move Roy down to three/four. Surely too early for Azad at the moment though. Roy should keep a place, though that dismissal today would have got him bollocking in a Sunday village friendly, never mind trying to save an Ashes test. There were here plenty of positives for England, but the be all and end all is I don’t see how they’re going to get Steve Smith out no matter who they bring in.

A track that's prepared flat and hard then Australia have the quicker more aggressive options which is what they live off back home anyway. Anything else, we now don't have the best swing bowler in Cricket and bang average spin options against Gary the goat.

Lords and the Oval to come and we'll probably need to win one of them, I just don't see how we can do it now. The pressure on Archer and Leach is going to be ridiculous as well and neither are genuine world class bowlers.
Corky Posted 5 August 2019 Posted 5 August 2019 What the hell has happened to the team in the last innings? How many thrashings is that over the past four/ five years? Very damaging defeat.

I'm probably being unfair but to me he lacks charisma and credibility as a leader. Stokes all day long for me..

Very damaging defeat. This is interesting as it co-incides with us becoming good at one day cricket. I honestly think that this is a consequence of directing more resources towards having a successful oneday team and winning the world cup. The coach is a one day specialist and we have a complete lack of international class batsman within the county game. Add to that the lack of spinning option and we're screwed. It's going to take some time for us to become a top test team once again, however it's the sacrifice we've had to make in order to win the World Cup.
sm1 Posted 5 August 2019 Posted 5 August 2019 Some harsh comments. If Anderson was fit we'd have bowled the Aussies for under 150 first innings, and walked this test. Coupled to that this 5th day wicket was made for a spinner. The balls span sideways and bouncing up to shoulder height some balls and ankle height the next. Ali definitely needs dropping for leach though. Still think we'll win at Lords.

Exactly this mate I have no idea if Stokes has the credentials to be captain but my god when the chips are down you just know he would get a reaction from the team and lead by example. Without sounding harsh to Root all u can see him coming out with in the dressing room is along the lines of " Unlucky lads, we did really well, lets have a brew and lets just try and put it right in the next test" Stokes or even Broad if he was a couple of years younger.
SouthStandUpperTier Posted 5 August 2019 Posted 5 August 2019 I think the most disappointing thing was that the Aussies didn't even have to break out the sandpaper to skittle England.
