Unfortunately people come in houses while people are sleeping.

That's what I suspected, terrible...I'm so sorry to hear that. Apologies, I had no intent to make light of it.

No worries mate, if it was the other way round I probably would have said something much more inappropriate lol

Full credit to them. What they have done goes further than many thought they would, me included. The wage deal is for 3 months and will almost certainly need to be extended probably for the best part of 12 months unless there is a miraculous cure or vaccine before then.

I suspect we will all be paying far higher taxes in the years to come but so be it. The choice was either something like this or the total collapse of society which would probably cost more in the long run.

Sadly true. I think we can expect total lockdown for over 70s, perhaps even from Monday, all shop closures quite probably next week too followed by basically a Spain/France situation within the next two weeks.

When the U.K.s death toll starts to sky rocket,it will put the fear of god into the population.Anyone not taking it seriously almost will be then.So you would think most will stay in without even being told to.This whole process looks to be a self imposed lock down. With just enough people keeping the economy going outside.

Two members of the sub human underclass bought 18 Easter eggs at Tesco Beaumont Leys earlier, sneering at the dirty looks they got  that it was 'for the grandkids'

Might have been though.

Made to feel like an absolute criminal earlier when out with the Mrs, no limit on purchases so bought 18 or so Easter eggs for the grandkids and was subject to sneers all around and pretty sure I was called sub human by some onlooking clown.

Some people are seriously thick mate just remember that. I'm sure along with 99% of the population will agree that Easter eggs are pretty fine to be buying in bulk. Be careful though if you were me with 18 Easter eggs in the house now there would be no way they would be left by Easter!

Topshop have sacked all their staff apparently.

Been an absolute bloodbath in retail/hospitality this week.

No they haven’t ..... I expect some workers on short term contracts were let go but the main Arcadia staff are employed till end March and then to be reviewed ..... I expect Sunak’s deal will help retain many of them although I haven’t worked out with PAYE still due to be paid what it’s actually saving me. Arcadia are, like most retailers,  cancelling all orders quoting some ‘force majeure’ clause in their purchase contracts .....

as you said - a bloodbath ....

Would be interested to know what your take on this is.When you have sifted through it 👍

My FD and HR chap we use are going to trawl through it.

initial info seems to say that you have to need to pay full wage to staff to apply for the 80% refund ... those earning up to 37.5k qualify for full 80% refund.  Could see a situation where employees earning well above that figure are likely to be the ones let go (if they've been employed for less than two years )  as they will cost the most to keep.

add to this that I assume the company still has to pay the PAYE and NIC due and you can see that someone earning 60k would cost a business approx 5.5k a month to keep. They can claim back 2.5  of that. Someone earning 30k - you can claim back 2k of the 2.75k you have to lay out .   Someone will correct me if I have that wrong........

to do this, the company has to be shut or the employee(s)  has to be ‘furloughed’ which means they are told not to attend work. This would encourage business’ to close which saves the government having to instruct this with the legal quagmire that results.

Not sure how this affects people working from home - some employers may decide its better to tell their employee not to and to label them as ‘furloughed’. It’s not clear if you could dip in and out of that if you needed some staff to come in to load/unload a shipment. And how can HMRC prove that the staff have been working if the employer makes a claim. The employer is supposed to tell the employee that they have this status but presumably they will have no idea what happens behjnd the scenes as they will receive their pay as per normal and the business applies for the refund.

I guess nothing they tried to do wouldn’t be complicated .....

Looks like my place is shutting from next week for a couple of weeks as our main customer is closed for a few weeks so won’t have much to do anyway. They are also cancelling orders but only the retail order anything for online they are only moving out a few weeks. Don’t mind the fact will have to close for a bit tho. Once it happens think I will avoid the news for a few weeks or will Drive me crazy

It is but it’s sort of within the ‘envelope’

so do we believe the Chinese death numbers??

they did use their GPS phone tracking of their citizens to make sure that people who had come across a confirmed case were aware and could self isolate before their symptoms showed. This has made a difference in s korea too.

I'm usually all for merging threads but it feels like we could split this Coronavirus topic into different ones as it's all we're talking about.

Maybe one for the virus itself/health, another for the social impact and another for the implications on business/finance.

Or I might just be over complicating things.

It just feels bigger than one thread atm.

The government have been top draw for me up to now.

They should have forced pubs and restaurants to close a few days ago rather than advise people not to use them. Other than that I agree. We are in uncharted territory with this now.

one ‘ theory’ is that they needed a chunk of the workforce to catch it and recover as these people will be able to go back to unrestricted working which will be needed. As the death rate rockets, those who have avoided it will become too scared to venture out until cases drop off.  They repeat this ebb and flow of the virus over the next twelve months .....  a very dangerous policy and would only take a misjudgement to make things v ugly indeed ......

Have a genuine need to go into town tomorrow as both my bank card and phone are both knackered and I'll need both for a prolonged shutdown clearly.

Feel guilty going...

Town was eerily quiet this evening around 5pm. Most shops were shut by 4 , other than the Tescos and Sainsbury's. Still plenty of tw**s spitting everywhere

Why would you feel guilty going?

Are you in self-isolation period?
