Is it not the ambition of the club to compete with top teams? What annoys me is every summer transfer window we hear the same old crap “none of our key players are for sale” so Kante, Drinkwater, Mahrez, Maguire and now potentially Chillwell all leave..... Don’t come out and say things like this if it isn’t true, we’re constantly selling our best assets to bigger clubs, and one day it will undo us. As mentioned Chilly isn’t perfect, but he is probably better than what we could replace him with in the time we have, plus it’s another position we then need to worry about replacing. We are forever taking strides forwards, and then leaps backwards, we’re no different to Southampton these days, it was the aim of the club to break the mould after we won the PL, and consistently battle with the top teams, not sell them all of our assets. There’s no need for us to keep selling them, we don’t need to, especially to rival teams. We need to decide what we want as a club and stick with it, if we want to compete with the big clubs then we need to start to act like one and I’m not talking about spending millions, just retaining our best players whilst adding good young players to the mix. Or are we are satisfied with battling for Europa? It annoys me that one week Brendan is saying it would take a world record fee to take Chillwell away from the club, and then the papers are reporting differently. Doesn’t send out a good message. I understand every players have a price, but we frankly look a bit stupid, when we say they’re not for sale and then months later they’re gone. The bank may look healthy but we will have this constant battle to replace players we lose. So you're saying we shouldn't sell anyone but our deadwood? For a club like ours to progress we have to utilise the transfer market and treat it as an asset. Without selling the likes of Drinkwater, Mahrez, etc then we wouldn't have Ricardo, Maddison, Soyuncu here. In the last five years we've only sold Kante (release clause) and Mahrez (struggled like a mofo to get out) against our will. Drinkwater, Maguire and Chilwell if he goes will all be considered good business for non top shelf players. Your post is a contradiction as you don't want us to sell first team players regardless of the offers but I assume you still want us to spend like we have done over the last few years. At some point the books have to balance and we only still break even with a £25m net spend per season. You can't have it both ways and expecting us to "compete with the top teams" when our income is a quarter of there's is unrealistic. For us to compete we have to continually excel in the transfer market and they have to perform poor to average. 5

Is it not the ambition of the club to compete with top teams? If we don't pay the money the big clubs do and don't have the money to spend that the big clubs do, we have to go about things differently to big clubs. It's as simple as that. Even then, the likes of Chelsea, United etc can lose their best players, because it's not always sensible to stick your heels in if a player gets an offer they want to take. 8 minutes ago, Pliskin said: What annoys me is every summer transfer window we hear the same old crap “none of our key players are for sale” so Kante, Drinkwater, Mahrez, Maguire and now potentially Chillwell all leave..... As mentioned Chilly isn’t perfect, but he is probably better than what we could replace him with in the time we have, plus it’s another position we then need to worry about replacing. Rodgers and every other manager has only ever been realistic about what we do in the market. If we come and and say nobody is going, it's generally in the January window. They aren't stupid and know that we can't compete and that if players dig their heels in, you are better off cashing in. 8 minutes ago, Pliskin said: We are forever taking strides forwards, and then leaps backwards, we’re no different to Southampton these days, it was the aim of the club to break the mould after we won the PL, and consistently battle with the top teams, not sell them all of our assets. There’s no need for us to keep selling them, we don’t need to, especially to rival teams. Southampton sold their entire team over the space of about three windows, we've sold a single main asset each summer. It's not even comparable, the fact we missed out on the champions league by the skin of our teeth four years down the line from the title win, with an almost exclusively different team, shows it's not comparable to them. There are plenty of reasons for selling players. Whether you like it or not there are budget constraints and big projects that need paying for. There are considerations about what players want also. If a traditional big club comes in its highly likely they will want to go. You can only turn those offers down so many times before you end up with a pissed off player. If you do that to 3, 4, 5 players it can be at a detriment to the squad as you get unhappy players, you also end up with the problem of having multiple players all kicking off at once and wanting out. Now that would be a nightmare!! At the moment we're timing it very very well, with one asset going each summer, that is far more agreeable than losing two or three at once, or having an unhappy group. 8 minutes ago, Pliskin said: We need to decide what we want as a club and stick with it, if we want to compete with the big clubs then we need to start to act like one and I’m not talking about spending millions, just retaining our best players whilst adding good young players to the mix. The bank may look healthy but we will have this constant battle to replace players we lose. We've decided what we want as a club manageable and realistic growth. It needs to be measured in decades and not summers. Look at the big picture, the training ground and the stadium expansion are there to grow us to another level, but it will take time to happen. Yes there are risks, two bad windows and a bad manager could see it all crumble, but there literally isn't any other way of going about it without huge investment from outside of the club. 20

In the last 2.5 years I don't believe his game has moved on at all and I think once a player hits the 23/24 mark then you can't give them any excuse for potential. Of course there are exceptions like Vardy but I believe Chilwell is still the same player despite having another 2.5 years experience being surrounded by top players and top coaches. It's the main reason I would sell him for top money as although I like many aspects of his game like his stamina, athleticism and his ability to travel with the ball long distances I still believe he's not improved significantly defensively and his crossing and delivery haven't improved. Luke Thomas looked much better with the ball in three games than Chilwell has all season. I think if we do sell Chilwell for big money it's because of his reputation more than his ability. England's young left back, three assists in an England game, etc. I think if £65m was spent on him Lampard might be disappointed in what he bought two months down the line. I do think he’s improved in an attacking sense but still has work to do on his defensive positioning. The most important factor has been the change in style of the club which has suited him and helped develop certain aspects and hide others. I haven’t seen any visiting player (with the exception of Liverpool’s freak full backs) who I thought would be his equal or upgrade so his sale would be a backwards step in my opinion.

Transferring top players at or near their peak is becoming nearly impossible. It took Man.Utd. ages to get Fernandes and they are supposed to be the world's biggest club.
