thankyouleicester Posted 23 March 2021 Posted 23 March 2021 Is this the end of an era for Vardy? Should the primary focus in the summer be on replacing him, or bringing in support for Iheanacho? Don't get me wrong, absolutely love Vardy, but it is increasingly looking more like this isn't just a blip in form imo. What are all your thoughts? Who would you love to see replace him?
Koke Posted 23 March 2021 Posted 23 March 2021 He still has plenty to offer but we need a striker in the summer, irrespective of Ihenacho form. A new striker who can and will aim to be a starter, and if that means Vardy becomes a bit part player then so be it. Vardy is the GOAT but he is 34.

We still need a 3rd striker though with hopefully champions league football next year. 6

Xen Posted 23 March 2021 Posted 23 March 2021 He's still returning from his operation - he hasn't really had much time off since then so still isn't quite at full capacity. After the international break see how he does as he may well be much more comfortable after a bit more rest. His role in the side may be changing, but that doesn't make him any less effective. He's still making those runs (the 1-on-1 that he missed after being put through by Iheanacho, the dummy that gave Tielemans the space for his goal), and he's adding some top-quality assists to his game lately. Similar to how Rooney slowly dropped back towards the end of his career, Vardy can do similar and still offer a lot. Do we need another striker in the squad? Absolutely. Will they necessarily be replacing Vardy in the starting line-up? No. 2
filbertway Posted 23 March 2021 Posted 23 March 2021 His pace has definitely gone, he's by no means slow, but he can't get away from defenders like he used to. His finishing is clearly confidence related at this point, luckily he's still putting himself about and is happy to set others up. I think this front 2 is suiting both the strikers, Vardy doesn't have the physical ability to play the lone striker role anymore and him and Kel seem to have a really good partnership going. This was always going to be his last season as a week in week out starter, you can't be starting 35 year olds every game who's game has been based on pace. I half think he might come to an agreement with the club to retire at the end of next season considering his groin seems to be a long term issue. I know he has 2 more years, but the club have already shown they don't mind giving money anyway to people within the club. Either that or we sell him to an american team for a few million and get him off the wage bill.
AjcW Posted 23 March 2021 Posted 23 March 2021 The only markers for a Vardy demise for me is when he can't beat his man.... that's certainly not gone. To me it just looks like he's forgotten where the goal is, which can happen from time to time! He's also an incredibly intelligent striker, who knows his team mate is in top form, so he's decided to pass to him a bit more often than taking it on himself.
AjcW Posted 23 March 2021 Posted 23 March 2021 Obviously the good thing for him is that his misses have only meant we haven't scored a 6th or 4th goal.... rather than costing us a win. So he's able to play himself back into form at the minute.

Jimothy Posted 23 March 2021 Posted 23 March 2021 I think the way he skipped past Maguire before putting it wide shows he's coming back to something like his best. He snatched at the shot, but a few weeks ago he wasn't getting into them positions, wasn't skipping past defenders.

He is still involved and getting chances so i think he still has years of being our talisman yet. I think with Ihaenacho’s contract situation we are more likely to sell him in summer than offer a new contract.
Captain... Posted 23 March 2021 Posted 23 March 2021 Vardy's always had good and bad spells in front of goal. This run looks like he just needs that goal and he'll go on another run. He's getting in behind the defence creating chances for himself and others, just snatching at his shots. He was superb against Sheffield United and caused Man United all kinds of problems. He's not finished yet, but he isn't getting any younger and if Kel needs a striker partner we need to be looking at succession planning. Probably starting next season, a young hungry player that can spend a season bedding in and finding their feet before exploding into the scene 22/23

We need to bring in a 3rd striker and get Nacho to extended he's contract. If we managed Vardy better, we can get another season out of him and he's highest level. He strikes fear in the opposition, Youri has benefited twice in recent weeks against Arsenal and Man U, when the fear of Vardy running in behind just opened up the space for Youri.

Fightforever Posted 23 March 2021 Posted 23 March 2021 As a support striker he has been playing his best build up play I have ever seen from him. His dummy runs and passing have been crucial for us. Just because he isn't scoring doesn't mean he isn't good anymore.

He's got a couple of years in him IMHO, pace is far less essential to his game than people make out and there's no obvious signs that his body is fvcked. We've just rushed him back far too quickly from an injury. He's getting in his own head a bit atm over his finishing, or that's how it looks anyway. But a lot of his so called goal drought is exaggerated because of how much of it he was carrying an injury for to be honest. He finishes a chance or two like the one he missed against United and he'll be back to normal. Its a testament to how strong his character is that we take for granted the fact that even he will have bouts of low confidence or poor form. Happens to everyone.

The way he took Maguire to the cleaners before shanking his shot sums him up right now. He's playing well, just isn't finishing his chances which is very un-Vardy.
