The Super League

Recommended Posts

They have to be smashed down at every point. Every competition and every league should come together and hit these Fuchs where it hurts. Most of their own fans will be onboard with this and it will help restrict it to the 12 idiot clubs most likely.

Relegate them all and see how they go with that. Ban them from all European competitions and see how they like that. 12 teams cannot make a successful league and it will be unlikely that anyone else will follow them.

I hope FIFA, UEFA and the respective leagues don't bottle this... hit these clubs hard, punish them for this treachery to the game and force these owners out of the clubs. Bring in 50+1 and let's never allow any club to die from mismanagement again!

Unpopular opinion;

The current model of football in Europe is broken. It needs to change to stimulate competition and the status quo can’t carry on with sides like Bayern, Barca, PSG dominating domestic leagues. The gap between the elite clubs and the rest is widening all the time.

The Super League is a terrible idea and has been designed by the big clubs to suit their own agendas. European football needs a rethink, but not one that is lead by the big clubs to suit themselves. It needs a review of how to stimulate competition and inject more enthusiasm.

I propose that some of the leagues merge - stick PSG and the french in with Portugal and Spain. Scotland with Ireland and England, Italy with Germany and Holland. Then you will stimulate better competition in these leagues with clubs of comparable sizes.

There will always be different sizes of clubs - Grimsby or Barnet will never be as big as us and we’ll never be as big as Madrid, but a proper league means teams of comparable size competing and gives smaller clubs a chance to compete with them.

I’m sure this model is fraught with problems as well, but the Super League has occurred because the existing system doesn’t work and UEFA etc have been to flow to change so the elite clubs have taken it upon themselves - this can’t be allowed.

This was my first thought, it may be that Perez knows his neck is on the block and he is going down fighting - it just seems unlikely such businessmen don`t cover their asses

Perez is one of the ringleaders and one of the most desperate for it. Real Madrid are a financial mess and have been for a very long time. Honestly one of the worst human beings in sport, he's recklessly overspent and now wants to pretend he's a victim and his club "needs" the super league.

He also knows that a lot of the other clubs signed up because of FOMO more than because they really wanted it, especially the English clubs who already like being in the financially dominant Premier league and probably aren't desperate to rock the boat.

It's a bit of a flex to try and get them to all hold firm under the weight of significant public backlash.

Listening to the Tifo Football podcast on this, they are talking about the lack of reaction from FIFA and how this would indicate the 12 would be safe from punitive measures...

If this league, say, plays 5 games a season in China, 2 in India, 1 in Malaysia, 8 in the USA and Canada, then why would those countries care? They're likely to make money from this.

Fortunately FIFA have little influence over European Club Football.

Be careful, this is exactly what they want. Look at the NFL model. They only play what, 13/14 regular season games and potentially another 3 if you reach the Super Bowl. That’s what these greedy ***** want. And over time so will the players. It will all be money led and the player salaries will be insane. They have the financial backing and it’s very realistic this will happen.

Ask a player today and they would say they don’t like it and still want to play for their country, give it 5/10 years and their national team will be a distant memory.

Hang on, what? I don't follow american football but they surely play more than 13 games a season? The country's fuching massive!

Reminds me of the banking crisis and the "too big to fail" shit .I don't think it will happen because of the legal barriers but a lot of damage has all ready been done. Television money is the root cause of all this. The media have created these monsters and now they want to have the whole cake. Wrist slapping from the football authorities won't help. Proper legislation is needed but the usual corruption will ensure we don't get it.

No escape clause for the 12??? Sheesh, that sounds like a big gamble, or they do have some cast iron security

That's rubbish, if man utd told them that they don't want to join now, what's the esl going to do...ban them, which is kinda what they want.

They split all teams between the NFC (National Football Conference) and the AFC (American Football Conference), there are 32 "franchises" between these 2 conferences.

He also said the big clubs have lost €5b in two seasons like it's anyone else's fault but theirs. There will never be an acceptable amount for this cretin. The ESL would just cause them to spend more to be competitive because that's what their fans would demand.

They could realistically increase their losses while throwing every other well run club to the wolves.

Exactly. And this would just be a quick injection of cash which will steady the ship until the same thing happens again - players salaries will spiral upwards, transfer fees will get out of hand, and before they know it the clubs are in massive debt again as they try to out compete one another.

As others have said, this has been Perez's wet dream for decades, he is just pushing his dream agenda until the end

Started of thinking of a compromise between the two that would shake up european football and came up with this... (it probably has more holes than a tramps sock but....)

A European super league with 20 teams that would replace their domestic league for that year.

So, top 4 from England, 3 from Italy, 3 from Spain, 2 from France and Germany etc and they go off and play each other twice instead of playing domestically.

This means that next year, 4 different teams from England will be in those spots and the following season it will be them who go to this league whilst the teams who previously competed return to their own league.....

Maybe winner and runner up stay in the European league as a prize.....
