It’s not like we are looking at Fofana and ignoring all other options though. Even if we signed Fofana I’d be a bit surprised if we didn’t get another more experienced player on loan also, assuming Benkovic leaves/isn’t an option. 
 

I’m sure the club are considering many possible CBs as we speak.

I think sometimes you just just have to make a final bid and walk away. This might be the best long term investment, but at some point we’ve got to focus on the short term and what we need this season. 

 

There are a few CBs out there that could do a job in support of JE and CS on loan. It wouldn’t cost as much and then we could reassess next year. 

 

WF might be a good long term investment, but the best way to make sure we get players is to try and regularly secure a place at the right end of the Premier League 

At £40m he is looking a lot less like a good investment, I'm sure there are better out there.  He might well never  become the player we think he will.  He might not adapt to the PL.  We might lose a lot of money on him.

 

If Asse wring £40m out of us they will have played us like a fiddle and we will have been well and truly Maguired.

I did have reservations about Fofana but after 162 pages it’s impossible not to want him. Hopefully we get to 200 pages when he hands in his transfer request to join Bayern 

 

Darnell looked like he might break though a while back but it seems unlikely now. He’s not in the shop window and we’ve not managed to loan him out.
 

I’m not sure about out upcoming CBs. It was Knight but he was successfully moved to CDM and wasn’t featured against the Arse anyhow.
