Ben Chilwell

Ahh Tielmans and Chilwell , the untouchables. Of course its hard to drop players when you are doing pretty well but we do have alternatives. Hamza for Tielmans , Justin for Chilwell. Guardiola would have done it long ago. We know they can play better, much better, but we are kidding ourselves to think they will do it overnight . Time for a spell on the bench to get them remotivated.

Ricardo is a winger turned RB so this is easier for him. Chilwell is fine overlapping on a winger from LB but having sole responsibility to create attacks from the left is not a position Rodgers should put him in.

So you’re saying he’s not capable of playing wingback? He’s an England international full back and attacking is part of the position. He had opportunity after opportunity to simply run his man. No skill needed, just put your defender on the back foot.

Not a wing back. Still think he's better with a winger in front.

Wish people would constantly get off his back though. If he has one poor game it's end of the world yet others seem to get away with it. We've got a good, young left back. Lets work with it, we know he has the ability.

This isn't a witch hunt, but it is clear he's in poor form.

We all know he can burst fowards into the box but for some reason he's stopped doing it. He is limited in certain aspects *cough* no right foot *cough*, but, when he makes these drives into the box that doesn't hold him back, it's just once you take that away from him he poses little to no attacking threat.

Chilly is young. He’ll have good games and bad games. We need to persist with him at left back/left wing back, as that position, HIS position, is key to our way of playing.

I wish people would stop using young , he is 23 not 18 ffs.

Maybe a little harsh but I’d take 60m for chillwell and develop justin as a left back. Very overrated player.

His positioning is consistently wayward and going forward he rarely takes anyone on, combined with the fact his delivery is also fairly poor.

justin has been decent when playing. He just needs to work on his end product.

Clearly not a wing back. Needs the support of a winger to overload and get past a fullback. Got bullied at the far post yet again for their goal.

The more I think about Chilwell's strengths you state, the more I think the perfect player might be Zaha. He regularly occupies 2 or 3 players, being the main man at Palace. I was against it at first but I'm warming to the thought.

Failing that, perhaps we should cash in on Chilwell with his stock high. Then look for a left-sided Ricky P (Alex Telles/Alex Grimaldo/Jose Gaya) we could potentially improve that area and have money in the bank.

Real tough one as he's definitely been inconsistent this season, some good games, some not so good.

Last night he was poor, offered absolutely nothing going forward and really not sure how he stayed on all game.

Rodgers and Southgate clearly both rate the lad and know him far better than us so whilst 60m sounds good money, you sometimes have to be careful what you wish for.

Lets see how the rest of the season goes and then make a decision in the summer

One of his major issues is that he plays things way too safe. You could look into whether this is a confidence issue, or dare I say, a competence issue.

It's not rocket science to see that he had his breakthrough season under Claude Puel management, whose tactics are substantially different to the mindset of Brendan Rodgers.

Therefore, he is probably still struggling to adapt to what is being asked of him, and that is replicated on the pitch with the sideways/ passing and reluctance to really push forward as a wing-back, like what Ricardo Pereira does so well.

Maybe we need to accept that Chilwell is no wing-back, is too defensive-minded for that, and is therefore not the attacking full-back that Brendan Rodgers wants him to be.

And all this talk about him being young, he has been in our first team squad for a few seasons at PL level now, so that excuse is more of a cop-out than anything. He has had more than enough opportunities to adapt his overall gameplay.

so maybe we need to allow Brendan time to coach him into being more effective in a role that he isn't used to ……….

Guardiola has a squad of super players, Mahrez, our best player when he left, took well over a year to feature semi consistently in his side. The situations aren't that comparable.

He was toss but there’s definitely loads of confirmation bias going on. He’s mostly decent but then a bad game happens and he’s “a weak link, sell him for £50m and then get a replacement in.” He’s got his flaws but he’s still an excellent LB

He's better as a left back with a winger in front of him as the winger draws in their full back for Chilwell to overlap and get past, whereas as wing back he isn't good enough to take on their full back hense he always passes it back

Exactly this - he doesn't have the confidence or ability to take on a defender 1 on 1, whereas he's fine running in behind or onto balls against a winger who is less defensively adept.

Big mistake not to change up that left flank at half time last night, as it was completely ineffectual all game.

So depressing to see our own academy product, England's first choice LB become a scapegoat. He's not even playing badly. Just a little below par. Some people are gonna be ashamed when he's playing for one of the established big 4 in 12 months time and we've got some donkey giving away pens and looking miles off the pace at LB.

James Justin for example?
