Peaty is a phenomenon. He's also got the 9 fastest times in the 50m too. He's just ridiculously good. I often think he gets overlooked in this country, and should get more recognition.

Bonkers, isn't it?

Not only was he the first man to ever go under 58 seconds in the 100m, he then was the first man to ever go under 57 seconds as well, before anyone else had even managed to break 58. An entire second ahead of the competition is ridiculous. In fact only one other swimmer (Kamminga) has managed to match that 57.XX since (6 years after Peaty), in May this year and again yesterday. Before that, Peaty had the top twenty times.

The guy is on another level.

But that is what street Skating is? You can spend all day trying to nail a trick and it comes off when your absolutely knackered, covered in shit and on your last legs. It's a battle with yourself for one tiny moment and it's amazing when it comes off. There are videos that show this as well and they're just as enjoyable as the promo's with all the highlights.

I'm not knocking these street contests but to me there are a little boring. Maybe if you had a security guard trying to stop you before you hit the rail it may give you some authenticity 😂

Partly, but mostly that's what the lived experience of learning to skate on the streets is.  And let's be honest, if you find this format boring then watching guys attempt the same tricks for a couple of hours until they finally get it right is going to be even less attractive, the definition of a sport you can only enjoy through highlight reels!

Don't get me wrong I'm not suggesting it's a perfect format, for one thing I don't think enough weight is given to the run section which for me is the best demonstration of a skater's talents, you always feel for guys like Hoeffler when they pull out 2 high scoring, nearly flawless runs only to get done in by the individual tricks. I'd like something like 3 runs and 4 tricks, take the best 2 scores from each.  But in terms of showcasing the technique and skill of the world's best street skaters as a spectator sport I'm not sure how much they could realistically change, these arena events test all the skills and techniques people use to skate street spots.

At the end of the day if it's not for you, it's not for you.  As previously mentioned the park events might be more to your taste, pool skaters get up to higher speeds and get a lot more air so you'll see fan-favourite tricks like McTwists and kickflip-indies that can't realistically show up in the vertless street sections.

Peaty is unbelievable, really. Saw this earlier;

Just unbelievable domination.

That's unreal tbh. As others have said, he should be getting more recognition for being so far ahead of his peers in his discipline.

Depends what time you woke up lol

I woke up and they had the coverage of Peaty's win & analysis on BBC and Eurosport.

I took the hardcore option last night and watched it live.

I woke up for the 11am action which has been televised over the first two days, despite British interest this morning, it seems Men’s Volleyball gets priority, not surprised though as Eurosport is the ITVBe of Sports Channels, shit!

I gave in and paid for the monthly subscription for Discovery plus. It's the opposite extreme on there though - so much choice it's overwhelming! Currently watching the gymnastics on BBC, but I did watch the hockey earlier on Discovery.

Yeah you make very good points and I agree with what you're getting at. I'm just not sure I agree with skating being judged at all though, I'm not the biggest fan of the X games either. As a skater of 10 years+ in my youth and now longboard regularly I'm probably looking at it differently to most viewers.

The skate community is split on this topic but most are probably in favour of

competition, you'll probably find it's the oldie's like me that take this view more than the youth? Everything nowadays is judged and although skate comps have been around as long as skating the personal battle is what skating is all about.

You're right about the park, that will be more entertaining to viewers. I'll try and catch some of that if I can.

Eurosport's main feed will be the same across Europe

Re judging: I don't think there's really any way to do skating competition at a high standard without judges.  Even something like SKATE frequently relies on human interpretation to decide if a competitor matched the trick or not.  Besides, everybody's favourite skater made his name at judged freestyle events.

If it's good enough for Rodney it's good enough for me :D

Incidentally I think they've missed a trick not including freestyle.  If any skating format lent itself to an Olympic audience it's surely that one, I suppose it resonates less with the modern skateboard scene though.

I have a Discovery+ subscription and initially thought "wow, so much to watch" but actually the BBC is probably doing the best job of showing what they think most people are most likely to want to watch. So like you, I've kind of backed off Discovery in favor of the BBC's coverage. If there is something specific I want to watch then Discovery is great, but it does feel like once you're watching one of their feeds, you are a bit disconnected from everything else going on!

This is it exactly. If it's on one of their channels its fine, but when it comes to the individual events they just focus on the one event with no context of what is happening elsewhere. E.g. I was watching the gymnastics the other day and the only option available was to watch the individual pieces of apparatus rather than the highlights of what was happening.

What a great day, stayed up for the Men’s Triathlon & then watched today’s sport thru the day as in & out.

Brilliant by Peaty & then great for Daley, it’s been a long journey & the sadness over the illness & passing of his father, sure it will mean a lot.

Then easy win in the MTB for Pidcock, awesome!!

And who would have thought we would all know about Taekwondo now, great effort by that team, though + Muhammed last time out 3 Brits have had decent leads & sadly been overtaken in the last few seconds of all the fights, but it was “MAGIC MONDAY”!!!

Gold and silver on the mens 200m freestyle and another silver in the women's triathlon. Another good day.

We keep getting done in the Taekwondo with about a second to go

Being the Taekwondo expert that I am, with it having become my favourite sport in the last 3 days, I can't understand why the Brit didn't walk out the ring with 3 seconds to go, collect her 9th penalty point, run the clock down and win.

Speed of thought or just not the done thing in a sport so predicated on discipline and respect to your opponent?

Judging by her coaches reaction, I imagine he was thinking the same. She had had to attack so much to get back in front, I guess it was hard to switch to suddenly playing defensively.

Exactly what I was thinking, why on earth did she even engage?

I guess a fighters mindset is just to fight, although her coach looked fuming with her at the end

He has been praised everywhere, but Lutalo Muhammad really has done a great job with the Taekwondo punditry on the BBC. Made it very accessible to those who know nothing about it and the intricacies of the sport and seems very personable. Looks like a natural for TV.
