It use to the highest level of football and the only why we would see the stars of world football. Now it's been surpassed by European club football and a large chuck of the stars play in the PL. SouthStandUpperTier Posted 12 November 2022 Posted 12 November 2022 Let's be honest, Cameroon's play and Frank Rijkaard leaving a massive grolly in Rudi Voller's permed mullet were the only good things about Italia '90. 2

FoxesWalk Posted 12 November 2022 Posted 12 November 2022 (edited) International football is like a mirror of the premier league in some ways. I strongly dislike the Premier League and the direction the club game is going, but Leicester play in, and I love the team. International football is the only pure sporting spectacle left in modern top level football. Yes money plays a role (especially in who is host) but it’s far less important to the outcome than in European club leagues. I should love it, but the England team bores the tits off me. Great thing about the World Cup is there is often a likeable relative underdog side that does well, and flare players even in the minnow sides. Edit: the main thing the premier league and international football have in common is they are both run by gatherings of corrupt, insufferable willy pullers Edited 12 November 2022 by FoxesWalk 1
FoxyJim1987 Posted 12 November 2022 Posted 12 November 2022 Maybe it's because there was even a debate about whether the best attacking midfielder in the country would even be in the squad, and because a man playing every game for league winners AC Milan and performing well, doesn't make the squad but Harry Maguire does.

Long story, but my dad looks exactly like Rudi Voeller. I mean a spitting image. Excuse the pun. It started when my dad took me to Leicester races and some guy told him (during the 1990 World cup) He had the tight perm and everything. But he coincidentally had the same haircut as him, always, it peaked in about 2007 when he was in Tenerife and a bunch of German tourists asked him for his autograph and started chanting "RUDI, RUDI" My mum said she wanted to die Edited 12 November 2022 by tom27111 6
Kegworthfox Posted 12 November 2022 Posted 12 November 2022 Was a top capper travelled all over watching them when Southgate took over stopped can’t stand the man or his football bloke is a yes man 1
tom27111 Posted 12 November 2022 Posted 12 November 2022 I'm actually buzzing for the World Cup. Yes, we know it shouldn't be where it is, but what can we do about it? It was awarded to Qatar in 2010, maybe a fuss should've been kicked up then? And I'm not massively bothered about England. During group stages, FOUR GAMES A DAY! Yes please! I just love football. 3
Bert Posted 12 November 2022 Posted 12 November 2022 If people don’t like England that’s fine. What I find beyond weird, is being English, having no affiliation to any other country and actively wanting England to lose is just baffling, for me. 4
Dan Posted 12 November 2022 Posted 12 November 2022 Love tournaments but honestly just can't get all that into England and I've never been able to put my finger on why. I'm not one of these anti patriots either.

LCFC>England This is the major reason for me…This hit the proverbial nail on the head… watched football since late 50s..All football had its romance & mystic. Then slowly over the 60s & 70s we enjoyed iregular TV club and International football…The romance & mystic still holding… Then 80s until now we have been overrun with football…& as you say the individual mystic of international players one sees not just in European competitions, but also in the PL… I will follow England, but not expect the big disappointment if/when they lose, like I would have 15 years ago. A CL group or from quarter final games, are often ( even as a neutral) more exciting. I don’t dislike Southgate…I reckon he’s doing well, and usually is right with the squad selections. His teams has done better than the last managers. I think many international managers suffer….The players don’t seem as committed When playing for their country…and up pops that famous word, very few games have that intensity. Even competitive games seem like friendlies in their intensity. Maybe 1-5 games, the 2 teams show an high competitive interest. 1

Who were the best? Brazil 70 and 82 are popular choices, but you'd have seen the Flying Magyars! Anyone else you'd add to that list?

Yes but all within IMHO… After the 60# Argentina.produced not only Maradona, but greats. To be honest all teams produced individuals or 2-3 period greats. Italy,Germany. In the last 4 always shaking out top names & moments Hungary & Rumania in the qualifying stages produced some memorial performers I did believe that African nations would upset the apple cart, and have more nations competing for future W.cups. Life, poverty and corruption holding that wave back. 58;62, and 70 I can’t get away from Brazil I reckon that Brazil squad of 1970, could & would stand up against all other winners. + any Brazil vs Italy, often greatest of games. Germanys magnificent win in Brazil.. The unluckiest runners up Netherlands, god what players. The Magyars, was a tat before my time to appreciate. The films over their achievements rumbled well into the 70s. In fact BBC did a programme over them 1964 about ,then again 2010s sometime where they were considered the best international team ever. At one time I could reel their team off by art, same as the great Brazil & BVB sides.. By memory without looking up google, I can think of Puskas, Lorant, Budai,I think also a Buzanszky not sure.. Sitting with my dad in the cinema, they were often shown before major feature.
Guest David Oldfields Gate Posted 13 November 2022 Posted 13 November 2022 Used to love watching England, then Southgate came along with his sh!te football and hypocritical wokery and killed it for me. This WC is dead to me. Thousands died building the damn venues and no one bats an eyelid.

Beachyboy Posted 13 November 2022 Posted 13 November 2022 I actually think the premiership this season has been largely dull, an most of the teams in the league will welcome the break apart from maybe Arsenal and Newcastle. The fact that this world cup is in mid season, may actually kick start the season when it resumes, teams will have 3-7 games in 5 weeks less than they'd of had in that time frame at club level. An lower league teams may say an upturn in attendances with no premiership on the TV some may rather watch a league game than Poland v Saudi Arabia for example.
SkidsFox Posted 13 November 2022 Posted 13 November 2022 If we think we have it bad as England football fans, imagine being a fan of the egg chasers? How many years and how many tournaments did the England rugby team play dull possessive rugby? They may have changed (I haven't watched them in years) but why take the chance?
