Well it was a massive part of the reason we lost thanks to the penalty he didn’t give us

We were dogshit for about 75 of the 90 minutes with two shots on target and we’re ruing a dodgy decision about penalty we might have scored?

I love your optimism, but I think the issues run deeper than crap officials.

Be good enough to win the game without the officials.

Issue was not the ref. Yes he was bad. Yes a number of decisions didn't go our way but that's just an excuse.

The issue was how we didn't create chances. We didn't show any type of drive or urgency to win the game. 2 shots in 90mins which were feeble attempts from outside box. There was no gameplan on how to break the Roma side down in the event we went 1-0 down which was caused by ourselves with a small player defending Abraham which we carried on with after the goal went In. That's beyond naive.

Rodgers is one of the highest paid managers in the league yet the performances and football we serve up over last 12 months are not on the front foot nor take the game to the opponent but safe risk adverse and boring. Bit like the man himself.

Honestly on reflection, he just wasn't up to it. Probably overcome by the atmosphere. However a question needs to be asked as to why VAR didn't request that he reviewed the clear foul by Smalling on Fofana. That decision is almost disturbing and corrupt.

Last night showed how utterly futile VAR is.

Literally no point having it if, in the modern game, a ref can be that bent and it not be moderated by the VAR official/s.

There were decisions made that 100 metres away up in the stands you could clearly see were incorrect. With the technology capability that exists, there should be no way those calls can happen these days to the extent that it majorly influences an important game.

So either we use it to get a genuinely level playing field, or we just forget about it all and sack it off.

Annoyed me that Jose was in the fourth officials hear all game despite them getting all the decisions. I don't know if it makes a difference but it's intimidating actions.

And on the pitch patting his player on the back at one point, he's a law unto himself.

Towards the end Abrahams had a couple of minutes treatment but opted to stay on then just as the game restarted dropped to his knees again and they wanted the game stopped immediately and were going potty. Precautions for head injuries and heart problems are in place for genuine emergencies and this mob are trying to take advantage of this sensible safety first culture. You had every opportunity to sub your player but instead saw it as a way to kill another couple of minutes of time by turning it into two stoppages. He tried to carry on but couldn't? Diddums, next time the balls out of play you can sub him, why should it become a stoppage?

It wasn’t just the blatant errors though. He let Roma get away with all sorts of fouls but had no intention of stopping them by issuing a yellow until practically forced into it.

this allowed them to constantly disrupt any momentum we might have been able to make. The ref also aided this on at least two occasions where we were in transition with a chance of a break and he pulled it back for a minor foul on one of our players in our own half.

as for that drop ball after it had clearly gone out for our throw wtf?

yes we were not at our best, but it’s difficult playing against 12 men

Italian sides have been upto this nonsense for years and getting away with it.

Hearing he's even forcing Riccy P to mark Abraham at every set piece....

That is probably true. It was the sure way to rig the match I suppose …

Someone said a while back that uefa would want a big name winning the conference and you cannot tell me the ref wasn't "influenced"

Mind you, maybe they bribed us to play like shit and lose:brendan:

A conspiracy theory……..Serbia have not forgiven the UK over Kosovo and the Balkan’s War.  If you were one of those fans in Vienna that night we played Red Star, the hate for the English was ‘clear and obvious’ and did not need VAR.

I'm not sure that picking referees who officiate in any minor national league is at all wise.

This is intended to show that UEFA (and FIFA) are being democratic and impartial, but what happens when a referee who is only familiar with relatively small crowds and has limited experience in the complexity and demands of this level of football is put in charge of such an important game? He gets pressured by the atmosphere and then loses his impartiality and the ability to take the time to judge incidents - especially affecting the away team.

Italians are well-trained in all the ploys which can result in an unfair advantage. I suspect, and someone correct me if I'm howling up the wrong tree, the manner of Serbian play (and other 'Balkan' states and Romania) is similar.

A ref. is schooled in the environment he/she encounters normally - a one-off in Europe is hardly going to acclimatise them for a sophisticated Italian or Spanish style of play or our fast-paced, and combative English style.

Inclusivity is admirable until it comes to critical situations. Smalling's unpenalized judo moves on Fofana was the difference between City getting a toehold in the game and the actual outcome.

Not corrupt, not a cheat - but rendered inept by the situation.

Genuinely cannot remember the last time I saw a referee that was seemingly this biased? or crap? or dodgy?

Take your pick for the reason why but there is no way anyone can say he has officiated this game fairly or correctly.

This Ref makes Paul Tierney look like the best Ref in the world !!

and he’s a real

Tbf, I’m amazed it took us this long to come across a real horse manure ref in Europe. There’s no doubt he was utterly atrocious, but we allowed ourselves to be in a situation where we didn’t take a lead to Rome, and that was always going to be an up hill battle from that point. Wasteful finishing in the first leg has ultimately cost us getting to final rather than the dross ref in the second leg in my view.

If the ref was corrupt, biased or just downright woeful, then we made it too easy for him.  I still can't believe how bad the Ref was, but I'm not really thinking too much about that, I'm just thinking how poor we were on the night and for most of the season.

They’re often shite I don’t know what you mean. The Turkish one when we were in the champions league springs to mind, the Spaniard in the first leg of this tie and then the Serbian fella the other night. There was also another woeful referee in this conference league run somewhere along the line but can’t exactly remember who or when.

The best one we’ve had in recent years was the French woman we had, Stephanie Frappart(?) - was the best referee we’ve had in any competition.

Tbf it doesn’t really apply here because the referee on VAR was German
