The arrogance of the Media on the subject of the Top 6!!

Listening to the 5Live Football daily was really bad. In their title race section all they spoke about was Liverpool and Man City and how it’s almost Liverpool’s title because of the 11 point gap! Not even a cursory oh and Leicester are close too!

Journalism is a product and its never been a more competitive market. Sky are competing with BT, the tabloids are competing with each other and there's now millions of blogs, websites, vlogs and apps all trying to push football content for advertising revenue and subscriptions. 

 

You sell by appealing to the most people you can and football fans are overly precious, sensitive, delicate flowers. I mean just look at this thread, or our people talking about us thread. Even or thread for pundit predictions or the one about players in teams of the week really serves for people to just moan about lcfc getting overlooked. 

 

Football fans want to hear nice things about their team and there's more United, Liverpool and Arsenal fans than anyone else. So that's what they write and talk about, it's just economics. It's nothing personal but little old Leicester don't make them a lot of money beyond pushing the "miracle" line. 

 

It's shit that it's that way but you should all be used to it by now. The Big Six is a narrative in itself that makes these people billions as an industry every year, its not going to change unless half the country (or half of China) becomes a Leicester glory supporter. 

 

Even Man City suffer from this, the coverage they get compared to United and Liverpool is often a bit dismissive and brief, so even if we ended up being multiple league winners you can bet we'd never get the attention of United and Arsenal even if they've still not won owt. 

Absolutely this. 

 

However I’d find the frustration that they want the big six to remain. If someone was to break the hierarchy, then this current set of pundits would fade away. If say Celtic lost all relevance, there’s no place for Sutton. Same can apply to so many of them. There’s very little representation of clubs outside the big six in punditry or expert analysis. So they cling on promoting the top six rather than correctly praising Leicester, Sheff U or Wolves.

I saw Danny Murphy last week on Sky's "The Debate". He was becoming quite shouty as the programme went on, methinks he might have had a drink or two. I don't mind that but he does spout some awful rubbish.

There is nothing written in stone to say that the top clubs now will be the top clubs in ten, twenty, thirty years time.  Just look at the history of the top league in England over the past century.  There was a time when Bolton Wanderers, Wolves, Sheffield Wednesday, Aston Villa, Nottingham Forest and many others would have qualified as the top teams in the country and where are they now?

 

Some top clubs of recent decades haven't always been top clubs and there is nothing to say that they have any right to continue as top clubs.  Equally some smaller clubs have grown to be 'big clubs'.  Some of these pundits need a history lesson.

As for the top six having big followings yes that's true but with the constant talk and wall to wall showing of their games, even the historical games that sky show it always involves at least one of these teams then their overall support will continue to rise.

 

The only realistic way to break in is too be continually successful and to globally push your clubs name via commercial interests. 

 

As much as I dislike the whole imbalance of the PL I'm not that fussed about world wide followings as I'd much prefer those fans to follow and develop their own local clubs, I think it's quite sad that these world wide fans of the PL don't have a local team that they can follow that appeals to them. 

I’ve always seen Gary Lineker as somebody who only wants the best for his home town club, I remember he was rooting for us during the great escape season, I admit to not following twitter etc but from my perception of him I’d disagree that he just jumped on the Leicester bandwagon after our league win.

I've heard journalists outright ask managers if they're worried for their jobs, but do they ask them if they have a buy-out in their contracts? Thought that was extremely unprofessional from Sky yesterday.

I've seen plenty of praise for us- it is unfortunate that us doing well this season has shown up the failings at other clubs leading to managerial sackings/ pressure and then vacancies become available. I'm sure the Wolves forums are having similar discussion about Santo and his future.

I think our title triumph had two major effects on people not directly associated with our club.

For fans in general, it showed that anything is still possible in football and given the right circumstances and attitude, they too could have a chance...

For the media it demonstrated that, basically, their 'expertise' was worthless and just so much pissing in the wind.

That's why, ever since, there's been a concerted effort to reset to the default 'Big 6' narrative. I don't think it's even about appealing to more people (it doesn't anyway).It's more about resurrecting received wisdom without which they have very little to say, but which our victory rendered obsolete.

That's why you're always hearing ''Yes, well, Leicester apart' and 'if you don't count Leicester's title'  etc before the latest stale batch of orthodox opinion is trotted out.

Acknowledging the fact that we made such opinion redundant is tantamount to admitting their own redundancy. 

But, in a way, it all adds to the unlikely brilliance of our story. We gave hope to everybody, and the more we're treated as outsiders the more our story (which is far from over) will continue to resonate.

Great post, Liverpool and Man Utd are massive institutions with a wealth of success and deserve the media attention, they are our equivalents of Barcelona, Real Madrid, Juventus and Bayern, other clubs over time have moments of greatness but it shouldn’t entitle them to be permanently labelled a “top club”

They didn't have the mass media support that the top 'six' have helping them to maintain their position.

I think the Big 6 also like to leak stories to the media about how they want this player, that manager, etc to try to destabilise any other team from breaking into the top group and denying them a seat at the table they believe they’re entitled to.  
 

The media, existing for the purpose of profit, will jump on any scraps as it makes them money. 
 

This will only get worse as the season progresses, providing we keep doing what we’re doing...

I hate to say this, but I think the media would feel easier if a so called 'sleeping giant' challenged the Top 6.

 

By a sleeping giant I mean teams that have had a number of Domestic and European successes in the past and a potentially larger fan base.. (I'm thinking Villa, Leeds, Everton maybe Wolves .......I can't bring myself to mention anyone else)

 

It's our lack of serious trophies (historically) incl FA cup failures and very few European campaigns that always gives us the minnow tag.

 

For the media, It will take a number of years of consistant success in the Premier League and many more "Champions League" campaigns before we have the right to join the elite.

I never want the chip removed from my shoulder. It's what keeps me going and makes it so much better when we beat one of the media darlings.

My post isn't about validation it is about the sense that we and the non top 6 are entitled to be good and have world class players and managers.  As soon as there is a poor performing top 6 team the pressure is on to sack their manager and for them to immediately go after someone from the division doing well.  For example Spurs taking Pochettino from Southampton and now pushing for Rodgers to go to Arsenal as if that is the natural order of things.
