Ehh, I can't say I'd blame any footballer in what should be the prime of their career. If the offers were from a team competing/qualified for Europe in La Liga/Serie A/Ligue 1 I think it'd be very tempting

If it was a youngster who'd only just broken into the team or a 30+ year old veteran leadership figure who said that I might feel differently

I mean, he's genuinely a Champions League quality footballer and he'd been relegated to the second tier. 

 

I'm impressed he even considered staying.

first thought should of been getting us back up - which thankfully he helped us do anyway in the end but I know what you mean 👍

If i had to be one of our players I'd definitely choose to be him. He's not only a brilliant and intelligent footballer he just seems a really nice bloke. He even dresses with class compared to most footballers and the threads they splash enormous cash on!

Ricardo Pereira considered leaving Leicester City last summer but stayed to help their fight back to the Premier League and where they “deserve” to be.

The Portuguese international was a key player as City claimed the Championship title, taking on a hybrid role in Enzo Maresca’s set-up and playing more minutes than he managed in the past three seasons combined. But he has admitted he nearly departed.

Offers were on the table for Ricardo, but the desire to play his part in City’s return to the top flight, plus the impact of Maresca, convinced him to stay put. Now he’s looking forward to the battle for survival.

The right-back told Marca in Spain: “There is no single explanation (for City’s relegation). It was many things combined. We started badly in the league, confidence plummeted, and it is not easy to change that dynamic. We managed to come back, but suddenly the World Cup arrived in the middle of the season and we went down again.

“We tried to change things. In your head you think: 'There are many games left, we have a good team.' You think it's impossible for it to happen, but it happened and it was very hard. It was a very big shock, especially after the recent successes we had achieved.

“I received some offers (last summer) and my idea, at first, was to leave, but the pre-season began and my head, little by little, clicked. I saw something different. I liked the team, the new manager.

“Also, there was a part of me that wanted to return Leicester to the place they deserved. It’s taken a weight off my shoulders. It was important to move up to the Premier League.

“I am calmer than a year ago. The return (to the Premier League) is going to be difficult, but I am excited. We have a team that, if we do things well, can have a calm season.”

A £20m signing from Porto in 2018, Ricardo was City’s player of the season in his maiden campaign, flying down the right flank and combining attacking excellence with defensive security. He established himself as one of the best full-backs in the Premier League.

But an ACL injury the following year kept him out for some time and he had consistently picked up new problems since. That was until last season, when he started 37 of City’s 46 Championship matches.

“It was important to play a full season, without injuries,” he said. “I don't know if my current version is better than the 2019 version because I play in different positions and it is difficult to compare but I am closer than ever to my best level.”

 

 

there was talk of some wanting to leave before last season  began but then changing their minds after working with the new manager. Didn’t realize they meant Ricardo!

Got a horrible nagging feeling that Chelsea are going to come in with a bid for Riccy, Reece James Is injured again and given Enzo’s system & structure is so reliant on the inverted full back it would make sense to bring in someone who could bit the ground running.

Doesn't fit their model for player. Too old for them, and they won't be able to shift him for silly money in 2-3 years.

I'm not overly bothered about selling anyone we can get good money for.

pretty consistent 

can run and play football

scores belters occasionally 

why would we need that experience this year? 🫠

 

i would’ve thought he’d be a good captain in a squad of very few leaders (exactly what was wrong when we went down)

His injuries stopped him going to a really top team. But they've allowed us to keep a player that was absolutely miles ahead of the Championship because no one would touch him.

 

I just worry about how he looks now. Hopefully we can't read anything into this pre season at all

Lots of options, he has already utilised both left backs and right backs in midfield pre season

Fans can stick up for Spaghetti Coops in regard to ignoring our academy players like Alves but his use of Ricardo is mind bending.

 

Genuinely one of the few remaining top class players and he's going to use him as the back up right back who plays as a RCB for large parts of games.

I find it frustrating when football managers try to do something different to prove their job isn't as basic as playing players in their best position. 

 

You don't see something that the layman is missing, Cooper, he's a ****ing great fullback so play him there.

Are we certain that he doesn’t have any fitness issues ?  
as a bog standard overlapping full back I’m not sure Ricky’s legs are what they once were and that may also bring injury risks 

 

maybe we should be letting enzo know that we have the perfect player for his system @£35m !

It is a bizarre situation.  You don't need to be particularly knowledgeable about our football club to know where his best position is.  So why does he not put him there?  There's being at Peter Taylor levels of ineptitude which is bad enough but then there's a whole new level of stupid which is where Cooper seems to operating from imo.
