TheUltimateWinner Posted 24 July 2019 Posted 24 July 2019 On the face of it it does look like they're making the mistakes of Fulham and QPR a few years ago. Signing good players on paper but they probably won't gel... The teams that come up and do well are normally ones that keep their core squad, look at us, Brighton and Wolves. Those who spend big normally fall short.
The Horse's Mouth Posted 24 July 2019 Posted 24 July 2019 they're not even signing ballers, just a bunch of bum dossers, they'll finish 20th and terry finishes the season as manager

Cake Posted 24 July 2019 Posted 24 July 2019 They will be fine. T least 4 sides worse than they are, apart from Everton they have completed the most top flight games so hardly a flash in the pan club. I like having local rivals. They will do ok but 6 points for City!
boots60 Posted 24 July 2019 Posted 24 July 2019 Dean Smith has has a good managerial career so far. He's done very well to get to the position he is in now. However, his summer transfer business has been a bit like a kid in a sweetshop & too many new faces + a lack of top quality buys leads me to the conclusion that, yes, Villa are the new Fulham.
Charl91 Posted 24 July 2019 Posted 24 July 2019 From what I understand from my Villa supporting mates, is that they had a paper-thin squad with a lot of loans previously, which is why they've had to buy so many players. Still think they'll get relegated though.
Fox92 Posted 24 July 2019 Posted 24 July 2019 No. Dean Smith is a good manager, I've belief he'll keep them up. I can't comment on the players they've bought though because I've not seen enough of them to form judgement.

Stadt Posted 24 July 2019 Posted 24 July 2019 Don't see them scoring enough goals but it's not as if the bottom of the league is really strong. Hope they go down and then go down again just for being c unts

Those who spend big normally fall short. The thing with us, Brighton and Wolves was the fact we had good squads that were comfortable in the Championship and were ready for the next level. Villa's team was pretty average and they didn't get anywhere near the top teams of the division, hit a bit of form late on. So in my eyes, they did need to bolster up or risk breaking Derby's record. If the team can gel a little bit then I think they can stay in the division, bit of momentum could keep them up. Relegation battle will be interesting this season.
Ric Flair Posted 25 July 2019 Posted 25 July 2019 I cringe when he read this, if they only signed 4 players and went straight back down everyone would question where was their ambition and should have strengthened more. The issue at the minute between Championship and PL is that the gulf in revenue means as soon as you come up and have access to £100m + then you know you have to spend it to compete, especially when most Championship sides take several young PL players on loan every season in a bid to go up. Those players go back, plus there's always a number of players that just aren't going to be good enough for the PL so promoted teams are always going to need 6-10 new players. We know how precarious that first season back in the Prem is, we looked down and out and yes we may have played well but were unlucky, we still were as close as was possible to going straight back down. But when we came up, the difference between the best championship sides and the bottom half of the Prem was much closer, there's always been huge riches in the Prem but not like what we've seen in the last 3 seasons, it's gone berserk. Fulham were weird, they signed some great individuals on paper like Seri, Schurrle, Mitrovic, Chambers, Bryan but it didn't work for them. Dean Smith knows what he is doing though and although they are a rival of sorts, I have a lot of time for Smith and part of me would like to see him be successful, but not too successful there haha.

It's good to have them back in the top flight.

Guest Kopfkino Posted 25 July 2019 Posted 25 July 2019 They needed to sign a lot of players tbf, threadbare squad once loans went back and players left. Just don't think they're signing great quality, will be touch and go for them. Won't bomb like Fulham.
