Premier League Thread 2019/20

Recommended Posts

If they can't get the season finished for some reason, maybe they should look at giving points to teams based on the reverse fixture.

We've got nine games left and we won eight of them so: another 24 points for us!

Seriously though, I suspect they'll just cram the games in when they can, across May and June, health stuff permitting, with the Euros put back until 2021.

Not so sure it will finish at all. Just come across this gem of a quote buried in a Guardian article

"One club executive told the Guardian they expected the season to be suspended for several weeks in the light of the Arteta news, and didn’t rule out the possibility of the whole season being voided."

Well the last bit would avoid the "embarrassment" of having to have us and possibly Sheffield Utd play in Europe. Presuambly they could just go back to last season's results.

If the decision later this morning is to shelve the rest of the season, then it would perhaps be best to promote the top 2 teams in each division with NO relegations.

Next season, 4 teams will be relegated and 2 automatically promoted (with perhaps, for instance,  the next top 2 clubs in the Championship engaged in a playoff with the next 2 lowest-placed clubs in the EPL). After that (and perhaps a rescheduled Euro Championships in the summer of 2021), normality resumes - until the wacky WC interruption of 2022.

...the EPL will struggle to come to a solution if the remaining matches cannot be played at some point in the summer . Numerous clubs will sue them for 'lost opportunity' otherwise as the monies involved are critical for some of them and also the championship promotion contenders .

What a ridiculous comment. Hardly as embarrassing as teams like that pub team who played  man utd last night. If after 30 games you in a European place you deserve it. The embarrassing thing is teams like spurs and arsenal being behind teams like us and sheff utd.

I think you might have misunderstood my sentiment. I don't think it would be embarrasing. Maybe should have put "embarrassing".

Simple if no other games can be played this season, at some point over the season top 6 in the Champions play the bottom 6 in the premier league winner gets a place in the PL next season.

All other league positions stand as they are now.

 Relegation/ promotion Play offs

brighton v Preston

west ham v Forest

watford V Brentford

Fulham v Bournemouth

West Brom v Villa

Leeds v Norwich

One off games, with advantage to the teams currently in a position to play premier league next season.

Champions League
Liverpool

Leicester

Chelsea

Man Utd

Europa League

Wolves

Sheff Utd

Arsenal - get the last spot as the highest team not in Europe left in the FA Cup.

Just suspend it until all is safe to resume. Push the whole Calendar of matches along. Why’s this so difficult to resolve?

obviously, this would mean some competitions being shelved, ones which haven’t started yet (Euros etc)

Exactly. The only thing driving the 'write off this season' idea other than humorous digs at Liverpool, Leeds etc is seeing next season as set in stone. If we need to have a shorter competition then do it next year when the competition can start with everyone knowing how many games will be played.

Postpone the league for now, hope to get it up and running again in the summer. The Euros needs to be put back a year (it's not really a Euros anyway considering it's in several different countries, that's basically extended qualifiers, so I couldn't care less about that).

If it's still a problem in the summer the fairest thing to do would be to declare the league standings as they are now. Voiding the seasons results up to this point would be a disgrace.

Neither the Premier League nor the government are covering themselves in glory here. Seems they are williing to put people's health at risk for financial reasons. We should be acting before things get out of hand, not after.

In the grand scheme of things sport isn't important, but in terms of completing the competitions I think finishing the domestic leagues and European club competitions is more important than the euros. They could skip this euros, just cancel it. Just make it null and void and try and complete the domestic leagues etc over the summer.

We've done more than 75% of the season, if we have to bin it the current standings should stand - with no champion declared for the season and the highest ranked team left in it awarded the FA Cup of course.

It's only really harsh on Bournemouth. The top 4 have been like this for months and Norwich and Villa are the 2 worst teams in the league.

Most leagues are doing the same, postponing for a few weeks. No other league has abandoned the league, so not sure why you were expecting the premier league to do so.

I was not expecting cancellation, I was expecting longer than 2 weeks, maybe 1 month.

First step is always going suspension they are not going to jump straight to abandonment as that’s a massive knee jerk reaction, no other country has abandoned their season

with Arsenal and now Chelsea’s Full squad in isolation I don’t see anything else then a suspension being announced

Can't see "all clubs" coming to an agreement on this. Man utd will insist that they still expect to make a champions league spot, and the bottom 3 won't just accept relegation, there's too much money involved. Equally the top sides in the championship will not accept non promotion. The only option is to find a way to finish this season off even if that's 3-4 months down the line.
